Background

The Heaven-Splitting Sword Sect was once the Central Region's second-greatest sect after the Eclosion Sect. Though it declined over time and fell outside the region's top five, it remained the foremost sect of Yuan Shen Province and surpassed the Spirit God Dao Sect in scale and caliber of experts 624.

The sect has endured for at least ten thousand years, although it is considered comparatively young beside ancient hidden powers and sects from prior eras 742 835. Its historical inheritance includes the sword paths of nine Sword Emperors and several high-level Sword Dao experts 756.

Chen Fan entered through Simo's connection, receiving inner-disciple status and an opportunity to attempt the true-disciple assessment. The sect's rules prevented even a Longevity expert from directly granting true-disciple status 623 624. Chen Fan later became a true disciple, earned access to the sect's core inheritances, and became one of its most prominent rising talents 657 666 839.

During the conflict over the Demon Prison Gate, the Sword Sect mobilized true disciples, Sword Pavilion elders, Dao Fruit experts, and Longevity cultivators. The battle destroyed the gate but cost the sect three Chang Sheng experts 670 689 693 694.

The sect's hidden patriarch, He Gu—formerly known as the Blood Sword Marquis—was awakened during the period of crisis despite the cost to his remaining lifespan. Chen Fan later healed his Demon God King-inflicted injuries with the Origin Pearl and an immortal elixir; He Gu subsequently advanced to King-sealing level 839 840 991 1017 1019.

After the sect was besieged by increasingly numerous hostile experts, its disciples were dispersed and its original headquarters in Yuan Shen Province was reduced to ruins 1144 1147. Chen Fan returned as an Immortal, rebuilt the sect on its former site with the Pengxuan Immortal Mansion, and formally assumed command as headmaster 1147.

The sect's true-disciple assessment is deliberately demanding: candidates may be required to confront three tenth-level Demon Kings under an Immortality-realm great demon 624 628.

True-disciple protections

True disciples bear death-triggered restrictions.

• Their final moments and killer's aura are transmitted to the Sword Pavilion if they are murdered.
• Their killer receives a mark that even an ordinary Chang Sheng cultivator cannot evade or remove.
• The sect issues vengeance missions against killers, which may be undertaken by true disciples or Sword Pavilion elders.
• The Canghai Sword Emperor previously slew a Chang Sheng elder of Formless Academy for killing a Sword Sect disciple 656.

Facilities and Resources

• Sword Pavilion — Core institutional center of the sect; manages major assessments, missions, true-disciple protections, and senior elders 628 656 670.
• Library Pavilion — Holds the original manuals of the Nine Great Sword Arts, along with secret arts and martial techniques. The original manuals are kept on the top floor and are normally restricted to the cultivator who selects each art 666 667.
• Nine Great Sword Arts — Peerless sword arts that can be cultivated through the Chang Sheng realm. Each embodies a sword path established by a historical Sword Emperor 667 756.
• Sword Realm — A cultivation realm containing nine sword diagrams corresponding to the Nine Great Sword Arts. It can sustain only one entrant at a time and permits a maximum of ten days of comprehension per entry 756 757.
• Stone Spirit — The giant stone being within the Sword Realm bore the nine sword diagrams upon its body. Chen Fan promised to free it if he gained control of the sect, then fulfilled that promise after becoming headmaster 756 757 1158.
• Enlightenment Pool — A special cultivation treasure controlled by the sect's hidden patriarch; its use is governed by specific rules 839.
• Martial Practice Pavilion — Venue for ranked challenges and sparring. Chen Fan fought into the true disciples' top ten in his first year after joining 751.
• Heaven-Splitting Tower — A semi-immortal artifact used for training and challenge trials 1186.
• Void-Seated Whale — One of the sect's four divine beasts; it can travel through chaotic space 651 689.
• Sect-protecting formation — A vast defensive formation guarding the headquarters. The original formation was broken during the Night Wraith Clan's assault, while the rebuilt sect is housed within the Pengxuan Immortal Mansion 624 1147 1148.

• Chen Fan — Former true disciple who became the sect's headmaster after rebuilding it with the Pengxuan Immortal Mansion 1147.
• Chen Tiangan — Former sect leader, Chen Qingru's father, and a fourth-level Chang Sheng expert during Chen Fan's early time in the sect 724 714.

• Rong Ziqi — One of the sect's “Twin Beauties”; later became its first Sword Queen 668 1114.
• Zhan Jianming — Eldest Senior Brother among the true disciples; remained with the sect during its crisis and later reached the third level of Chang Sheng 668 1147.

Following its reestablishment, the Sword Sect became the unrivaled dominant power of Yuan Shen Province. Its reputation drew geniuses from across the Central Region, and its annual recruitment and overall strength continued to expand 1176.

More than three thousand years after its reconstruction, the sect had grown dozens of times larger than before. Its headquarters remained within an immense immortal manor, and its disciple population exceeded one hundred million 1185 1186.
