Background / History
Bai Zhi was taken in by her master ten thousand years before meeting Mo Chen. Her Spirit Infant began growing continuously after her adoption, leaving her unable to advance normally despite her unnatural longevity and formidable combat power 175.
She is a surviving member of the Wutong Sacred Sect, which once had one hundred thousand members before the Great Wilderness Imperial Clan massacred it. Bai Zhi claims she was overlooked because she seemed too weak to ever seek revenge; afterward, she remained alone to rebuild the sect under pressure from the Great Wilderness and the surrounding sects 175 176.
Patriarch Mystic Stele appeared in Bai Zhi's only recorded dream and instructed her to give the Phoenix Perches on the Parasol Tree Scripture to Mo Chen when he arrived. Convinced that Mo Chen was the disciple specified by the patriarch, she relentlessly pursued him and brought him back to the Wutong Sacred Sect 175 181.
Although Bai Zhi initially calls herself Mo Chen's master, their dynamic increasingly becomes that of senior sister and junior brother. She gives him sect techniques, helps him acquire spirit stones, protects his identity as a survivor of the Bitter Cold Land, and supports his efforts to restore the Wutong Sacred Sect 176 177 178.
Bai Zhi later recovers fragments of her lost memories, including knowledge that she had been engaged to an unknown man ten thousand years earlier. She and Mo Chen plan to investigate the former Wutong Sacred Sect site for answers, though Bai Zhi insists that Mo Chen must first become strong enough to survive the Great Wilderness 204.
Mo Chen eventually reveals that Bai Zhi and Huang Tianyue are soul fragments of Empress Huang Tianyue. The two merge willingly, restoring the Empress's divine soul and changing Bai Zhi's temperament into that of a mature, composed, and elegant woman 351 352.
In the later Earth events, Bai Zhi reveals that she had approached Mo Chen through the virtual world Chaos, where she appeared as his senior sister. She enters a cooperative marriage with him to pursue the secrets of immortality, but gradually develops genuine feelings for him; they later establish the technology company Wutong Sacred Sect together 717 718 721 722.
Appearance
Before recovering her memories, Bai Zhi is portrayed as a youthful, exceptionally beautiful woman with fair skin, red lips, white teeth, and jet-black hair. After fusing with Huang Tianyue, she retains her beauty but develops a poised, intellectual, and mature bearing 174 351.
- Possesses the Divine Fire Spirit Body 182 183.
- Her Spirit Infant resembles her, but is immense enough to seem to support heaven and earth within her dantian 175.
- Uses a black night-travel outfit and a fourth-tier spirit cat mask when concealing her identity 179.
- Her post-fusion form is often dressed in white and carries the dignified presence of an empress 351.
- In her Earth identity, she is a polished corporate president with long black hair and a refined professional appearance 717 720.
Personality
Bai Zhi is direct, persistent, and unusually uninhibited in social matters. She refuses to release Mo Chen after choosing him as her disciple, sees little issue with physical familiarity between master and disciple, and often fails to understand the suggestive implications of her own words 175 178.
Despite her naïveté, she is resilient and practical. She has spent millennia rebuilding the Wutong Sacred Sect alone, repairs its unfinished buildings herself, cooks for Mo Chen, and obtains resources through her self-described “borrowing” operations 176 179 182.
She is fiercely protective of people she considers her own. Bai Zhi keeps Mo Chen's Bitter Cold Land origin secret, repeatedly offers to defend him from stronger enemies, and reacts violently toward those connected to the persecution of her sect 177 175 206.
After her fusion with Huang Tianyue, her personality becomes more composed, elegant, and calculating without losing her affection for Mo Chen. In her Earth identity, she initially approaches him with a pragmatic fixation on eternal life, but later struggles with the emotional distance in their marriage 351 718 722.
Abilities & Skills
Abnormal Spirit Infant
Bai Zhi's cultivation is defined by an enormous Spirit Infant that has continued growing for ten thousand years.
- She claims to be stuck at the Spirit Infant Realm and unable to break through normally 175.
- Her Spirit Infant has not fused with her divine soul, preventing ordinary advancement toward Soul Fusion 175.
- The Spirit Infant is vastly larger than Mo Chen's and contains immense spiritual power 175.
- Its size and origin remain unexplained even to Bai Zhi 175.
Overwhelming Physical Strength
Bai Zhi's visible cultivation does not reflect her combat ability.
- A casual punch sends Mo Chen flying despite his resistance with power sufficient to kill a peak Soul Fusion Realm cultivator 174 175.
- She defeats Sui Wenshan after he reaches the Earth Immortal Realm, shattering his lightning attacks and launching him through several mountains 206.
- Her combat style is simple and direct, relying primarily on close-range punches rather than elaborate techniques 206.
- She herself does not understand the full extent of her strength until fighting Sui Wenshan 208.
Divine Fire Spirit Body
Bai Zhi possesses a special constitution suited to the Wutong Sacred Sect's inheritance.
- Her Divine Fire Spirit Body caused a sensation when she first entered the sect 183.
- It allows repeated rebirth through fire while cultivating the Phoenix Perches on the Parasol Tree Scripture 183.
- The scripture's nature also contributes to her inability to progress normally beyond her current cultivation state 181.
Phoenix and Empress Soul
Bai Zhi is revealed to be a fragment of Empress Huang Tianyue and the Phoenix's scattered soul.
- She shares Huang Tianyue's identical appearance and feels an instinctive closeness toward her 351.
- Her fusion with Huang Tianyue restores the Phoenix's divine soul 351.
- The restored Empress possesses a Yin-Yang Void Mirror fragment containing comprehension of the Dao of Life 351.
- She can separate back into Bai Zhi and Huang Tianyue if necessary 351.
