Background / History

Kurama was originally part of the Ten-Tails before Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki divided its chakra into nine tailed beasts. Hagoromo gave Kurama slightly more chakra than the others, making him the strongest of the tailed beasts. Kurama also remembers Hagoromo's prophecy of a blue-eyed youth who would call the names of all nine beasts and reunite them. 16

Madara Uchiha later captured Kurama with the Mangekyo Sharingan, placed chakra armor on him, and used him against Hashirama Senju. Hashirama defeated Kurama with Wood Release before Mito Uzumaki sealed him inside herself. After Mito's death, Kurama was transferred into Kushina Uzumaki as her successor. 7 37

During Kushina's childbirth, Obito Uchiha released and controlled Kurama to attack Konoha. Minato Namikaze sealed half of Kurama's chakra inside himself, while Kushina sealed the remaining half within newborn Naruto. Kurama resented being repeatedly captured, controlled, and treated as a weapon without regard for his will. 17 27 37

Kurama first attempts to persuade Naruto into removing his seal, promising power and revenge against the villagers. Naruto sees through the deception, taunts him with knowledge of Madara and Hashirama, and leaves Kurama enraged and confused. 7 Naruto's later knowledge of Kurama's name, Hagoromo, the other tailed beasts, Obito, and Madara's future plans gradually earns Kurama's attention. 16 17

Kurama's attitude changes after realizing Naruto does not blame him for the suffering caused by his jinchūriki status. Their repeated conversations develop into friendship, and Kurama begins to view Naruto as someone who genuinely understands his captivity and loneliness. 37 39

Naruto ultimately chooses to break Kurama's seal with Minato and Kushina's support. Although Kurama briefly acts as though he intends to run wild, he immediately reins in his aura when Naruto calls him out. He and Naruto seal their friendship with a fist bump, after which Kurama promises to protect him. 40 41

Beneath his hostility, Kurama is deeply sensitive to betrayal and captivity. His ability to sense malice lets him recognize that Naruto genuinely harbors none toward him, despite suffering because Kurama was sealed inside him. This realization becomes the foundation of their friendship. 16 37
