Background

Marcus was the younger son of Marquis Harlaus and the younger brother of Count Sarik. Although he awakened the Elvin family’s Heroic Bloodline and distinguished himself in wars against Orcs, Harlaus favored Sarik as heir. Marcus refused to seek wealth or land through submission to either of them, instead resolving to build an independent territory and family through eastern expansion. 27

Unlike many nobles, Marcus approached Harrot without aristocratic airs. He had previously rewarded Harrot with a treasured sword for slaying a Troll, then personally recruited him as a Knight and granted him a share of his bloodline power. 27 29

Marcus also backed Harrot’s effort to free Cleon and the elite gladiators from Count Sarik. Using his status and resources, he bought the gladiators from the arena and brought them into his own force before beginning his eastern pioneering campaign. 28 29

Personality

Marcus is ambitious, proud, and deeply unwilling to accept a position beneath those he considers undeserving. His decision to leave his family’s protection and pioneer new land stems from a desire to establish power through his own achievements rather than inherit it from Harlaus. 27

He combines courage with strategic judgment. Marcus repeatedly steps forward against enemies other nobles fear, including the Centaur Commander, yet he also organizes scouts, supply protection, cavalry interceptions, ranged support, and alliances with other races. 31 37 52

Marcus is loyal to those he considers his own. He treated Harrot as a brother, sought the Sun Temple’s aid after Harrot’s death, and cared for Harrot’s retainers and family afterward. 59 61 His devotion to his daughter Annie also tempers his anger during political crises. 75

Despite his ambition, Marcus does not pursue authority for its own sake. After becoming a Legendary Expert, he refuses to replace the king, choosing to respect King Prague’s legacy and pursue personal accomplishment instead. 165

Recruitment and Escape from the Arena

Marcus recruits Harrot as his Knight, shares his bloodline power, and helps free Cleon and the elite gladiators from Count Sarik’s control. He appoints Harrot as Chief Knight and begins assembling a force for eastern expansion. 27 28 30

Eastern Pioneering Campaign

Marcus leads his followers into the Eastern Province despite opposition from Harlaus and other nobles. He investigates marauder activity, protects settlers and supplies, and warns Marquis Prague that the Centaur threat is more serious than the alliance recognizes. 30 31 35

He earns core status in the Pioneering Alliance through his performance against the Centaurs and later obtains Elven support, including Archmage Iltiran. 37 38

Centaur War
