Childhood and the Church

Michelle witnessed her uncle—later the Bishop of St. Peter's Cathedral—strangle her mother to death when she was five. Her father later died after falling into alcoholism, leaving Michelle orphaned. The Bishop took her to the Royal Capital, supported her knight training, and eventually secured her place among the Paladins 130.

Women were ordinarily forbidden from becoming Paladins. Michelle nevertheless entered the order under the name Christine, swearing loyalty in the Cathedral while privately despising the Church and its invocation of “God's will” to excuse cruelty 95 130.

She became a mage only after joining the Paladins, allowing her to infiltrate the Church for years without her identity being discovered 61.

Annie, Sally, and the Treasure Vault

Michelle met Annie in a motel, killed one of Annie's clients, and offered her a way out: “Follow me, and you will become a mage.” Annie thereafter regarded Michelle as her rescuer, teacher, and near-divine source of support 7.

Michelle and Annie survived together in Havenlight's outer district and spoke sincerely of creating a kingdom where mages could live free from Church control 2. Their relationship deteriorated after Sally joined them. Michelle suspected Annie after Sally's death, while Annie's jealousy and fear of losing Michelle ultimately led her to betray her 7.

While seeking the Riser Family Treasure Vault, Michelle abducted Benjamin Riser after mistaking him for Grant Riser. She was willing to use Annie as bait against their pursuers and bound Benjamin with magic to keep him under control 5 8. Annie died before she could complete her betrayal 7.

Alliance with Benjamin

Michelle repeatedly cursed, threatened, and manipulated Benjamin to force his cooperation in opening the vault. She also gave him a mage's Bible containing magical theory and entry-level spells, expecting his talent to make him useful to her plans 22 29.

Despite their hostility, Michelle disguised herself as the Paladin Christine and coordinated an ambush with Benjamin against the Purifiers. Together, they killed several Purifiers and destroyed the God's Eye 57.

She later removed Benjamin's curse and returned the ginkgo leaf used to maintain it, formally proposing an alliance to retrieve the vault's contents 60. The vault ultimately contained a map leading to the legacy of the mage known as Soul Flame 95.

Revolutionary Ambition

Michelle's opposition to the Church extended beyond personal revenge. She intended to provoke a conflict between the Church and Silent Academy, believing that the isolated mage organization had to be forced into resisting persecution 61.

Her stated goal was to make mages reclaim their place in the world by overthrowing the Church's dominance. She was prepared to sacrifice allies, enemies, and herself toward that end 61 129.

Death and Final Revenge

Michelle reached Soul Flame's legacy but died after touching a red crystal whose power overwhelmed her. Her spilled blood condensed into an undead entity, allowing her obsession and hatred to persist after death 145.

As an undead remnant, she returned to the Royal Capital, created a blood curse disguised as a plague, and used the chaos to help Benjamin escape the Church's lockdown 123 129. She later confronted the Bishop, revealed that she had always known he murdered her mother, and allowed her body to collapse into foul blood 130.

Her final curse killed every person infected by the plague—more than thirty thousand people—before her form disintegrated 130. Benjamin later found and buried her mummified physical corpse in the legacy cavern 145.
