Background / History
Hinata was born into the Hyuga Clan's main family as Hiashi Hyuga's eldest daughter. As a young child, she was close to her cousin Neji, who treated her as a younger sister before the main family placed the Caged Bird curse mark on him when she turned three. Their relationship deteriorated as Neji came to resent the main-family system and his assigned fate. 44 50
During the same period, a Hidden Cloud shinobi abducted Hinata in an attempt to obtain the Hyuga Clan's Byakugan. Hiashi rescued her, but the political settlement that followed led to Hizashi Hyuga's death in Hiashi's place, further deepening Neji's resentment toward Hinata and the main family. 44 50
On another childhood outing, Hinata was surrounded and mocked by village children who demanded that she activate her still-unawakened Byakugan. Naruto intervened despite being physically weaker than the group; he was badly beaten but kept Hinata unharmed. At her insistence, Hyuga ninja brought Naruto to the clan compound for treatment. Naruto left before she could thank him, unwilling to burden people who feared him. 46 47
Naruto's act of protection became a lasting influence on Hinata. She began watching him from afar and wanted to become someone who persevered as he did. Her feelings for him were already evident when she entered the Ninja Academy, although Hiashi initially restricted her from spending time with Naruto. 26 47
Personality
Hinata is initially timid, soft-spoken, and easily embarrassed, particularly around Naruto. She struggles to meet his eyes, fidgets when speaking to him, and becomes flustered by his attention. 25 28 30
Beneath this shyness, she is persistent and resilient. During Naruto's running training, she continued after reaching her physical limit because she wanted to keep up with him; even after stopping, she retained a determined expression. 29
Naruto recognizes her as gentle and kind but insists that she was never truly weak. Under his influence and her own effort, she grows more confident, becomes able to face others normally, and develops greater resolve in her path as a ninja. 44 45 46
