Background / History

Chen Huai'an first fills the Purple-Skinned Gourd with ordinary stream water after surviving his fall from the cliff. The gourd holds an extraordinary volume of water, lowering the nearby lake’s level despite remaining nearly weightless in his hand 2.

After arriving at Qingyun Sect, Chen discovers that the stored water has become sweet and spiritually beneficial. Inside the gourd’s mist-covered space, he finds an emerald-green springhead containing water with the same taste and effects 3.

The water becomes Chen’s earliest cultivation resource, but its supply proves finite. After he exhausts it, he learns that newly added water initially has little effect, then gains potency after remaining in the Purple-Skinned Gourd for longer periods 4. His attempt to sell a jar exposes its value to Zhang Hu, beginning a conflict over the supposed location of its “spirit spring” 5 7.

Once assigned to Qingyun Sect’s water-hauling duty, Chen secretly collects water from the sect’s Spirit Spring pool. Refinement inside the gourd space transforms this already spiritual water into lower-grade Spirit Spring Water, a more potent version than the ungraded water he had previously used 17 18.
