Background and History
Gul'dan assigns Gorefiend to retrieve a rune barrier stone from the elves. Gorefiend leads seven death knights toward White Tower Town under cover of night, but Sara Dawnblade attacks them before they can seize it 211 213.
After losing two subordinates, Gorefiend judges that the mission has failed: his remaining force cannot safely take the stone and escape a defended city. Gul'dan orders him to kill the lone attacker and continue. Gorefiend reorganizes his knights for the pursuit, then recognizes that Sara is an undead being similar to themselves and suspects a trap 213.
Sara defeats Gorefiend's subordinates in a sword fight. Gorefiend survives Sara's Pyroblast scroll, but Sara's spirit summons a Divine Spirit Serpent that pulls the Orc souls from the death knights' human bodies, including Gorefiend's, and carries them to the Netherworld 213. There, Shane pins all seven souls to the Wall of Blasphemers. Underworld winds cut into Gorefiend's soul; the punishment ends only when the wall has weakened and absorbed him 214.
Appearance
Gorefiend inhabits a human corpse. In the confrontation with Sara, he is described with an utterly black face, a cloak, and scarlet light issuing from his face 210 213.
