Background / History

Uther was one of the first generation of human paladins. Before becoming a paladin, he served as an Alliance priest; the Holy Light transformed him from a frail priest into a knight. He is regarded as the strongest paladin in the Alliance, excelling in both martial skill and command of the Holy Light 23 38.

He became Arthas Menethil's mentor after King Terenas directed Arthas toward paladin training. Arthas retained a warrior-oriented fighting style, while Uther served as the prince's stern instructor in the ways of the Holy Light 12 23.

Uther led the Knights of the Silver Hand to Hearthglen during its siege by the undead. His arrival broke the encirclement: his Holy Light purified surrounding undead, while the combined paladins healed the defenders' wounds and exhaustion before wiping out the besieging army 22 23.

At Stratholme, Uther rejected Arthas's order to purge the infected population, refusing to condone the slaughter of civilians. Arthas stripped him of his positions within the Silver Hand, but Uther continued to worry for his former student after Arthas departed for Northrend 25 28.

Afterward, Uther arranged Lordaeron's payment to Rod and approved Rod's request to learn paladin spells instead. During their journey, he taught Rod the principles and spells of the Holy Light, repeatedly inviting the exceptionally gifted mage to join the Knights of the Silver Hand 28 30.

Convinced by Rod's account of Tyr's Tomb, Uther redirected his company to Tirisfal Glades to recover the Silver Hand Warhammer and eliminate Zakaz. He was recognized by Tyr's Guard as the most suitable living candidate to inherit the weapon 37 39.

Within Tyr's Tomb, Uther led the group through shadow creatures and Faceless Ones, claimed the Silver Hand Warhammer, and fought Zakaz alongside Rod, Jaina, the paladins, and Tyr's Guard. After Zakaz's defeat, he assisted Rod in purifying the Faceless One's Shadow Crystal into a Holy Light Crystal 40 41 46 50.

Appearance

Uther is a tall, powerfully built human knight, described as a towering man of roughly two meters. He is commonly seen carrying a warhammer and surrounded by conspicuous Holy Light when fighting or addressing Tyr's Guard 28 38 41.

Personality

Uther is disciplined, principled, and demanding of those under his care. He deliberately avoids excessive praise for Arthas because he fears that praise would make a prince arrogant; this severity contributes to friction between mentor and student during the Undead Plague 23.

Despite Arthas's defiance and dismissal of his authority, Uther does not abandon him. He remains deeply concerned after Arthas leaves for Northrend and believes the prince should return, admit his mistake, and face the Scourge with proper support 25 28.

He is also humble and respectful toward others' choices. He accepts Tyr's Guard's decision to remain independent rather than join the Silver Hand, and he sees Rod's potential as a wielder of the Holy Light rather than dismissing him for being a mage 29 30 49.
