But at this moment, the girl's face was as pale as paper, even her lips devoid of color. The cause of it all was the enormous gash in her abdomen.
The wound was horrifying. The outlines of her internal organs were faintly visible, while blood continuously streamed from the wound.
If this continued, the girl would certainly die.
It was easy to see that FrostNova was truly anxious. Before Han Fei could speak, she pressed him again. "You have such incredible methods. You can save her, can't you?"
The girl still retained a sliver of consciousness. With difficulty, she lifted her head and looked at FrostNova and Han Fei, her lips moving soundlessly as she failed to form a complete sentence.
With injuries this severe, on this resource-starved tundra, all she could do was wait for death.
The girl knew that perfectly well, yet her eyes still held a desire to live.
The sight was heartbreaking enough that some of the Yetis had already begun quietly wiping away tears.
The members of the Yeti Squad were deeply bonded, like brothers and sisters in everyday life. Now that one of their companions was gravely wounded and on the verge of dying, how could they possibly hold back their tears?
Even FrostNova's face bore obvious sorrow.
The atmosphere grew heavy for a moment, but Han Fei was the exception.
"Don't worry. With me here, you won't die."
The sadness did not affect Han Fei. He grinned at the girl. "Meeting me means you're lucky."
Han Fei crouched down, pulled out the Hormone Gun, and jabbed it directly into the girl's abdomen.
"Bear with it. It'll be over soon."
The white Hormone Gun began beeping, and the fresh green hormones within it flowed continuously through the barrel and into the girl's body.
Before long, the beeping stopped. Han Fei instinctively raised his hand and gave the girl another shot.
Something miraculous happened.
Color visibly returned to the girl's complexion, and her deathly pale face gradually came back to life.
The Yeti Squad members held their breath as they watched, their pupils reflecting this near-miraculous scene. The grief on their faces was gradually replaced by shock.
Not just the Yeti Squad—even Han Fei clicked his tongue in amazement.
In Delta Force, no matter how badly the GTI Superhumans were injured, even without treatment, they could keep bouncing around as long as they popped a painkiller and got a shot of health. At most, it reduced their maximum health. It was nothing serious.
But now, this infected girl lying on the ground felt a little like a GTI Superhuman.
The wound in her stomach had clearly not healed, and her organs were still faintly visible, yet her complexion had become as rosy as a normal person's.
Such a contrast, happening in reality... Hive Doctor's Hormone Gun was truly absurd.
Seeing her companion improve, joy slowly appeared on FrostNova's face. Yet she did not speak; even her breathing became lighter.
She was afraid—afraid that her actions would distract Han Fei and cause the treatment to fail.
Only after Han Fei put away the Hormone Gun did FrostNova impatiently ask, "Has she been saved?"
"More or less."
Han Fei shrugged. "But don't celebrate too early. We still need to stitch up the wound in her abdomen."
Though the girl's face was rosy now, she was not a real GTI Superhuman. If the wound in her abdomen was not properly treated, that would definitely not do.
The words "don't celebrate too early" instantly wiped the joy from FrostNova's face. Her expression turned serious. "What do you need me to do?"
"The good news is, I know how to stitch wounds." Han Fei shrugged. "The bad news is that aside from the Hormone Gun, I didn't bring any medical supplies."
Han Fei's three-in-one ability was not merely a combination of an operator's three skills. The moment he selected a character, the abilities they excelled in would appear in his mind out of thin air.
—Otherwise, he would not have been able to use the operators' equipment and skills so skillfully.
Hive Doctor naturally excelled in medicine. As a member of a special forces support group, stitching wounds was no challenge for him.
FrostNova was decisive. After hearing Han Fei's explanation, she immediately said, "Given her condition, it's best not to delay any longer. Use ordinary needle and thread to stitch up her wound first."
The infected girl lying on the ground was much clearer-headed now. Hearing this, she agreed, "Do as Big Sister says, Doctor. Don't worry, I'm not afraid of pain."
Since they both agreed, Han Fei had no objections. "Then let's change locations first. Carry her inside, then find some needle and thread."
"I have some!"
There was no need to look. A Yeti Squad member immediately brought over some needle and thread.
Han Fei took the needle and thread and gave them a simple sterilization. After the others carried the girl into the wooden cabin, he began stitching her wound.
This was delicate work. Since a life was at stake, Han Fei put away his usual carefree attitude and focused entirely on stitching the girl's wound.
The organs beneath the wound did not distract Han Fei. Silent and focused, he moved the needle and thread in his hands.
One stitch, two stitches, three stitches...
As the needle pierced flesh for the seventh time, the girl suddenly arched her body and let out a miserable scream.
The scream came so suddenly that quite a few members of the Yeti Squad watching nearby jumped in fright.
Han Fei naturally knew what was happening. The girl had not cried out earlier only because the hormone injection had a suppressive effect, dulling her pain enough for her to endure it.
Now that the injection's effects were fading, the overwhelming pain had arrived, and the girl could no longer bear it.
Han Fei knew exactly what to do in this situation.
Without even looking up, he directly pulled out the Hormone Gun and fired a shot at the girl.
"Don't scream. I'll be done soon."
The injection worked instantly. The moment it hit her, the screams disappeared.
With the annoying screaming gone, Han Fei resumed stitching the wound.
The fireplace blazed brightly, casting Han Fei's focused profile in golden light.
FrostNova watched silently from the side. She saw beads of sweat seep from Han Fei's forehead, slide down his jaw, and fall onto his inspector's uniform, leaving dark marks.
It was strange. The inspector's uniform that FrostNova had found so unpleasant before now seemed somewhat more pleasing to the eye.
Perhaps the fire in the fireplace was burning too fiercely. By the time Han Fei finished stitching the wound, his forehead was covered in sweat.
"Done. It's all stitched up."
Han Fei tied off and cut the thread, then stood. "Isn't it a little too hot in here?"
"Thank you for your hard work."
A cool handkerchief appeared in FrostNova's hand, and she placed it against Han Fei's forehead.
Volume One: Chapter Fifteen: Healing Smoke
The moment his skin touched the handkerchief, the icy sensation made Han Fei instinctively pull his neck back.
The good news: the handkerchief carried the girl's body heat.
The bad news: the girl was FrostNova.
"Sorry."
FrostNova withdrew her hand and looked at Han Fei apologetically. "I didn't mean to startle you."
"I know."
Han Fei waved a hand and explained, "Don't take it to heart."
He had recoiled only as an instinctive reaction to the cold, not because he was unwilling to have physical contact with FrostNova.
As they spoke, a Yeti cautiously approached and tentatively asked, "Um, Doctor, could you take a look at me?"
Han Fei glanced over and saw that the man's arm was wrapped in a bandage. The bandaging was somewhat sloppy, clearly done by someone unskilled. The bleeding had stopped, but the pain had not lessened, making him occasionally bare his teeth and suck in cold breaths.
As the big sister of the Yeti Squad, FrostNova felt bad seeing her companion like this. But out of politeness, she still stopped him. "Your wound has already been bandaged. Don't trouble Han Fei."
After what had happened earlier, FrostNova had become completely convinced that Han Fei's injections were exceptionally valuable—if they could save someone with such terrible injuries and temporarily suppress the Oripathy tormenting her, how could they possibly be cheap?
And they had only met by chance. How could she have the nerve to trouble him further?
"Alright."
The young Yeti looked disappointed, but he still obeyed FrostNova's words.
"Wait. Don't rush off."
Han Fei stopped the Yeti who was about to leave. "Don't listen to your big sister. This really isn't any trouble."
"But..."
FrostNova wanted to say more, but Han Fei raised one finger and pressed it against her lips.
"Shh. Listen to me."
The touch was fleeting. Han Fei gave FrostNova no chance to react. As soon as he finished speaking, he turned away.
FrostNova bit her lower lip, and a strange look appeared in her eyes as she watched Han Fei's back.
Aside from her adoptive father, Patriot, no one had ever dared treat her like that.
With his back turned, Han Fei said to the Yeti, "Go call over everyone who's injured. Have them gather at the entrance."
"Everyone?" the Yeti confirmed.
"Yes, everyone," Han Fei said.
"Oh, alright. I'll go right away."
Han Fei's medical skills had already been proven, so the young Yeti had no doubts. He ran out at once to gather the wounded as Han Fei instructed.
After he left, FrostNova walked before Han Fei and raised her head to meet his eyes. "You don't need to waste precious resources on us. They're only minor wounds. They'll pass if we endure them."
Han Fei did not answer, merely studying FrostNova with curiosity.
That gaze confused FrostNova. She lowered her head and looked herself over, but saw nothing unusual. Raising her head again, she asked in confusion, "Is there something on me?"
"No. I just realized you're actually pretty tall." Han Fei smiled.
In the main story of Arknights, FrostNova had long since become someone from the past.
Han Fei's memories of FrostNova were all from a Christmas several years ago.
Time erased unimportant memories, leaving behind only the unforgettable fragments.
Just like now, before seeing FrostNova, he had forgotten much of what he remembered about the little white rabbit. He only remembered the words she had left behind before departing: "I voluntarily join Rhodes Island."
Now that a living, breathing FrostNova stood before him again, Han Fei noticed details he had either never seen before or had seen but forgotten.
For instance, FrostNova really was tall. At least 170 centimeters, judging by eye—enough to be called tall among women.
At the same time, perhaps because nutrition on the tundra was insufficient, the little white rabbit's figure was not especially voluptuous. She could not exactly be described as sexy.
"Is that so?"
FrostNova narrowed her bright, beautiful eyes and stared at Han Fei suspiciously. "I feel like you're thinking something rude."
"Ahem, what are you talking about? You're overthinking it."
Han Fei brushed it off and changed the subject. "Let's go outside and see whether they've gathered."
Watching Han Fei's back, FrostNova wrinkled her cute little nose. Without much hesitation, she followed him.
Outside, injured people gradually came over and gathered together, forming a line.
Han Fei had thought there would not be many wounded. After all, when he had charged into the village first, he had dealt a heavy blow to the Infected Inspection Squad stationed there. A one-two combination of Nameless and Red Wolf had thrown the inspectors directly into chaos.
But it seemed Han Fei had been too optimistic.
There were already more than ten wounded standing before him, and more continued arriving.
The sight left Han Fei somewhat puzzled.
Were those Infected inspectors really that hard to fight? I didn't feel any pressure at all. Wasn't it all effortless? If we weren't on the tundra, I'd think they were Asara grunts.
But on second thought, Han Fei understood.
It was battle. Casualties were unavoidable. The fact that no one had died was already proof of the Yeti Squad's strength.
Besides, if the Infected Inspection Squad had no strength at all, they would not have been able to lord it over the tundra as they had.
Before long, all the wounded had gradually arrived. Seeing no one else coming, Han Fei confirmed, "Everyone's here, right?"
Someone in the crowd answered, "All the wounded are here."
Han Fei nodded. "Alright. Stand closer together."
The wounded did not understand why, but they still did as he said.
