Background

Chong Chunyi graduated from the Grass Ninja Academy and became a genin at age eleven. The Grass Shadow had personally commended him, and the village regarded him as its foremost young expert and future hope. This status enabled him to act with near impunity around the orphanage children. 7 8

He once defeated Mizunoki, a classmate and subordinate, before Mizunoki left the village and joined Daimyo's Palace. Chong's earlier success and favorable treatment left him sheltered within the village, whereas Mizunoki gained battlefield experience and a powerful master. 20 23 25

Following his defeats and the death of Master Huo Xuan, Chong lost the Grass Shadow's favor and was left to fend for himself. He subsequently sought to regain standing by securing a valuable medicinal-herb field for the village. 49 55

Personality

Initially, Chong is cruel, arrogant, and deeply reliant on status. He dismisses village rules as restrictions for the weak, attacks Guan Shang for objecting to him, and is willing to have Guan Shang, Jin Cou, and Jin Mengzi killed over perceived disrespect. He claims never to leave anyone alive after they offend him. 7 8

He is also pragmatic when confronted with superior power. After Shui Daiyi reveals Yang Ming's standing under the Grass Shadow, Chong immediately begs for mercy, agrees to cease bullying the orphanage, and assigns his men to patrol it. 11 12

His later conduct is more restrained but remains self-interested. He seeks Yang Ming's aid against Mizunoki, relies heavily on Master Huo Xuan's reputation, and later approaches Yang Ming again in hopes of recovering favor through the medicinal-herb dispute. 20 21 49

Chong is capable of recognizing the consequences of his former arrogance. When faced with Mizunoki's revenge, he acknowledges that the titles and protection he once relied on kept him confined and unprepared for real conflict. 25

Story Role / Major Arcs

Orphanage Confrontation

Chong and his followers attempt to claim the orphanage children's picnic area. When Guan Shang resists, Chong attacks him; he subsequently threatens to kill Guan Shang, Jin Cou, and Jin Mengzi. 7 8

Yang Ming intervenes, defeats Chong's black-clad subordinate and more than a dozen followers, then prepares to confront Chong directly. Shui Daiyi interrupts and identifies Yang Ming as a genius personally chosen by the Grass Shadow. Chong submits, receives mercy, and promises to protect the orphanage. 9 12

Conflict with Mizunoki

While patrolling near the orphanage as promised, Chong is severely wounded by Mizunoki. He asks Yang Ming to help restrain Mizunoki while Master Huo Xuan attacks with Fire Style. 20 21

Chong's ambush fails, Huo Xuan is killed, and Mizunoki prepares to execute him. Yang Ming ultimately intervenes, kills Mizunoki, and orders Chong to handle the aftermath and deliver Huo Xuan's promised payment. 23 27

Medicinal-Herb Dispute

After losing the Grass Shadow's favor, Chong brings Yang Ming information about a warm, red-glowing herb discovered behind the village, hoping a victory will help him redeem himself. 49

The herb proves not to be Flamewarm Grass. Chong nevertheless joins Yang Ming in confronting rogue ninja led by Komori Taisei, with Mita Taisei overseeing their agreed strength-based contest for ownership. 50

Komori Taisei's display of swordsmanship frightens Chong into recognizing that he cannot win through his own strength. Yang Ming ultimately wins the contest, after which Mita awards the medicinal field to the Grass Ninja Village. Chong arranges for its harvest and protection. 51 52 55

Chizuru Koichi Crisis

Following Mizunoki's death, Chong attends the Grass Shadow's gathering of senior Grass Ninja to address the likely retaliation of Mizunoki's master, Chizuru Koichi, captain of the Daimyo's Palace guard. He identifies Koichi's disciple Kawabata Nozomu as a particularly dangerous swordsman capable of contending with a jonin. 62 63
