Nature and Awakening

A Martial Soul is awakened during a pivotal rite that can determine a person's future. Access to awakening is unequal: some commoners cannot afford it, while certain nobles demand binding conditions in return for performing it. 30

Once manifested, a Martial Soul determines much of a Soul Master's fighting style. It may be possessed by its wielder, summoned as a weapon or object, or—rarely—exist independently as a detached companion. 2 8 9

A Martial Soul's nature can also change or develop after its initial awakening. Huo Yuhao gains the Ice Jade Scorpion as a second Martial Soul, Bei Bei's bloodline has the potential to awaken into a Bright Sacred Dragon, and Tang Ya's Blue Silver Grass mutates into a black, devouring-type Martial Soul. Such changes can bring power alongside serious risks: Ma Xiaotao's Evil Fire Phoenix corrupts her mind when its inherent Evil Fire escapes control. 34 42 66 73 79

Soul Rings and Development

Soul Rings are integrated into a Martial Soul to gain Soul Skills and raise a Soul Master's capabilities. Their selection is treated as a major cultivation decision, since a Soul Beast's traits can shape a Martial Soul's future development. 10 12

Martial Soul Possession activates the Martial Soul directly through the wielder's body and Soul Power. Beast Martial Souls may visibly transform their user, while Jiang Bai's Ultimate Ice possession changes his hair to pink and eyes to emerald green. 8 25
