God-King Skovald had once heard of King Ymiron. After all, King Ymiron had slumbered for more than twenty thousand years and had been the Vrykul king of Howling Fjord thousands of years ago. The Vrykul later summoned by Odyn to Stormheim had brought with them legends of King Ymiron.

Even after slumbering for more than twenty thousand years, the Vrykul of Howling Fjord had not produced a new king. All Vrykul of the Dragonflayer Clan still obeyed King Ymiron alone, which was enough to show his strength and prestige.

Originally, King Ymiron had the right to enter Odyn's Halls of Valor after his death. However, due to the Curse of Flesh, the Vrykul lost their eternal lifespans and began to degenerate, something the Vrykul found utterly terrifying.

Thus, King Ymiron decided to lead the Vrykul to Gjalerbron and enter slumber. That lasted until the Scourge found the Vrykul of Howling Fjord and deceived them, promising that if they pledged loyalty to the Lich King, their strongest warriors could be reborn as undead Vrykul—the Ymirjar—and gain eternal life.

King Ymiron's strength had been enough to earn Odyn's favor, but he had made the wrong choice and lost his chance to enter the Halls of Valor. Helya of the Maw of Souls, meanwhile, had set her sights on King Ymiron. One of the terms of her deal with Rend was that Rend would kill King Ymiron, and Helya would bring him to the Maw of Souls to become her puppet.

Gjalerbron was far too important to the Scourge, so large numbers of Dragonflayer Clan dragon riders patrolled the skies. Yet they had not expected the Blackrock Expeditionary Force to include Vrykul. From the air, the Dragonflayer Clan Vrykul could not tell the difference between their own people and the Tideskorn.
