Insect Techniques
Kikaichū Partnership
Aburame shinobi contract with insects, feed them their own chakra, and use their bodies as nests. The insects fight for their hosts; chakra is essential to their special abilities 12 664.
- Kikaichū can consume chakra of any nature and drain a target's chakra through direct contact 664 683.
- Their adaptability allows new generations to develop resistance to hazards. Shino expects offspring from a female Kikaichū trapped in crystal to resist that crystal 207.
- Scouting insects must return to their host to report. They cannot transmit intelligence instantly, and the information they convey is limited 207.
- Individual Kikaichū have minds too simple for ordinary genjutsu to affect. If their host is caught, they can disrupt the host's chakra flow to help break the illusion 619.
- The clan is described as relatively weak in close-quarters taijutsu; a prolonged fight gives its insects more time to adapt 207.
Insect Cultivation
The clan has developed dozens of insect varieties with different functions. Feeding Kikaichū Yang-nature chakra has produced healing, detoxifying, and reconnaissance variants; Yin-nature chakra has produced poisonous, hallucinogenic, and acid-spitting variants 664.
- External stimulation — The clan's mainstream method changes breeding conditions over successive generations. Heat-resistant Kikaichū, for example, are bred from hard-shelled insects under gradually increasing temperatures 340.
- Nature-chakra feeding — An older approach that has produced no new varieties in recent decades. Sword Star's Exploding Insects are an unusual success; his attempts with Earth and Wind chakra fail 340 355.
- Insect Cocoon — Shino uses this secret technique to hatch more insects urgently when his Kikaichū are insufficient 275.
Facilities and Equipment
- Insect House — Houses insects that cannot fit inside a contractor's body and provides space to cultivate and select them. Such facilities commonly carry a “No Entry” warning 637.
- Breeding and combat jars — Secretly crafted insect jars are central clan tools. Members carry combat jars outside; jars can store feeding chakra, influence insect development, or incorporate chakra metal for use as ninja tools 275.
- Inherited jars — The clan keeps powerful jars used by earlier members. Access requires strength and passing clan tests 275.
- Use in battle — Jars are especially useful to members combining multiple insect species. Shino instead relies chiefly on Kikaichū and does not habitually carry large jars 275.
Members and Connections
- Aburame Shishin — Insect user and one of Hyuga Hayato's few friends; Shino calls him his cousin 12 151.
- Shino Aburame — Uses Kikaichū for scouting and combat, including while guarding Yakumo Kurama and navigating an enemy crystal trap 153 207.
- Aburame Jianxing / Sword Star — Academy student who researches insect cultivation and develops insect-based combat techniques 254 340 921.
- Zauma Aburame — Sword Star's father, who advises him on his training and his fight with an Uchiha student 619 918.
- Reiko Aburame — Identified as Sword Star's mother; calls him away from his insect work for dinner 372.
- Torune Aburame — Joined Danzō's Root in Shino's place. He uses nano-sized poisonous insects and is later killed by Sasuke Uchiha 198 467 474.
- Ryoma Aburame — An older Root member whom an Aburame ANBU ninja knew; the ninja has received no news of him for years 198.
Root Recruitment
Danzō pressured the Aburame and other medium-sized Konoha clans to send a child into Root each generation. According to an Aburame ANBU ninja, the clan does not know which member enters in a given generation. Shino was originally meant to be sent in his generation, but Torune took his place 198.
