For the sewers beneath Havenlight's outer district, this was destined to be no ordinary day.
Cold mist drifted through the air, corpses littered the ground. Ornately decorated armor, dented and broken apart, lay scattered across the frozen mire. Chunks of ice already floated in the foul water flowing nearby.
And what made this day even more extraordinary was still happening.
On the sewer's brick floor, Benjamin rolled about in agony under the curse, incapable of doing anything else.
Another attempt at "I can turn this around and kill her," and another failure.
Michelle stepped over the Purifiers' corpses and came to Benjamin's side. Looking down at him from above, she showed not the slightest surprise, as though she had expected this scene all along.
"You never intended to help me obtain the Treasure Vault, did you?" she said.
Benjamin wanted to answer, but unfortunately, the pain had long since robbed him of speech.
He regretted thinking he could catch Michelle off guard. He also regretted that, when he had been about to draw his gun, he had hesitated ever so slightly because Michelle had just saved him.
If he had not hesitated, perhaps Michelle would have been the one lying on the ground now.
No matter what, Michelle had just risked her life to save him. Though reason told Benjamin this was the best chance to escape Michelle's control, and that Michelle had saved him only for the Treasure Vault, he still could not pull the trigger without hesitation.
Still, on second thought, Michelle had been prepared all along. Even if Benjamin had acted without any hesitation, he probably would not have succeeded.
