After taking the Vrykul town of Halgrind, the Blackrock Expeditionary Force held the entire southwestern region of Howling Fjord, with the sole exception of Westguard Keep, built by the Bronzebeard Dwarves.

Though Westguard Keep did not have many Bronzebeard Dwarves, their elite quality rivaled that of the Trifarix Legion. Moreover, a fortress built by Dwarves was unquestionably among the most impregnable.

Just like Wildhammer Stronghold in Shadowmoon Valley, which had endured under the noses of Burning Legion demons and later the Illidari, thanks to the exceptional sturdiness of Dwarven-built fortresses.

Furthermore, Westguard Keep had been built with cliffs on three sides, leaving only one side open to attack. The Dwarves only needed to defend that single wall. Howling Fjord also had native gryphons, and both Westguard Keep and Vargas had trained gryphon units, giving them aerial defense capabilities.

Thus, Westguard Keep was an extremely tough bone to crack. To the Blackrock Expeditionary Force, it was like tasteless food—useless to eat, but a shame to throw away.

In any case, the Dwarves of Westguard Keep were too few in number to cause any real trouble. Leaving behind a force to keep watch would be enough. Perhaps the Dwarves of Westguard Keep might prove useful someday.

The fall of Halgrind allowed the Blackrock Expeditionary Force to shift from defense to offense, exposing Utgarde Keep's western side to their attacks.

After enduring months of Vrykul assaults against Blackrock Stronghold, the Blackrock Expeditionary Force finally let the Vrykul of Utgarde Keep experience the misery of being constantly attacked.

Every day, Malkorok led the Blackrock Expeditionary Force in attacks on Utgarde Keep's western gate.

After the Lordaeron forces at Valgarde received news of Halgrind's fall, they also actively launched a counteroffensive.
