Gary, Rosa, and Hilda traveled to Alola, earned Z-Crystals through Hala’s trials, and Gary befriended the wounded Zeraora. The group then joined the Pokémon School’s outdoor classes on Akala Island, where Gary and Lillie began their first forest assignment.

• Ash left Pallet Town for the Kanto Battle Frontier, while Gary, Rosa, and Hilda flew to Alola for a vacation.
• Tapu Koko gave Gary a Z-Ring, and Gary met Professor Kukui and Principal Chengye at the Pokémon School before agreeing to assist with battle classes.
• Gary defeated Kiawe in a training battle, then Hala approved Gary, Rosa, and Hilda for the Island Challenge and gave them their first trial.
• Gary, Rosa, and Hilda defeated the Totem Raticate and earned Dark-type Z-Crystals and Z-Rings.

Gary, Rosa, and Hilda passed trials, recovered the Crown of Vila, and climbed Mount Lanakila, where they befriended Alolan Vulpix and Totem Pokémon. The group left the mountain with three Vulpix, then Rosa and Hilda confronted Plumeria and Team Skull on Ula'ula Island.

• Oddish led Gary and Lillie to Totem Bellossom, and Gary defeated it in battle before accepting its ingredients and Grass-type Z-Crystal.
• Gary, Rosa, and Hilda passed Olivia's Preliminary Trial, and Lillie won the Stoutland treasure hunt after Gary argued that her progress was priceless.
• Bannai stole the Crown of Vila, but Professor Kukui and Olivia helped recover it and Officer Jenny arrested him.
• Gary defeated Olivia in a Double Battle at the Ruins of Life and received a Rock-type Z-Crystal, while Rosa and Hilda also passed their Grand Trials.
• A blizzard drove Gary, Rosa, and Hilda into a cave, where they defeated Totem Alolan Sandshrew and received three Ice Z-Crystals.
• Gary helped Rosa and Hilda meet Alolan Vulpix and Ninetales, and the Totem Alolan Ninetales let each of them choose a Vulpix and offered Gary a rare Vulpix of his own.
• Gary impressed Totem Alolan Ninetales in battle, caught the Pseudo-Legendary-potential Vulpix, and received Fairy-type Z-Crystals and Finest Ice Stones for their Pokémon.
• Rosa defeated Plumeria's Golbat and Hilda defeated her Salazzle, while an unknown voice interrupted their argument with Team Skull.

Gary won Nanu’s Grand Trial, captured Kartana, and clashed with Lusamine over Aether Paradise’s attempt to take it. After settling the dispute, he and his friends traveled to Poni Island, where they defeated Totem Kommo-o and explored the Altar of the Sunne.

• Gary defeated Nanu’s three Pokémon at the Ruins of Abundance and received an Electrium Z after telling Nanu he already had a Darkinium Z.
• Professor Kukui asked Gary, Rosa, and Hilda to investigate an Ultra Wormhole, and they found Kartana battling Gladion’s Type: Null.
• Gary defeated Kartana with Zeraora, caught it as his partner, and directed Gladion to Professor Kukui when Gladion asked to become his disciple.
• Lusamine asked Gary to lend Kartana for research, but Gary refused, and Kartana defeated Faba’s Alakazam when Faba tried to seize it.
• Gary confronted Lusamine about Faba’s experiment that had traumatized Lillie, and Lusamine later gave Gary three Master Balls as compensation while they began a secret relationship.
• Gary, Rosa, and Hilda learned they could not take Poni Island’s Grand Trial because the island had no Kahuna, then met Hapu as she trained to inherit the position.
• Gary and his friends entered Poni Grand Canyon, fought off Jangmo-o and Hakamo-o, and Gary’s Kartana defeated Totem Kommo-o.
• The Kommo-o tribe thanked Gary, Rosa, and Hilda with three Dragonium Z, and the group traveled to the Altar of the Sunne, where several figures suddenly flashed past them.

Gary accepted Cosmog from the Island Guardian Deities, left Alola with Rosa and Hilda, and defeated Ash in a Battle Pyramid match. After reaching Sinnoh, he helped Ash and Dawn reunite with Pikachu and began his journey through the region, where Paul challenged him to a battle.

• The Island Guardian Deities entrusted Cosmog to Gary and upgraded Gary, Rosa, and Hilda’s Z-Rings into Z-Power Rings, and Gary named Cosmog Little Nebula.
• Gary caught Little Nebula with its permission, then left Alola with Rosa and Hilda after a farewell party and a final battle against Gladion.
• Gary visited Rosa and Hilda’s mothers in Unova, then joined Professor Oak and Ash in Fennel Valley, where Ash defeated Brandon and cleared the Battle Frontier.
• Gary defeated Ash in a three-on-three Battle Pyramid match, and Ash regained his resolve and decided to travel to Sinnoh.
• Gary, Rosa, and Hilda reached Sinnoh, rescued Dawn and Pikachu from Team Rocket, and reunited Pikachu with Ash at Professor Rowan’s laboratory.
• Gary set off through Sinnoh with Rosa and Hilda, woke Rosa from Stantler’s illusion in Bewildering Woods, and put an angry Ursaring to sleep.
• Paul challenged Gary to a three-on-three battle to test the strength of the Ever Grande Conference champion, and Gary accepted.
