Background / History

During the Warring States Era, the Uchiha were one of the two strongest shinobi clans alongside the Senju. The clans were routinely hired by opposing sides, and their conflict claimed much of Madara Uchiha's family; only his younger brother Izuna remained alive for a time. 34

Madara and Hashirama Senju met as children without initially knowing each other's clan identities. They shared the dream of ending warfare by founding a village where children would not be sent to battle. Their fathers' attempted ambush ended their friendship and prompted Madara to awaken the Sharingan while protecting Izuna. 34

After Izuna was mortally wounded by Tobirama Senju, he gave his eyes to Madara, allowing Madara to awaken the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan. Though Madara initially resisted peace, Hashirama's willingness to sacrifice himself convinced him to reconcile; the Uchiha and Senju subsequently founded Konoha with other clans. 34 35

Madara was not chosen as the First Hokage despite Hashirama's support, as the other clans favored Hashirama. Isolated by the village and distrustful that Tobirama would succeed Hashirama, Madara urged the Uchiha to leave Konoha with him. No clansmen followed him, having grown accustomed to peace, and Madara departed alone. 35

Under Tobirama, the Uchiha became the principal members of the Konoha Military Police Force. The position gave the clan authority in maintaining order but also functioned as a means of monitoring it. Dissatisfaction persisted over Senju influence, exclusion from the Hokage position, losses in the Third Shinobi World War without compensation, and continued suspicion from Konoha's leadership. 13 35

Bloodline Abilities

Sharingan

The Sharingan is the Uchiha Clan's hereditary ocular ability, described as the “Eye That Reflects the Heart.” It manifests when intense emotions cause special chakra to stimulate an Uchiha's eyes. 17

• Develops through one-, two-, and three-tomoe stages; awakening a three-tomoe Sharingan is considered the mark of a genius. 34
• Its awakening is linked to powerful emotional stimulation, particularly love and loss, but requires sufficient innate constitution to endure its power. 17
• The Sharingan's ability to control the Nine-Tails made the clan a prime suspect after the Nine-Tails Rampage. 13

Mangekyo Sharingan

The Mangekyo Sharingan is a higher evolution beyond the three-tomoe Sharingan, known only to a limited number of clan heads and passed down as confidential knowledge. 34

• Requires immense emotional upheaval and exceptional talent to awaken. 34
• Grants distinct ocular techniques far exceeding the three-tomoe Sharingan's power. 34
• Its techniques consume ocular power; excessive use progressively damages vision and can result in blindness. 34
• Not every Uchiha can physically endure Mangekyo-level power, even if given such eyes. 17

Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan

The Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan is obtained by fusing another person's Mangekyo Sharingan with one's own, with success more likely between close blood relatives. 34

• Madara awakened it after inheriting Izuna's eyes. 34
• Reduces ocular-power consumption and allows depleted ocular power to recover over time. 34
• Its difficult requirements caused it to fade into legend among most clan members. 34

Organization and Current Situation

• Konoha Military Police Force — Established by Tobirama Senju and primarily staffed by Uchiha. Its captain is the clan head and holds prestige second only to the Hokage. 35
• Remote residence — After the Nine-Tails Rampage, the clan compound was relocated to Konoha's most remote area because the clan could not disprove suspicions tied to the Sharingan's ability to control the Nine-Tails. 13
• Radical faction — Seeks rebellion or defection from Konoha in response to perceived oppression by the village's upper ranks. 36
• Conservative faction — Resents Konoha's treatment but wishes to remain in the village and endure rather than leave. 36
• Moderates — Fugaku positions himself between the factions, seeking a path that preserves the clan without open revolt or passive decline. 36
• Spy-incident response — Fugaku accepted Hiruzen's request for expanded patrols and investigations, viewing the assignment as an opportunity to repair the clan's image. Some members regarded the order as exploitation, while others carried it out to rebuild trust with villagers. 23

Notable Members

• Madara Uchiha — Former clan leader, co-founder of Konoha, and the first documented wielder of the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan. He later left the village alone after the clan refused to follow him. 34 35
• Izuna Uchiha — Madara's younger brother and trusted aide; gave Madara his eyes before dying from wounds inflicted by Tobirama. 34
• Fugaku Uchiha — Current clan head and a moderate seeking reconciliation with Konoha. He sees Naruto Uzumaki's possible rise to Hokage, and Sasuke's friendship with him, as a potential route to restoring the clan's standing. 23 36

• Senju Clan — Former Warring States enemy and co-founder of Konoha; their historical rivalry and the Senju's political dominance underpin much of the Uchiha's resentment. 34 35
• Hidden Leaf Village — The clan is a founding pillar of Konoha but has a strained relationship with villagers and upper leadership, intensified by suspicion following the Nine-Tails Rampage. 13 35
• Hiruzen Sarutobi — Regards the clan's position as politically awkward and believes Itachi may understand the conflict through the Will of Fire; Fugaku nevertheless considers Naruto's approval by Hiruzen a possible opening for reconciliation. 13 36
