Background / History
Kurama was originally part of the Ten-Tails before Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki divided its chakra into nine tailed beasts. Hagoromo gave Kurama slightly more chakra than the others, making him the strongest of the tailed beasts. Kurama also remembers Hagoromo's prophecy of a blue-eyed youth who would call the names of all nine beasts and reunite them. 16
Madara Uchiha later captured Kurama with the Mangekyo Sharingan, placed chakra armor on him, and used him against Hashirama Senju. Hashirama defeated Kurama with Wood Release before Mito Uzumaki sealed him inside herself. After Mito's death, Kurama was transferred into Kushina Uzumaki as her successor. 7 37
During Kushina's childbirth, Obito Uchiha released and controlled Kurama to attack Konoha. Minato Namikaze sealed half of Kurama's chakra inside himself, while Kushina sealed the remaining half within newborn Naruto. Kurama resented being repeatedly captured, controlled, and treated as a weapon without regard for his will. 17 27 37
Kurama first attempts to persuade Naruto into removing his seal, promising power and revenge against the villagers. Naruto sees through the deception, taunts him with knowledge of Madara and Hashirama, and leaves Kurama enraged and confused. 7 Naruto's later knowledge of Kurama's name, Hagoromo, the other tailed beasts, Obito, and Madara's future plans gradually earns Kurama's attention. 16 17
Kurama's attitude changes after realizing Naruto does not blame him for the suffering caused by his jinchūriki status. Their repeated conversations develop into friendship, and Kurama begins to view Naruto as someone who genuinely understands his captivity and loneliness. 37 39
Naruto ultimately chooses to break Kurama's seal with Minato and Kushina's support. Although Kurama briefly acts as though he intends to run wild, he immediately reins in his aura when Naruto calls him out. He and Naruto seal their friendship with a fist bump, after which Kurama promises to protect him. 40 41
Appearance
Within Naruto's consciousness space, Kurama appears as an enormous orange fox, described as being as large as a small hill. He possesses nine constantly swaying tails, vertical fox pupils, and an ominous chakra aura. 7
- Orange fur and a massive fox-like body. 7
- Nine tails, which often reveal his mood even when he tries to appear indifferent. 7 17
- Vertical pupils and a powerful tailed-beast presence. 7 16
- Was initially held inside a cage of crimson sealing pillars within Naruto's inner world. 7
Personality
Kurama is proud, sharp-tongued, and easily provoked by reminders of Madara Uchiha, Hashirama Senju, and his long imprisonment. He initially tries to exploit Naruto's resentment toward Konoha, believing that offering power and revenge will convince the boy to remove the seal. 7
Beneath his hostility, Kurama is deeply sensitive to betrayal and captivity. His ability to sense malice lets him recognize that Naruto genuinely harbors none toward him, despite suffering because Kurama was sealed inside him. This realization becomes the foundation of their friendship. 16 37
He becomes openly curious about Naruto's knowledge of the future, eagerly asking questions about Obito, Madara, and the coming war. Even after accepting Naruto as a friend, Kurama maintains a haughty, tsundere manner—denying their friendship while offering help and protection. 17 39
Abilities & Skills
Tailed Beast Chakra
Kurama possesses immense chakra and is regarded as the strongest of the tailed beasts due to receiving a greater share of chakra when Hagoromo divided the Ten-Tails. 16
- Can lend chakra to Naruto to dramatically increase his speed, strength, recovery, and overall combat power. 38 42
- His chakra can support a Tailed Beast cloak and eventually allow Naruto to pursue Kurama Mode and a perfect jinchūriki state. 38 42
- Naruto can temporarily reach Kage-level strength through Kurama's chakra. 43
- Naruto cannot safely draw too much chakra at once because his body is still developing; excessive intake can harm him. 42
Malice Sensing
Kurama can sense malicious intent and distinguish between benevolent and hostile thoughts outside normal ninja sensory methods. 16
- Recognized that Naruto held no malice toward him despite Konoha's treatment of Naruto. 16 37
- His perception of human hatred and betrayal is shaped by centuries of being used as a weapon. 16 37
Chakra and Seal Perception
As Naruto's tailed beast, Kurama can perceive changes within Naruto's body and the state of his seal. 8
- Notices Naruto's growing physical strength and the reinforcement of the seal after Naruto gains the complete Uzumaki physique. 8
- Previously leaked small amounts of chakra when Naruto's emotions fluctuated, gradually eroding the seal. 8 37
- Can communicate with Naruto in the consciousness space and share observations from Naruto's memories. 37
Tailed Beast Presence
Kurama can project overwhelming chakra pressure even while confined. Naruto remains unaffected by this intimidation, but the pressure is described as sufficient to immobilize an ordinary chunin. 16
- His released aura frightens Minato and Kushina when the seal is broken. 40
- While sealed, the cage prevents his claws, chakra, and attacks from directly reaching Naruto. 7
