Background / History
Investigation of the Undead Plague
Arthas investigates the undead activity around the East Weald and Andorhal alongside Jaina Proudmoore. He leads Lordaeron soldiers against ghouls and an abomination, healing wounded troops with the Holy Light before Rod unexpectedly destroys the abomination from afar. 6
After learning that plague-tainted grain has transformed villagers into undead, Arthas hires Rod as a mercenary in the name of the Lordaeron royal family. Rod’s use of Holy Light reassures Arthas, who initially treats him as a trustworthy ally. 7 8
When Kel'Thuzad is identified as a former member of Dalaran’s Council of Six, Arthas refuses Jaina’s proposal to involve Dalaran. He insists that the necromancer’s crimes against Lordaeron must be dealt with personally. 9
Andorhal and Kel'Thuzad
At Andorhal, Arthas organizes a temporary camp, leads the assault on Cult of the Damned forces, and confronts Kel'Thuzad at a plague-contaminated barn. Kel'Thuzad reveals that the Scourge serves the dreadlord Mal'Ganis and that the infected grain has already been sent toward Hearthglen and Stratholme. 12 14
The news of Stratholme overwhelms Arthas. In a burst of fear and rage, he brutally kills the already-defeated Kel'Thuzad with his warhammer. He then orders the body burned and its ashes scattered when Rod warns that necromancy may allow the cultist’s revival; a Crypt Fiend steals the remains before this can be completed. 14 15
Defense of Hearthglen
Arthas arrives at Hearthglen with Rod and Jaina, finds that contaminated grain has already been distributed, and orders the destruction of townspeople after they begin transforming into undead. 17
He commands the city’s defense through repeated undead assaults, personally holding the front line with Lordaeron’s elite soldiers while relying on Rod’s magic to eliminate abominations and support the defenders. He entrusts Rod with Hearthglen’s defense while leading an elite force against the lich Kalis. 18 19 20
Uther and the Knights of the Silver Hand eventually reinforce Hearthglen. Arthas interprets Uther’s stern response to the defense as criticism rather than praise, deepening his resentment and fixation on personally killing Mal'Ganis. 22 23
Stratholme and Departure to Northrend
Medivh warns Arthas to abandon Lordaeron and lead his people to Kalimdor, but Arthas refuses, declaring that defending his homeland is his duty. 24
At Stratholme, Arthas discovers that the plague grain has been distributed throughout the city. Convinced that its population will inevitably become an undead army, he orders the city purged. When Uther refuses, Arthas declares him a traitor and strips him of his Silver Hand positions. 25
Rod, Jaina, and Uther refuse to participate and leave him. Arthas rejects Rod’s claim of friendship, stating that true friends would support his decisions. 26
The purge continues for three days, killing infected and uninfected citizens alike. Mal'Ganis taunts Arthas during the massacre and draws him into a final confrontation in Northrend; Arthas immediately sails north with tens of thousands of Lordaeron soldiers and part of the dwarf army. 27

He possesses considerable pride and a strong need to prove himself. Arthas refuses outside intervention against Kel'Thuzad, reacts poorly to Uther’s restrained praise after Hearthglen’s defense, and becomes increasingly hostile toward advice that challenges his decisions. 9 23 25
The escalating plague erodes his restraint. Fear for Stratholme drives him to kill Kel'Thuzad savagely, while his certainty that the city cannot be saved leads him to break with Uther, Jaina, and Rod rather than abandon the purge. 14 25 26
