Bai Zhi was taken in by her master ten thousand years before meeting Mo Chen. Her Spirit Infant began growing continuously after her adoption, leaving her unable to advance normally despite her unnatural longevity and formidable combat power 175.

She is a surviving member of the Wutong Sacred Sect, which once had one hundred thousand members before the Great Wilderness Imperial Clan massacred it. Bai Zhi claims she was overlooked because she seemed too weak to ever seek revenge; afterward, she remained alone to rebuild the sect under pressure from the Great Wilderness and the surrounding sects 175 176.

Patriarch Mystic Stele appeared in Bai Zhi's only recorded dream and instructed her to give the Phoenix Perches on the Parasol Tree Scripture to Mo Chen when he arrived. Convinced that Mo Chen was the disciple specified by the patriarch, she relentlessly pursued him and brought him back to the Wutong Sacred Sect 175 181.

Although Bai Zhi initially calls herself Mo Chen's master, their dynamic increasingly becomes that of senior sister and junior brother. She gives him sect techniques, helps him acquire spirit stones, protects his identity as a survivor of the Bitter Cold Land, and supports his efforts to restore the Wutong Sacred Sect 176 177 178.

Bai Zhi later recovers fragments of her lost memories, including knowledge that she had been engaged to an unknown man ten thousand years earlier. In the later Earth events, Bai Zhi reveals that she had approached Mo Chen through the virtual world Chaos, where she appeared as his senior sister.
