The group's journey would take roughly ten days. During that time, Rod could save up a full twenty thousand units of gold, along with a little ore and lumber each day.
Along the way, Uther began teaching Rod the way of the Holy Light and instructing him in several Holy Light spells. Rod, meanwhile, took out his magical spellbook and began recording everything Uther taught him.
Every day, Uther taught Rod a new Holy Light spell. In truth, Rod could use a spell as long as he copied it into his spellbook, but in order not to seem too strange, he still earnestly discussed the way of the Holy Light with Uther. These so-called discussions were really just the two of them feeding each other inspirational platitudes.
For Rod, who had spent years navigating the workplace, this was child's play! Wasn't it just selling dreams, talking about justice, and strengthening one's faith?
During this time, Rod learned Blessing of Wisdom, Blessing of Kings, Holy Light, Divine Shield, and Divine Storm from Uther.
These spells were all quite good. Blessing of Wisdom and Blessing of Kings could grant himself beneficial effects, while Holy Light was somewhat more effective than Flash of Light.
Divine Shield was a defensive skill that could be used together with Arcane Shield. Before battle, he could cast both protective spells on himself and hide inside a turtle shell.
Divine Storm, meanwhile, was a purely offensive spell that could attack every enemy around him. It was extremely practical.
After discussing matters with Uther for two hours, Rod stated that he had already understood the principles of Divine Storm. Then he rose to his feet as a burst of golden light flashed across his body. A spiraling storm of Holy Light began revolving around Rod, and the Paladin offensive technique, Divine Storm, was successfully cast.
Seeing the Divine Storm Rod had cast, Uther was astonished. He learned one spell a day and could understand and cast it immediately—this boy was a natural-born Paladin!
This talent was far greater than Arthas's. Arthas had studied under him for so long, yet had only learned Divine Shield, Flash of Light, and Holy Light.
Rod's talent for the Holy Light surpassed Arthas's by several floors, stirring Uther's desire to nurture such talent.
However, before that, Uther intended to test Rod. Through the past few days of teaching, he had realized that Rod was capable of learning far more than just one Holy Light spell per day.
Uther had a feeling that it seemed he only needed to explain a spell's principles in detail for Rod to understand it. Their subsequent discussions had merely been explorations of the way of the Holy Light, not discussions of the spells themselves.
"Rod, we have plenty of time today. Let me teach you a few more holy spells!" Uther decided to test his guess.
"Sure! Lord Uther, I'm quite interested in Holy Light spells." Having finished casting Divine Storm, Rod immediately sat down.
"The next spell I'll teach you is called Blessing of Might. It can be cast on yourself or others, and it can increase the target's strength.
"There is also Holy Shock. This one is rather special—it is the most powerful healing spell among Holy Light spells.
"Besides that, there is a skill called Consecration. It infuses the ground beneath your feet with Holy Light energy, creating an area of Holy Light that can protect your allies and attack the undead." This time, Uther planned to teach three Holy Light spells at once and see whether Rod could learn them.
In just a few dozen minutes, Uther had roughly explained how to use all three spells.
The three spells also automatically appeared in Rod's spellbook, successfully copied into it.
"I think I've roughly grasped the principles behind these three spells, Lord Uther. First is Blessing of Might." Rod stood up, raised his hand, and cast Blessing of Might on Uther.
Disbelief flashed through Uther's eyes. It really was this boy's first time casting it, and he had mastered it instantly.
Next, Rod cast Holy Shock and Consecration in succession. The ground beneath his feet shone with golden light, while a layer of Holy Light enveloped his body, leaving the Paladins and ordinary soldiers present utterly dumbfounded.
"How was that, Lord Uther? Please point out any problems with my spells." Rod spoke very humbly.
He now had a bonus of 3 Strength, so the Holy Light spells he used were quite powerful.
After seeing Rod learn three Holy Light spells so quickly, Uther finally confirmed the answer in his heart.
"Truly admirable, Rod. Your talent for the Holy Light is like a gift bestowed by the Holy Light itself.
"The Holy Light has favored you. You are one favored by the Holy Light.
"You should join the Knights of the Silver Hand and become a great Paladin, spreading the way of the Holy Light." This time, Uther earnestly invited Rod. Such talent for the Holy Light should not be buried. The Knights of the Silver Hand were where this Mr. Rod belonged.
The Holy Light spells Rod had just cast were even more powerful than those cast by some full-fledged Paladins.
"Cough, cough! Lord Uther, I'm deeply honored by your invitation, but for now, I still want to travel around. Besides, I won't give up the path of the mage." Rod declined tactfully.
Are you kidding? If I join the Knights of the Silver Hand, how am I supposed to go to Kalimdor? I don't want to stay here and fight the Scourge and the Burning Legion to the death.
"This is the will of the Holy Light, and also its blessing.
"Rod, it was the Holy Light that guided me to meet you and teach you Holy Light spells. You may not know this, child, but in five days, you have traveled a path that other Paladins may never finish in their entire lives," Uther said.
The Paladin class had only existed for a little over a decade, but many spells and special skills had already been developed. Yet no Paladin had ever learned eight Holy Light spells within five days.
This young man named Rod possessed a terrifyingly strong understanding of Holy Light spells and an equally profound grasp of the way of the Holy Light. Even when speaking with him, some of Rod's words about justice moved Uther deeply. (To put it plainly, they were modern-day inspirational platitudes.)
"Our journey still has a few days left, Lord Uther. Perhaps after I have toured the royal city of Lordaeron and returned from Dalaran, I will give you an answer." With things having reached this point, Rod truly could not bring himself to refuse directly, so he gave an ambiguous answer.
I'll mooch off your Paladin spells first. By the time I leave Dalaran, I might already be heading for Kalimdor.
"Then it's settled, Rod. I believe in the guidance of the Holy Light. You will certainly return to the way of the Holy Light," Uther said.
Rod nodded at this and said nothing more.
