History

Crow's Nest was the largest armed power in Velen during the Third Northern War. Its core garrison consisted of Temerian veterans led by the Bloody Baron, who had occupied the fortress after Temeria's retreat. Nilfgaard chose not to seize it directly, instead recognizing the Baron's rule while demanding regular supplies. This policy forced the garrison toward looting, alienated local civilians, and gradually undermined the Baron's authority and reputation 19 20.

Ron and Karl first entered Crow's Nest through its front gate with ten armored cavalrymen. Their disciplined appearance sharply contrasted with the fortress's disorganized guards and drew immediate attention from the villagers and garrison 20.

Following an agreement with the Baron, Ron's soldiers began rotating into Crow's Nest for garrison duty and patrols. Their equipment, marching discipline, archery, and sparring skill gradually earned the respect of the local soldiers, while regular patrols made villagers less fearful of armed men in the streets 23.

Crow's Nest became a central base during the search for Ciri, Anna Strenger, and Tamara Strenger. Ciri and Gretka were sheltered there after Ron rescued them from a werewolf, while Geralt later used the fortress as a source of information and a meeting point during the investigation into the crones of Crookback Bog 37 38 46 52.

After Anna's rescue, the Baron departed with her and entrusted Ron with Crow's Nest's affairs, its garrison records, armory supplies, and responsibility for Tamara's welfare 57. Under Ron's administration, the settlement's trade, security, military training, industry, and construction expanded substantially 61 68 69 109.

Layout and Defenses

Crow's Nest is built on elevated limestone terrain, making its central fortress difficult to assault despite its limited strategic importance beyond controlling nearby villages 24.

Military Presence

The original Crow's Nest garrison was composed largely of poorly equipped local soldiers and Temerian veterans. Their mismatched armor, rusted halberds, uneven spear shafts, and lax marching discipline contrasted heavily with Ron's troops 23.

Ron integrated disciplined manor soldiers into the fortress's patrol and garrison system. Their purple surcoats, maintained chainmail, synchronized formations, and practice routines became a visible symbol of the settlement's changing order 23 45.
