History
During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Hidden Leaf forces pursued Uchiha Xuan and guarded the ruined Uchiha shrine at the Naka River. Xuan breached its barriers, planted a spiritually marked scroll intended to turn whoever deciphered it into his unwitting informant, and escaped through underground waterways 7 9. The village later designated the former shrine site an S-rank forbidden zone under Anbu surveillance. Beneath it, Xuan found the remains of Uchiha clan members secretly executed by Root and encountered an afterimage of Danzō Shimura 37 38.
The village’s forces repeatedly confronted Xuan. Hidden Leaf and Hidden Sand shinobi jointly sought a core he held, while a Leaf team led by Morikawa Raion attacked his group during a Four-Tails jinchūriki escort; Chiyo Saori killed Raion 15 34. Hidden Leaf intelligence also received evidence Xuan had planted to implicate Uchiha remnants in an attack on Gaara 59. Later, Leaf and Cloud secretly discussed a joint investigation of the “Black Mist Invader,” and a Hidden Leaf think tank advocated hunting Xuan 72 86.
After Xuan’s clash with Madara, hardliners led by Sixth Hokage Kakashi called for the Leaf’s remaining soldiers to encircle him, but Hidden Cloud and Hidden Stone representatives refused 91. Sasuke Uchiha subsequently led a Leaf squad in pursuit of Xuan to the Naka River Shrine, where Xuan established the Crimson Eye Divine Realm 98. Xuan then projected a proclamation over Hokage Rock announcing the Sixth Shinobi World War 99.
As Xuan consolidated power, seventeen Fire Country border villages petitioned to leave the Hidden Leaf tax system, citing longstanding debts 116. He also ordered Saori to burn Leaf clan shrines, a cemetery, and an ancestral hall and bring him their tablets 138. In the later Empire, the Hidden Leaf Village lay in ruins. Former Leaf shinobi still living under Xuan’s rule were drawn back toward the restricted site by memories of Sakura Haruno 189 190.
