Background / History
Family poison and conflict with Spirit Hall
The Jade Phosphorous Serpent lineage’s poison continuously corrodes its users’ bodies, with backlash worsening as cultivation increases. Both Dugu Bo’s father and son died from it. Dugu Bo endured it for most of his life and periodically stayed at the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Eyes to suppress his symptoms using the valley’s extreme environment 62 63.
After receiving his Titled Douluo title at Spirit Hall, he rejected Bibi Dong’s recruitment offer because he disliked being constrained. Bibi Dong subsequently ordered Chrysanthemum Douluo and Ghost Douluo to hunt him down. Prince Xue Xing rescued him with the Heaven Dou Empire’s army, leaving Dugu Bo deeply distrustful of Spirit Hall 63 81.
He initially concealed the hereditary poison problem from Dugu Yan, hoping to spare her its psychological burden while he searched for a cure. When her poison first erupted after obtaining her third Soul Ring, his intervention suppressed it but left her meridians badly damaged 63.
Treatment and the medicinal garden
Upon returning home, Dugu Bo discovered that Dugu Yan’s latest poison outbreak had been suppressed more effectively by an Ice Heart Pill than by his own earlier treatment. He sought out Ye Renxin and learned that Zhao Ming had refined the pill. Despite Zhao Ming’s apparent connection to Ling Yuan Douluo, Dugu Bo agreed to cooperate when the boy promised a complete cure for his granddaughter 63.
He brought Zhao Ming and Ling Yuan to his medicinal garden at the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Eyes, offering unrestricted access to its herbs if Dugu Yan could be cured. Before admitting them, he tested Zhao Ming by withholding an antidote to the outer poisonous miasma; Zhao Ming and Ling Yuan passed safely using Ice Heart Pills 64.
Zhao Ming supplied him with two Ice-Fire Divine Pills, one Soul Core Pill, and one Dragon Transformation Pill, leaving the choice of treatment to him. In gratitude, Dugu Bo gave Zhao Ming the entire garden, asking only to retain a roughly half-mu plot for poisonous herbs 65.
Soul-hunting expedition
After Dugu Yan’s Martial Soul evolved, Dugu Bo invited Zhao Ming to name it. Zhao Ming chose Jade Phosphorous Poison Dragon. Dugu Bo then organized a joint expedition with the Ye family to obtain Soul Rings for Dugu Yan, Ye Lingling, Zhao Ming, and Ye Renxin 72.
He subdued an approximately 8,000-year Silver Armored Flying Dragon for Dugu Yan and guarded her during absorption. He also helped identify suitable beasts for Ye Lingling and gave her the right-arm Soul Bone obtained from the Sacred Sun Tree 73.
During the encounter with the sixty-thousand-year Golden Flying Dragon, Dugu Bo escorted the others away before returning to protect Zhao Ming. His poison failed against the dragon’s scales, and a single claw strike nearly shattered his Martial Soul Avatar. He remained nearby despite serious injuries, watching Di Tian warily until Zhao Ming was safe 75 76.
Following Ye Renxin’s acquisition of Life Rebirth, the two elders formally allied their clans. Dugu Bo’s wide-area poison and Ye Renxin’s wide-area healing provided complementary offensive and defensive strengths. Ye Renxin healed his expedition injuries before their return to Heaven Dou City 78 79.
Founding Pill Tower
Dugu Bo initially hesitated over Zhao Ming’s proposed pill business because of its Spirit Hall connections. He accepted after Zhao Ming distinguished Worship Hall and the Angel Lineage from Bibi Dong’s Pope Palace, and Ye Renxin vouched for Qian Daoliu’s character 82.
The Dugu Clan became one of Pill Tower’s five founding powers, holding a permanent councilor seat with veto power. Under the business agreement, the Dugu and Ye Clans jointly received 30% of profits for sales and operations 81 82.
At Pill Tower’s public announcement, Dugu Bo declared that the organization’s affairs and enemies would also be the Dugu Clan’s. He displayed his nine Soul Rings and Rank 93 pressure to reinforce that commitment 83.
Alchemy and the battle with Tang Hao
Dugu Yan taught him Zhao Ming’s method of condensing Pill Fire. What began as curiosity became an obsession with refining poisonous herbs, insects, and venom into specialized pills. During these experiments, he advanced to Rank 95 94.
Zhao Ming persuaded him to visit Notting City by revealing that a transformed hundred-thousand-year Soul Beast lived there. Dugu Bo recognized Xiao Wu’s aura, provoking Tang Hao’s intervention. After detecting Tang Hao’s longstanding internal injuries, he accepted a duel outside the city to avoid endangering Zhao Ming and causing a civilian massacre 95 96.
His Poison Soul Core allowed him to sustain repeated high-level Soul Skills and keep Tang Hao on the defensive. He later celebrated the result as proof that he was stronger than Qian Xunji, although Zhao Ming privately recognized that Tang Hao’s injuries and refusal to use Ring Detonation made the comparison unreliable. Dugu Bo recovered from minor injuries and physical strain after two days 99.
Appearance
Dugu Bo is an elderly man commonly seen in a dark green robe. By the Notting City journey, his loose black hair and ordinary bearing allow him to pass as a wealthy old man 94 95.
- Hair: Still dark green when Zhao Ming first notices his post-treatment improvement; described as black in later appearances 72 94.
- Eyes: Cloudy but capable of an intensely sharp gaze. Before treatment, a jade-green tint in the whites reveals poison embedded deep in his bones 63 95.
- Poisonous presence: A faint fishy-sweet scent accompanies his public display of power at Pill Tower’s launch 83.
Personality
Dugu Bo is proud, stubborn, and resistant to outside control. He distrusts Spirit Hall because of his past persecution, but he can reconsider old grievances when given a clear distinction between hostile and trustworthy factions 63 81 82.
His devotion to Dugu Yan overrides his pride. He is willing to surrender his medicinal garden to secure her future, and later saves Zhao Ming’s extraordinary Soul Bone gift for her rather than using it himself 65 99.
He repays life-changing favors with fierce loyalty. After Zhao Ming resolves the Dugu Clan’s poison problem, Dugu Bo vows to defend him to the death and repeatedly acts as his protector 73 75.
His eccentricity becomes especially apparent in alchemy: he tastes dangerous poison pills himself and enthusiastically offers one to Zhao Ming. He also enjoys boasting about victories. Nevertheless, he exercises restraint by containing his garden’s miasma and agreeing to move his duel away from Notting City’s residents 64 94 96 99.
Abilities & Skills
