"Ever since Nine-Tails Night, the relationship between the Uchiha and the village has grown increasingly tense.
Shisui, I hope you understand my good intentions. Everything I'm doing is for the village."
"Lord Hokage, I'll investigate further and remind Yan as well, but I believe he won't do anything out of line."
It was time to state his position and choose a side again. As always, Shisui chose to stand with the higher-ups.
After leaving the Hokage Office Building, Shisui felt somewhat heavy-hearted.
The Third Hokage had asked him for quite a bit of intelligence regarding the Uchiha's internal affairs and hoped he could gather even more.
That was precisely what troubled Shisui.
The fundamental reason he had become a double agent was that he wanted to resolve the strained relationship between the village and his clan, not because he truly wanted to sell out his clan.
With a heavy heart, Shisui returned to the Police Department.
Faced with the tense relationship between the village and the clan, the role he could play was negligible.
The higher-ups were wary of him, and most of the clan elders were not on his side either.
Even Uchiha Fugaku, the clan head, was wavering back and forth.
"Forget it. I'll talk to Yan first."
Unfortunately, Shisui's arrival was not welcomed.
When the door opened, Uchiha Zhiyan, whose build resembled an iron tower, immediately darkened. His massive body blocked the way as he asked in a thoroughly disgusted tone,
"What are you here for?"
Faced with such hostile treatment from a fellow clansman, Shisui sighed inwardly.
Ever since he had begun speaking up for the village and proposing various suggestions beneficial to it, more and more people within the clan had grown dissatisfied with him. Some had even openly mocked him as a traitor to the clan.
Suppressing the frustration in his heart, Shisui said seriously, "I need to speak with Yan. Are you planning to keep blocking me here?"
"You're not welcome here."
Zhiyan still wore a dark expression and showed no intention of moving aside.
Just as the two reached a standoff, neither willing to yield, Yan opened the office door and stepped out.
"You two planning to fight?"
Leaning against the doorframe, Yan looked amusedly at the two men, neither of whom was willing to back down.
As a squad captain in the Police Department, Shisui naturally could not yield easily.
As for Zhiyan, due to certain personal reasons, he had always treated Shisui badly. Whenever the two met, neither would accept the other.
You got lucky.
After glaring at Shisui, Zhiyan reluctantly stepped aside.
Yan walked forward and asked, "What do you need me for?"
"Let's find somewhere to talk?" Shisui tilted his head.
"Fine."
After considering it for a few seconds, Yan did not refuse.
He also wanted to know why Shisui was looking for him. Could it be because of the Anbu and the Third Hokage?
No way. He had not even gone near Naruto. Was there really any need to be this nervous?
The two left the Police Department together. After remaining silent all the way, Shisui suddenly said, "Zhiyan has changed a lot."
"Not bad. After my guidance, that guy's brain finally works a little better."
Yan picked up the topic in a bland tone. The two headed to a secluded forest at the edge of the clan grounds and stopped at a hidden training field.
There were quite a few broken targets inside the training field. It seemed to be Shisui's secret training ground.
Shisui bent down to straighten the damaged stumps and pockmarked targets around the field while Yan stood quietly to the side and watched.
After tidying everything up, Shisui revealed a sincere smile. Wiping the sweat from his forehead, he placed his hands on his hips, his eyes full of nostalgia.
"This is where Itachi and I often came."
Yan nodded slightly.
"I heard the young clan heir has already passed the solo Chunin Exam and even set a new record."
"..."
Shisui's mouth twitched. He knew Itachi did not like being addressed that way.
"Yes, he has already graduated. He has currently left his ninja squad. As for where he goes next, we'll have to wait for the clan head's arrangements."
Without dwelling on Itachi, Shisui got straight to the point.
"Yan, what you're doing is very dangerous. The village will not allow any Uchiha to approach Naruto."
"And the Anbu are following you."
Just as expected.
A hint of amusement flashed through Yan's eyes. Pretending to ponder, he raised both hands and lightly pinched his chin with his right thumb and forefinger as he asked strangely,
"Because of Nine-Tails Night, the village is deeply wary of the Uchiha and has always monitored us. Everyone knows that.
The question is, when exactly did I, Uchiha Yan, ever approach Naruto?"
"Just because I ate breakfast across from the Ninja Academy?"
"..."
I give up!!
Shisui really wanted to roll his eyes. That excuse was so solid that he did not even know what to say.
Konoha had indeed never restricted who could go to the Ninja Academy. Forget breakfast—even if Yan had nothing better to do and wandered around the Ninja Academy a couple of times every day, no one would say anything.
At most, the Anbu would keep an eye on him.
Was it strange for an Uchiha to be watched by the Anbu?
"But you didn't have to go every day when the students were heading to school."
"Yan, are you really there to eat, or do you have some other purpose?"
Shisui continued pressing him.
"You should know the current relationship between the clan and the village as well. Any careless action or mistake could worsen this conflict and distrust, so I hope you can..."
"Are you teaching me how to do things?"
Yan's voice turned icy, and his gaze at Shisui became displeased.
"What I, Uchiha Yan, do is not for others to point fingers at."
"Yan, that's not what I meant. I only..." Shisui hurriedly explained.
Yan cut him off.
"And remember your place. You are not qualified to demand what I should or should not do. If you want to order me around, fine—wait until you become the clan head."
The conversation ended on bad terms. Yan left, while Shisui sat dejectedly on a pockmarked stump, scratching his head in distress. Turning his head, he smiled bitterly.
"Itachi, am I such a failure?"
In the woods not far from the training field, Itachi, who had arrived long ago but never revealed himself, slowly emerged from the shadows.
"Shisui, perhaps Lord Hokage is being a little too sensitive?"
Itachi understood Shisui's troubles well.
After all, he and Shisui were on the same side.
Itachi had also heard quite a bit about Yan's strange behavior, but Yan had never approached Naruto. Yet the higher-ups had sought out Shisui over this matter.
Caught in the middle and torn between both sides, Shisui had hoped to resolve the matter through a conversation.
Unfortunately, he had messed it up.
