Background

Ye Lingling was introduced to Ling Xuqing by Dugu Bo alongside Dugu Yan, the daughter of Dugu Bo's old friend. She and Dugu Yan witnessed Bi Ji's sacrifice at the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, where Ye Lingling was distressed at the prospect of Bi Ji dying. 42 43

Her original martial soul was the Nine Heart Begonia, a healing martial soul burdened by a hereditary curse: only two successors of the lineage could live at one time, and a predecessor had to die when a new successor awakened. Its soul skills were also restricted to healing alone. 46

After learning that Bi Ji could evolve her martial soul through immortal herbs, Whale Glue, and Emerald Swan origin power, Ye Lingling chose to pledge eternal loyalty to Ling Xuqing. She completed a soul vow, binding her soul to him unless he voluntarily released her. 46 47
