Background
Morty transmigrated into a parallel America and gradually recognized his family as the Smiths from Rick and Morty. He realized that his grandfather Rick had been missing for twenty years, initially viewing that absence as a relief because of Rick’s terrifying reputation and capability 1.
Rick returned shortly afterward and immediately began taking Morty on interdimensional adventures. Morty initially regarded Rick as an overwhelmingly useful “golden thigh,” hoping to obtain advanced technology such as Portal Gun construction and portal-fluid replenishment methods rather than become independently powerful 2 5.
Although commonly called C-167 Morty, his identity is more complicated. A Soul Research Institute certificate states that his soul is not the original Morty’s soul, but two souls merged into one; later records raise the possibility that Suit Rick identified him as M-69595 instead 554 595.
Appearance
Morty initially wears the standard yellow T-shirt associated with Mortys, partly because he believed it could help him blend in among other Mortys. He later adopts a custom tactical suit and more formal appearance for Rick’s diplomatic operation 152.
- Standard yellow Morty T-shirt during his earlier adventures 152
- Custom suit, leather shoes, and an adult-styled hairstyle for diplomatic work 152
- Can reshape or dismiss his physical shell entirely after his Great Old One transformation 98 103
- Temporarily developed a face split between sorrow and rage after severe consciousness damage 423
Personality
Morty begins as frightened, cautious, and highly aware that Rick could kill or manipulate him with ease. Even when he wants power, his early ambition is practical: acquire enough technology to avoid being helpless in a multiverse controlled by stronger beings 1 5 96.
Repeated adventures make him increasingly assertive and independent. He insists on solving Cthulhu-related problems without Rick’s help, challenges Flymen authorities, and eventually resents Rick’s attempts to shape his choices through tests, memory manipulation, and power suppression 22 155 232 474.
He is an adaptable strategist rather than a consistently heroic figure. Morty uses deception, intimidation, blackmail, propaganda, and calculated violence when he believes they are useful, including manipulating followers with promises of longevity and conducting ruthless interrogations 161 256 552. However, he also shows attachment to Summer, guilt after mistreating her, and concern for people caught in larger conflicts 227 230.
Morty dislikes being treated as a subordinate, mascot, or disposable “Morty.” His political campaign centers on convincing Mortys that they should become difficult for Ricks to control rather than obedient accessories 449 550 552.
Abilities & Skills
Enhanced Intellect
Mega Fruit dramatically expands Morty’s processing capacity and analytical ability, enabling him to understand complex systems and improve technology beyond his former limits 8 127.
- Upgraded the Mr. Meeseeks Box into a more advanced version capable of complex problem-solving and structural design 36
- Deduces Rick’s hidden objectives and plans operations around both infiltration and spectacle 149
- Uses political analysis, recordings, decoys, and public perception against Dark Evil Morty during the Citadel election 557 561
- His intelligence can be impaired by compounds that counter Cthulhu Magic Potion 574
Great Old One Physiology
Morty’s Magic Potion transformation gives him a mutable shell and access to abilities associated with Great Old Ones 96 98.
- Can reshape his shell after touching an object in the Black-and-White Line World 101
- Can rapidly regenerate damaged skin using divine power 177
- Can become a soul entity by dismissing his physical form 103
- Soul form resists most physical damage but remains vulnerable to magical or specialized anti-soul attacks 348 421
Black-and-White Line World
Morty can alter his perception of the environment into a slowed, line-based state that supports infiltration and manipulation 101 104.
- Freezes or slows many weaker targets 104
- Passes through walls while vaporized 104
- Reads memories to locate targets, systems, and critical locations 104
- Cannot rely on the ability alone for direct physical strength; copied forms do not automatically grant superior combat power 101
Lord of Mind
Morty’s primary former combat system used thought energy and constructs, supported by Cthulhu-derived power 206.
- Creates consciousness bodies and mind-constructs, including the Four Chaos Gods 229 232
- Can create weapons and restraints from psychic energy, such as the Green Dragon Crescent Blade and psychic handcuffs 232 256
- Can form air walls for defense and mobility 177 230
- Produced up to 8,020 consciousness bodies, though sustained deployment severely taxed his available resources 229 232
- Rick eventually crippled the ability due to Morty’s dependence on cannon-fodder tactics 577
Mind Creation and Dark Matter
Morty can use detailed designs and subconscious construction to create physical technology, turning his mind into a portable factory 242 247.
- Requires schematics and sufficient understanding to create complex devices effectively 242 247
- Built production lines, manufacturing robots, and combat robots during his confrontation with Rick 474
- Extracted dark matter to create armor, a stabilized axe, spears, and high-damage attacks 475 518
- Excessive dark-matter extraction can push his body toward collapse and catastrophic collateral damage 490
Equipment
- Portal Gun — Used for interdimensional travel and escape; Morty seeks to learn its construction and fuel production from Rick 5 30.
- Mr. Meeseeks Box 2.0 — Morty’s upgraded box produces more capable Meeseeks; Rick later adds eight specialized output modes 36 127.
- Customized AK-47 — Rick-built weapon with two forms, a light-absorbing black coating, suppressor, detachable grip, and multifunction display 151.
- Tactical suit — Custom formal combat wear with a mental-intent control interface and romance-prevention functions 152.
- Energy gun — Used during his confrontation with Old K and in later combat 97 430.
- Green Dragon Crescent Blade / Azure Dragon Blade — A long psychic weapon created through continuous thought-energy output 232 256.
- Memory reader — Carried during the Citadel election; Dark Evil Morty steals it after killing a decoy Morty 554.
Relationships
- Rick P850 — Grandfather, mentor, manipulator, and frequent source of Morty’s frustration. Rick trains him, supplies technology, and tests him, but also erases memories and suppresses abilities in the name of protecting his growth 8 149 232 474 577.
- Summer Smith — Older sister. Their relationship begins with open hostility, but she repeatedly intervenes for Morty, fights alongside him, and accepts his later apology 1 97 227 431.
- Beth Smith — Mother. Beth worries for Morty’s health and remains deeply affected by Rick’s apparent death or absence 1 58.
- Jerry Smith — Father. Morty is often dismissive of Jerry, but later supports and records Jerry’s unexpected public movement in the Mr. Smith universe 384.
- Cthulhu — Powerful Great Old One who grants Morty favor after Morty boldly proposes marrying Cthulhu’s twin daughters; their interactions later become unusually familiar 30 36.
- Cthylla and Enke — Cthulhu’s twin daughters. Morty impulsively proposes marriage to both, but the arrangement is interrupted before any confirmed marriage occurs 30.
- Old K — Great Old One who provides Morty’s Magic Potion and form-shaping knowledge, though his failure to explain its effects causes a major conflict 96 98.
- Tzeentch — Part of Morty’s subconscious and one of his key thought-form allies. Their relationship develops from tension into cooperation, loyalty, and strategic partnership 155 162 227.
- Tony Stark — Ally in the Marvel Universe. Tony shares armor blueprints with Morty, enabling Mind Creation-based technological development 242 243.
- Dark Evil Morty — Political rival, manipulator, temporary deputy, and eventual collaborator of convenience. They repeatedly attempt to outmaneuver one another before agreeing that neither will betray the other immediately 554 561 577.
- C-137 Morty — A fellow Morty whom Morty treats more like a friend than a rival, even prioritizing him over pursuing Jessica 311 477.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Transmigration and Rick’s Return
Morty arrives in the Smith family as a transmigrated soul, recognizes the Rick and Morty setting, and fears the return of his nihilistic grandfather. Rick’s sudden reappearance pushes Morty into interdimensional adventures before he is prepared for them 1 3.
Cthulhu World and First Transformation
Morty attempts to resolve Cthulhu-related problems independently, earns Cthulhu’s favor through a reckless marriage proposal, and receives a Magic Potion from Old K. The potion begins his transition from an ordinary human into a form-shaping, soul-capable being 22 30 96 104.
Flymen and Divine Spirit Bureau Conflict
Using soul form, memory reading, and sabotage, Morty terrorizes Flymen fleets without confronting them conventionally. He later uses his followers’ desire for extended life to create a distraction while trapped in the Divine Spirit Bureau with Tzeentch 103 104 161 162.
Marvel Universe Operations
Morty assists S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers against Hydra and the Superhero Asset Management Company. Suit Rick’s Captivity and Resurrection
Suit Rick captures Morty as part of a collection of unique Mortys and attempts to force him through the Phoenix Project. Morty survives later soul-based damage through the creation of a new body, allowing him to move through the Citadel under the cover of his apparent death 398 400 425 427.
Conflict with Rick and Dark Matter Development
After learning that Rick suppressed his divinization and technological ability, Morty openly fights him. He rapidly constructs factories and robots with psychic energy, then begins incorporating dark matter into his weapons and armor 474 475.
Citadel Election and Presidency
Morty campaigns against Steady Morty, C-137 Morty, and Dark Evil Morty by promoting Morty pride and challenging the Citadel’s treatment of Mortys as expendable dependents. After winning the presidency, he collapses from abnormal brain activity, allowing Dark Evil Morty to consolidate power before Morty is forced back into the office as President 550 552 568 577.
