Background

Rend was born as Blackhand’s son and was forcibly matured by Gul’dan’s warlock magic. The process gave him an exceptionally powerful adult Orc body but left him with depleted life essence, limited potential, and an incomplete soul. Following the death of his elder brother Maim, an otherworldly soul transmigrated into Rend’s body and merged with his own, gaining his memories and full control of the body 1 102.

The new Rend immediately recognized the Blackrock Clan’s precarious position: rejected by the Horde, hated by the Alliance, and used by Nefarian as expendable pawns. He resolved to break Nefarian’s control and secure the clan’s future within the Horde instead 1.

Appearance

Rend is a black-skinned Orc with a single eye, a powerful warlock-grown physique, and a battlefield presence often marked by heavy black armor and an oversized two-handed sword 70 188.

  • His missing eye creates blind spots in combat, though his remaining eye possesses unusually sharp focus and vision 188 473.
  • He was physically matured into an adult by warlock magic and inherited exceptional raw strength from Blackhand’s bloodline 1 388.
  • He is commonly recognized by his multicolored dragon mount, Gyth 70.
  • His later primal aura is powerful enough to frighten veteran enemies into retreat 739.

Personality

Before the soul fusion, Rend was regarded as a reckless and arrogant commander who charged into battle without strategy. His changed behavior quickly surprises allies such as Grommash: he becomes patient, calculating, and willing to use terrain, deception, intelligence, and logistics rather than relying solely on force 3 12.

Rend remains conscious of his own shortcomings. Early on, he recognizes that his resolve and experience in war are inferior to those of veteran Orcs, and fears assassination or encounters with true powerhouses 16 32. Those insecurities persist in his nightmares of being betrayed by both Horde and Alliance leaders 188.

He is fiercely protective of soldiers under his command, personally overseeing the quality of their armor and weapons and taking heavy casualties among Blackrock and Dragonmaw warriors personally 229. However, he can also be ruthless, manipulative, and pragmatic toward enemies or unreliable allies, as shown by his treatment of Darksoul, Lorekeeper Lydros, and Warden Delkis 232 279 379.

Abilities & Skills

Enhanced Orc Physiology

Rend combines Blackhand’s inherited physique with the benefits of soul fusion, restored life essence, and divine blessings.

  • Possesses exceptional physical strength; after Agamaggan’s blessing, he can crush a stone into powder by hand 43.
  • His restored life essence improves endurance, strength, sensory perception, and long-term growth potential 102.
  • Can tear apart relatively thin arcane-steel barriers through raw force and rage 208.
  • His strength eventually surpasses that of a Gronn in direct contests, earning him the description of a “compressed humanoid Gronn” 761.
  • His one-eyed vision leaves exploitable blind spots despite its sharpness 473.

Warrior Techniques

Rend is a frontline warrior who favors powerful sword strikes, mobility, and adapting his tactics to an opponent’s weaknesses.

  • Uses Whirlwind to cut through groups and Shockwave to clear opponents from his path 87.
  • Employs agility and positioning against larger enemies rather than meeting superior force head-on 16 284.
  • Activates the Orc racial ability Blood Fury when fighting at full intensity, greatly increasing his strength and speed 431.
  • Learned from Eitrigg, the surviving Burning Blade blademasters, Chen Stormstout, and repeated battles against powerful opponents 14 591 761.
  • Can use the monk technique Ground Roll and wield qi in close combat 387 473.

Archery

Rend is a capable archer in addition to being a melee combatant.

  • Uses a composite bow and can execute the rapid “Three Stars in a Row” technique after his physical enhancements 188.
  • Employs oversized arrows from his High Warlord’s recurve bow when retaliating against enemies who harm his soldiers 496.
  • His archery remains a secondary discipline; he measures himself against Azeroth’s master archers rather than claiming their level 188.

Agamaggan’s Divine Power

Agamaggan’s blessing provides Rend with warrior-oriented divine enhancements.

  • Grants strength, endurance, defense, and a permanent increase in physical durability 43 111.
  • Can manifest thorn-like defenses and hide thick enough to resist Zul’jin’s attacks 549.
  • Agamaggan offers a permanent godlike transformation, but Rend refuses the bodily mutation it would require 549.

Titan and Elemental Power

Rend has acquired several sources of primordial and elemental power without becoming a conventional shaman.

  • The Heart of Magnaron grants Titan’s Strength and Colossus Smash 526.
  • His arm can release violent elemental power as an elemental storm 572.
  • He can enchant Seradel with a fire elemental’s power, causing lava to surge from the blade with every swing 563.
  • He rejects reliance on shamanic faith and refuses to “beg” the elements for aid 341.

Command and Strategy

Rend is an experienced military organizer who blends personal combat with large-scale planning.

  • Reorganizes the Blackrock Clan’s army, conducts censuses, and prepares its forces for future wars 8.
  • Uses combined-arms tactics, including centaur raiders, kodo heavy cavalry, aerial assets, and fortifications 37 201.
  • Builds alliances across racial lines, including with Blood Elves, Pandaren, Ogres, Trolls, Arakkoa, Ethereals, and Blue Dragons 239 388 488 567.
  • Creates the Horde-dominated Earthen Ring to counter the Cenarion Circle’s influence among neutral factions 567.
