Background & History

Xiao Yan was once a Xiao Clan genius, but his cultivation regressed until he was left at the third stage of Dou Qi and became the target of ridicule. His mother’s ring had been absorbing the Dou Qi he cultivated; after Chen Qiye told him to remove it during cultivation, his talent returned. Xiao Yan then accepted Chen Qiye as his master. 1 2

When Nalan Yanran arrived to annul their engagement, Xiao Yan accepted Chen Qiye’s proposed half-year challenge at the Misty Cloud Sect. He swore to defeat Nalan Yanran and cast her aside, choosing to place complete trust in his master despite the vast gap between their cultivation levels. 7 8

Chen Qiye gave Xiao Yan a Beginner Experience Pill, restoring him to one-star Dou Practitioner, then taught him the first palm of a nameless combat art that Xiao Yan named the Dragon Subduing Eighteen Palms. Chen Qiye refused to force rapid growth at the expense of Xiao Yan’s foundation, instead setting the much greater goal of becoming a Dou Emperor. 8 9

During the crisis involving Mu She and the Wolf Head Mercenary Group, Xiao Yan learned that strength also carried responsibility. Chen Qiye pushed him to face Mu She as the Xiao Clan patriarch’s son, telling him that a true powerhouse needed the heart of one. 11 Chen Qiye later explained that he would not kill every enemy for Xiao Yan, because Xiao Yan ultimately had to confront and defeat his own opponents. 13

After Chen Qiye temporarily left the Dou Qi Continent, the Ancient Clan took Xiao Yan away in exchange for the Heaven-tier Dou Technique and information about Chen Qiye. Xiao Yan agreed so that Xiao Yi Xian would not be burdened, but endured more than five months of provocation, battle, oppression, and uncertainty over his missing father. 85 89 99

He returned to fulfill the half-year agreement at the Misty Cloud Sect. During the duel, he broke through to seven-star Dou Shi, defeated Nalan Yanran despite her higher cultivation and secret techniques, and ended their engagement without killing her. 102 103 104

After the destruction of the Ancient Clan, Xiao Yan blamed his own weakness for the disasters surrounding him rather than blaming Chen Qiye. Chen Qiye then offered him a choice between a cultivation technique and a drop of essence blood; Xiao Yan chose the blood, which transformed his physique and bloodline with Ancestral Dragon power. 109

In later eras, Xiao Yan became the Dragon Emperor, an object of faith across the Great Thousand World. He led the God War against the Dark Star Realm, possessed strength capable of crushing experts far above his stated realm, and was recognized as Chen Qiye’s eldest disciple. 204 305 313 318

Appearance

Xiao Yan is initially depicted as a young man with black eyes and dark clothing. As the Dragon Emperor, he commonly wears black robes and carries a cold, imposing presence. 89 299

  • During the Ancestral Dragon bloodline transformation, his hair turns crimson and his pupils shine like rubies. 109
  • Ancient, dragon-scale-like runes appear over his skin while the bloodline is active. 109
  • His Flame Dragon Transformation produces crimson hair, scarlet eyes, and dense divine runes resembling dragon scales. 317

Personality

Xiao Yan is stubborn, proud, and intensely driven by humiliation and hardship. After Nalan Yanran’s annulment, he refuses to accept being looked down upon and stakes his future on defeating her within half a year. 7 9

He values responsibility toward his family and clan. When the Xiao Clan faces danger, he offers to confront Yun Tianbing himself rather than allow others to bear the consequences of his actions. 24 His time in the Ancient Clan hardens him further, leaving him more resilient, cold, and ruthless, though he remains deeply affected by his father’s disappearance and by his complicated bond with Gu Xun’er. 89 99 109

Despite his ruthlessness in battle, Xiao Yan distinguishes victory from cruelty. After defeating Nalan Yanran, he does not strike a final blow, choosing instead to end their engagement and settle their grievance. 104

Abilities & Skills

Dragon Subduing Eighteen Palms

A powerful palm art taught by Chen Qiye and named by Xiao Yan. It possesses eighteen total palms, though Xiao Yan is initially restricted to its first techniques because of his insufficient Dou Qi. 9

  • Flying Dragon in the Heavens — Releases dragon-shaped Dou Qi externally, allowing a Dou Shi to unleash power normally beyond that realm. 102
  • Dragon Appears in the Field — A palm technique whose power Xiao Yan learns to draw back into his own body, creating a defensive effect mistaken for Dou Qi Armor. 103
  • Reverse Dragon — A self-developed move used to counter Nalan Yanran’s ultimate attack. 103
  • He masters the first three palms during his training and later adapts their principles into a combat path of his own. 32 98 103

Close-Quarters Combat

Xiao Yan is an aggressive hand-to-hand fighter who combines rapid strikes, kicks, movement techniques, and insights taken from past opponents.

  • Defeats Gu Lanfeng, a nine-star Dou Master, with his fists rather than a Dou Technique. 90 91
  • Uses bare-handed attacks, leaps, and accumulated momentum to pressure Nalan Yanran despite her weapon and superior realm. 102
  • Displays a ruthless battle instinct noted by veterans such as Jia Xing Tian and Fa Ma. 104

Ancestral Dragon Bloodline

Chen Qiye’s essence blood remakes Xiao Yan’s physique and grants him an extraordinarily powerful dragon bloodline. 109

  • The transformed blood produces terrifying vitality and an aura comparable to a quasi-Saint. 109
  • Xiao Yan later sheds the original Ancestral Dragon essence blood but retains and evolves the combat form he comprehended from it. 317 318
  • His bloodline power is valuable enough that later enemies use remnants of it to empower the Dragon-Phoenix Mirror and dragon-based attacks. 215

Flame Dragon Transformation

A battle form evolved by Xiao Yan from his understanding of the Ancestral Dragon bloodline. 317 318

  • Allows him to wield power beyond what his Reincarnation Realm body can normally sustain. 318
  • Dramatically raises his combat power, letting him defeat Oscar with a single punch after manifesting the form. 318
  • Its recovery period is approximately three hours, leaving him vulnerable to exploitation afterward. 319

Great Dao Will and World Wills

As the Dragon Emperor, Xiao Yan commands immense will-based power.

  • Possesses more than one thousand strands of Great Dao will. 318
  • Has used the wills of nine hundred and ninety-nine worlds to reinforce his attacks. 317
  • Can manifest three thousand beams of divine light, each described as capable of rivaling supreme-law power. 316
  • Suppresses eight Heavenly Emperor Realm experts with a single palm after breaking their combined law formation. 315

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Mother’s ring — Originally absorbs Xiao Yan’s cultivated Dou Qi; it is connected to Yao Chen’s soul. Xiao Yan later gives it to Xiao Yi Xian when he is taken by the Ancient Clan. 2 85
  • Sealing Pearl — Given to him by Chen Qiye; contains the Sword-Drawing Form of the Heavenly Sword Art. 112
