Background / History
Erwin was a lecturer and doctoral scholar in Oxenfurt University's Department of History. His research concerned the Northern Wars and the Convergence of Spheres, and he intended to document the Third Northern War in a book before slave catchers captured him in Velen. His notes, manuscripts, and funding were lost with his capture. 1
While imprisoned, he invoked the Northern Realms War Code and the Cintra Armistice to demand protection for the rescued captives. After Ron's forces destroyed the slaver camp, Erwin offered his services as an unpaid quartermaster in exchange for food, beginning with a full inventory of the camp's supplies, weapons, and horses. 2 3
He became one of Ron's chief sources of local knowledge, explaining Velen's history, Nilfgaard's occupation, and the likely Convergence of Spheres that brought the Calradian soldiers into the Northern Kingdoms. 3 4 Though initially interested in recording war, his experience in Velen left him disillusioned; he remained with Ron because he believed Ron had not yet become indifferent to the suffering around him. 9
The Companion System later recognized Erwin's loyalty and formally added him as Ron's first companion. He proposed the name Calrad Mercenary Company and designed its purple lion banner. 15 Ron subsequently appointed him Steward of Calrad Manor, giving him authority over civilian development, finances, logistics, construction, and administration. 23
Appearance
Erwin is a gaunt scholar with gray-blue eyes and glasses. After his rescue, he wore oversized clothes taken from a corpse and used glasses missing one shattered lens, giving him the appearance of a destitute scribe. 3
- Usually carries a writing board, clipboard, ledger, notebook, or bundles of reports. 3 22 68
- Frequently adjusts or wipes his glasses while thinking through a problem. 8 20 74
- Often has mud, ink, or signs of long work hours on his clothes while overseeing the manor's projects. 28 68
Personality
Erwin is practical, self-reliant, and meticulous. Rather than merely expressing gratitude after his rescue, he immediately offered useful labor, catalogued the camp's resources, and consistently supported his proposals with records, maps, budgets, or reports. 3 22 30
His scholarship did not leave him detached from Velen's misery. Having seen civilians starve, flee, and die during the war, he rejects romanticized ideas of warfare and urges Ron not to accept cruelty as normal. 9 This concern extends to his work: he monitors disrupted intelligence routes, arranges care for survivors and orphans, and carefully records compensation for fallen soldiers' families. 59 75
Although usually composed, Erwin can become visibly anxious when confronted with unfamiliar dangers. He was deeply unsettled by the Horn of Plenty and responded by sealing it in the underground vault, summoning Carl, and restricting knowledge of the artifact. 73 74 Once he has assessed a situation, however, he rapidly turns concern into planning and action. 100
