Background / History

Su Qingwan belongs to the Pure Moon Convent, a reclusive righteous sect devoted to protecting ordinary people. Its disciples had remained outside worldly affairs for more than two centuries before its return. At twenty, Qingwan was already feared by Northern Barbarian operatives for her swordsmanship 198.

The convent’s standing also protects her from ordinary political pressure. Emperor Taizu declared himself its Mortal Disciple and bestowed honors and a Golden Token upon it; Qingzhou officials consequently receive Qingwan with marked deference 233. The convent forbids romantic relationships with men, making her growing attachment to Zhao Feng a conflict with her religious obligations 369.

Appearance

  • Clothing: Usually wears white or moon-white robes, including a long dress embroidered with drifting-cloud patterns 233 382.
  • Hair and complexion: Black hair secured with a jade hairpin, loose strands beside her cheeks, and luminous, jade-white skin 233.
  • Bearing: Slender, graceful, and composed, with light steps repeatedly compared to movement through clouds 233 382.
  • Conspicuous beauty: Attracts attention even behind a veil, making her natural appearance unsuitable for covert investigation 198.
  • Later appearance: Noticeably thinner when she returns at the Hidden Sect Grand Assembly 382.

Personality

Qingwan is compassionate, but her commitment to protecting people does not make her passive. She serves porridge to refugees, helps oppose demonic schemes, and agrees to accompany Zhao Feng’s army when he frames the campaign around civilian suffering. Nevertheless, she distinguishes humanitarian duty from participation in court politics or war 198 302.

She questions the moral cost of Zhao Feng’s ruthless methods rather than simply accepting them. After the River God Festival operation, she reflects on the difficulty of maintaining her sect’s principles while confronting enemies who endanger innocent lives 205.

Her reserve softens around Zhao. She teases him about neglecting his “bodyguard,” enjoys his storytelling, and deliberately uses their familiarity to discourage unwanted advances from Murong Fu 306 307 320. She also sets explicit boundaries: she rebuffs overly familiar forms of address and warns Zhao against further improper behavior after their intimate farewell 320 349.

Her attachment eventually outweighs her efforts to remain emotionally distant. She risks cold poisoning to obtain medicine for Zhao, later admits that she loves him, and insists that any reckoning with her convent must not dishonor its members 395 398.
