Background / History

Eight Extremes Gate and founding the school

Huo Shan spent decades in the Prefecture City and belonged to the Eight Extremes Gate’s outer ranks. He left the sect after failing to reach the fourth realm before age forty. During his sect years, a dispute with his junior brother Du Feiyang brought severe punishment on both men; Du nearly had his martial arts crippled and continued to blame Huo Shan afterward 30 82.

After establishing his school in Big Stone County, Huo Shan visited the local powers and demonstrated his abilities. His Transformation Force cultivation made gangs reluctant to provoke his disciples. Among the county’s school masters, he had suffered only a slight setback against School Master Chen of the Heaven Gathering Martial Arts School; the other masters were considered weaker than him 38 82.

Choosing and training disciples

Huo Shan initially distributed his attention according to root-bone aptitude. When he examined Zhao Feng, Wu Tiezhu, and Chu Fan, the first two possessed fifth-grade root bones, while Chu Fan’s rare second-grade root bone earned immediate formal discipleship and personal instruction. Zhao and Wu were placed under Wei Yuan’s guidance 11.

Zhao’s Bright Strength breakthrough earned him registered-disciple status, Vitality Powder, and advanced stance instruction. Although Huo Shan came to admire his perseverance, he still believed Zhao’s poor root bone would limit his future and reserved the school’s main investment for Chu Fan 13 29 30.

Zhao’s first-attempt Hidden Force breakthrough changed that assessment. Huo Shan recognized his exceptional comprehension, accepted him as his sixth inner disciple, and began teaching him much more meticulously. He also supplied two Solid Foundation Pills and encouraged him to prepare for the Martial Examination 34 35.

Martial Examination and Chu Fan’s estrangement

Huo Shan prepared his disciples through detailed analysis of their opponents. The school’s first Martial Examination produced three contestants in the top thirty-two: Shi Mao, Chu Fan, and Zhao Feng. For Zhao’s match against Zhu Mingshou, Huo Shan taught Lifting-Character Force earlier than planned and adapted his advice to Zhao’s supplementary movement technique 49 53 54 55.

Chu Fan’s ties to the Zhu Family later brought militia inspections and political pressure onto the school. Huo Shan removed the county magistrate’s “Famous Master, Outstanding Disciple” plaque to reduce the danger, provoking Chu Fan’s anger and withdrawal. As other senior disciples became less involved, Huo Shan relied increasingly on Shi Mao and Zhao to keep the school functioning 66 73.

The news that Chu Fan’s dantian had cracked distressed Huo Shan so severely that he nearly collapsed. Their remaining bond nevertheless ended when Chu Fan insulted him: Huo Shan expelled him and refused his mother’s pleas for reinstatement 76 82.

Du Feiyang’s challenge

Du Feiyang announced that his new school would be Big Stone County’s only Eight Extremes Fist school. Huo Shan refused to seek mediation, expecting his former junior brother to challenge both him and his disciples. Privately, he prepared for the possibility of losing the school and considered how to secure his students’ livelihoods afterward 82 83.

At the Heroes’ Gathering, the masters agreed to settle their dispute through successive disciple bouts. Shi Mao was badly injured by Du’s disciple Yan Luo, after which Zhao stepped forward. When Du subsequently ambushed Zhao, Huo Shan immediately attacked him; with Du already disrupted by his own redirected punch, Huo Shan drove him back and injured him 87 88 90.

Zhao’s revealed Transformation Force cultivation left Huo Shan proud and relieved. Zhao continued to acknowledge him as his master, and Huo Shan responded by teaching the Transformation Force methods of their lineage and the Six Harmonies Great Spear 90 91.

Supporting Zhao’s departure

Huo Shan hoped Zhao would marry Huo Yao and eventually become someone to whom he could entrust both his daughter and the school. Neither young martial artist wished to settle down: Zhao prioritized cultivation, while Huo Yao admired him without romantic feelings and pursued her own martial ambitions 66 67 94.

Despite his concerns about Zhao’s aptitude, Huo Shan helped him prepare for the Eight Extremes Gate’s Inner Gate Examination. He explained the importance of gifts and connections, provided a recommendation letter for Yin Elder, and directed Zhao to Huo Yao at the sect. At their farewell, he assured Zhao that he could return if the road ahead became too difficult 100 101.

Cult influence and Chu Fan’s death

After Chu Fan’s expulsion and Zhao’s departure, Huo Shan lost much of his former drive. The school later struggled financially as the Red Lotus Sect attracted people away from martial training with promises of protection, healing, and immortality. Huo Shan planned to move the school into the Inner City for safety 156 192 193.

Following Chu Fan’s death, Huo Shan declined to view his body but ordered a burial and financial assistance for his mother. He was relieved that the earlier public expulsion had separated the school from Chu Fan’s crimes, and thanked Zhao for repeatedly resolving its troubles 205.

Defense of Big Stone County

During the rebel siege, Huo Shan insisted on fighting beside Zhao rather than remaining at the school. Learning that Zhao had reached Astral Force finally convinced him that his disciple could not be judged by ordinary standards. On the walls, he used the Six Harmonies Great Spear against a rebel Transformation Force fighter; Zhao judged that his master had maintained his skills and could handle the opponent 266.

After the battle, Huo Shan declined Zhao’s offer to relocate the school to the provincial capital. He was accustomed to Big Stone County and believed a Transformation Force practitioner would struggle to earn a living among the capital’s stronger martial artists. Worried about Huo Yao amid the fighting in the Prefecture City, he asked Zhao for news but explicitly urged him not to risk himself solely for her sake. Zhao later sent word that she was injured but safe 268 271.

Appearance

Huo Shan has a large frame but moves lightly enough to leap onto a single Plum Blossom Stake. For the Heroes’ Gathering, he wears a fitted martial outfit with coiled-dragon clasps and appears vigorous, with surging qi and blood 9 86.

Personality

Huo Shan is demanding about discipline and deeply invested in his school’s reputation. His early favoritism toward Chu Fan reflects both conventional faith in superior root bone and a personal ambition to train a Great Grandmaster whose achievements would preserve his own name. That favoritism sometimes leads him to overlook Chu Fan’s behavior 30 33 37.

His care becomes increasingly evident as he recognizes Zhao’s comprehension and loyalty. He gives hands-on instruction, spends valuable medicine on his disciple, and considers using old connections to secure Zhao’s future if the school loses its standing. His pessimism about poor aptitude persists even after repeated surprises, shaped by his own stalled career and the gifted cultivators he witnessed in the sect 34 35 66 83.

Huo Shan’s wish for Zhao and Huo Yao to settle down comes from affection as well as regret. He sees his younger, single-mindedly ambitious self in both of them and fears the dangers of the martial path.
