Jiang Shang first appears as an old fisherman at the Wei River outside Xi Qi, fishing for three months with a hookless rod. Though local children dismiss him as a madman, Marquis of the West Ji Chang regularly visits him and ultimately greets him as “Prime Minister,” revealing the esteem in which he is held 76.

He becomes Ji Fa’s adviser at a moment when Ji Fa has resigned himself to an ordinary farmer’s life. Jiang Shang identifies Yin Shou’s rise as an existential threat to Xi Qi, argues that fleeing or seeking support from other lords will fail, and directs Ji Fa toward Chao Ge. His strategy is to exploit the Shang court’s dependence on desire, greed, and self-interest rather than challenge its power directly 76.

In Chao Ge, Jiang Shang guides Ji Fa through political intrigue. He identifies Fei Zhong’s steward Zhou Ji as a vulnerable entry point, exploits the man’s gambling debt and embezzlement, and uses him to secure access to Fei Zhong 79. He later orchestrates pressure against Bi Gan by spreading the belief that the reputedly benevolent minister will open his granaries to refugees, turning Bi Gan’s public image into a weapon 81.

His methods become increasingly ruthless. Jiang Shang advocates altering Bi Gan’s list of court figures into separate versions for Fei Zhong and the Faceless organization, intending to set rival factions against one another 86 87. He also mobilizes merchants oppressed by Fei Zhong, instructing them to provide coarse salt and defective pig iron so that Fei Zhong’s supposedly full granaries become proof of his failure 94.

Although he serves Ji Fa loyally, Jiang Shang is not uncritical. When Ji Fa raids Bi Gan’s residence to save his brother, Jiang Shang warns that the act sacrifices political legitimacy 156. He later cautions that Ji Fa’s ruthless consolidation of power may cost him Bo Yi Kao’s trust and the support of Xi Qi’s lords 160.

Jiang Shang recognizes the Ice Mountain Snow Lotus as the only medicine capable of breaking Di Xin’s poisoning and addiction. He negotiates with Shen Gong Bao for the lotus, inspects the genuine article in Rich Man Villa’s ice cellar, and unsuccessfully attempts to limit the dangerous favor Ji Fa incurs in exchange 162 164 165. After the caravan escort exposes Shen Gong Bao’s trafficking of children, Jiang Shang helps turn the transaction into evidence against him and prepares ground snow lotus for Ji Fa’s Frost Salt scheme 168 170 172.

Later, Jiang Ziya—identified as Jiang Shang, with the courtesy name Ziya—emerges as a Chan Sect disciple forced down from Mount Kunlun by Ji Fa. Appointed Prime Minister of the City of Man, he is tasked with winning the people’s allegiance from Shen Gong Bao’s city within a month 254. Though Primordial Heavenly Venerate secretly orders him to undermine Ji Fa, Jiang Ziya begins to understand the Human Way through the people’s self-directed construction of their city and Ji Fa’s methods of governance 255 257.

He ultimately renounces the Chan Sect, destroys the Yuqing Immortal Light planted in his Nascent Soul, and declares himself an “old soldier of the Human Way.” Ji Fa appoints him sole Prime Minister of the Human Way, later retaining him as sole Prime Minister of the Human Way Divine Court 265 275.
