Background / History

Beyond the heavens, the Nine Heavens Realm is an ancient land whose origin cannot be traced even by the river of time. It is the core native land of the present Nine Heavens Great Realm, where the orthodox fortunes of the Six Paths have long gathered. 182 351

The Profound Heaven Domain, Grand Heaven Domain, and several other Heavenly Domains are technically parts of the Nine Heavens Realm. An unknown ancient calamity separated them into outer domains; cultivators originating there are generally regarded as outer-domain cultivators after entering the Nine Heavens. 219

The realm has repeatedly absorbed or drawn closer to worlds beyond heaven. Such “return” unifies fortunes, removes barriers between realms, connects earth veins, and synchronizes the flow of time until a realm can become part of the Nine Heavens as a continent. 528

The Primordial Cataclysm shattered not only its visible Earth Continents but also profoundly altered its subsequent temporal tributaries, including the concealment of reincarnation and the emergence of the present Nether Sea. 501

Lu Qing's observations of earlier ages show successive changes in the protagonists of heaven and earth. Fierce beasts and Ancient Demons withdrew before the Age of the Heavenly Gods, while the subsequent rise of the Six Paths ended the innate deities' position as the overwhelmingly favored protagonists of the Nine Heavens. 761

During the First Era, five Superior True Persons expounded the Golden Core path and the New Dao. Their teaching presented the opening of mountain gates and enlightenment of all beings as a means of surviving another approaching Great Tribulation. Descendants of Primordial Immortals recognized that the new cultivation path might reshape the Nine Heavens and displace their older tradition. 875 878

In the current era, the Nine Heavens is expanding toward the void beyond heaven. Its distances, spiritual objects, and frontier territories are increasing, while new heavens and earth are being born through a pattern different from the layered heavens of antiquity. 991 1037 1130

The realm's recent transformations have also broadly improved the innate foundations of postnatal beings. This is a general strengthening of life within heaven and earth rather than a direct increase to any individual's talent, comprehension, or providence. 650

Earlier in the struggle over Fate Allotment, the creation and expansion of the Demon Land World altered the realm's geography, separating Northern Heaven Continent from the Demonic Path's Four Lands and bringing the Heavenly Domain closer to demonic territories. The reopened Heavenly Domain Teleportation Array provided routes into the new world, although spatial rifts made the passage dangerous. 353

Ancient Era sects and unfamiliar terrain later began appearing across the expanding Earth Continents. Reports included Golden Jade Ruyi Tower, Heavenly Brow Mountain, All-Immortal Gate, and the ancient Spirit Palace. Some returning ancient cultivators interpreted their encounters with the present realm as a Mirage Tower illusion. 1023 1024

The temporal upheaval subsequently developed into the appearance of the Second Cultivation World, which began overlapping the current Nine Heavens era and the Long River of Time. Bifang regarded this as a possible route for ancient powerhouses to enter the present and anticipated a major catastrophe associated with the upheaval. 1207

News from another cosmos then revealed the corpse of an immortal who had successfully ascended. Although its Great Dao had been erased, its physical shell remained, suggesting that ascension involved a transformation not yet understood within Nine Heavens. Lu Qing's avatar expected the discovery to influence the realm's Providence and the Ancient Era's Variable Fate. Over the following century, Dao Lords increasingly turned their attention away from the River of Time toward a distant cosmic expanse. 1237 1240

As the realm expands, the distances between Immortal Cities have grown dramatically, spiritual objects have become more plentiful, and the world's outer edge has become impossible for cultivators to perceive. 991 1130

Spatial rifts become more numerous in the Four Seas as one travels farther from the Earth Continents. These rifts may lead to forbidden lands, predecessor inheritances, tombs, or deliberately prepared deathtraps. The deep-sea frontier also accumulates far more tribulation aura than the established continental territories protected by major sects. 749 1130

Territories with established masters are protected by extensive formations and Restrictions extending through the sky and deep into the Earth Veins. Together with the continuing emergence of spiritual energy, these arrangements give heaven and earth a powerful capacity to recover from Dharma Combat. A Dao Lord sinking an entire region represents a level of destruction beyond this ordinary protection. 1166

Name and Cosmology

The name “Nine Heavens” does not simply refer to nine layers of heaven. In the present-era explanation provided to Lu Qing, it refers to the nine great immortal sects that have held dominion through the ages. 219

Ancient records preserve a broader meaning: the ancient Nine Heavens were called the Heaven Beyond Heavens, Cosmic Heaven, and Ninefold Heavens—layer upon layer of cosmos and Myriad-Phenomena Heavens encompassing countless phenomena. Much of this ancient understanding has been lost after successive eras. 691

The ancient designation originated in a primordial cosmology in which Cosmic Heaven, also called Merit Heaven, was named the First Heaven and served as part of a greater sequence of heavens. 691

The modern Nine Heavens follows a different path. Rather than restoring the ancient model of layered heavens, its current expansion produces new heavens and earth within an ever-growing great world. 1130

The Nine Heavens' wider structure also includes surrounding star rivers and lower worlds, rather than only the central Earth Continents. Lu Qing's observations show worlds beyond heaven gradually assuming these positions around the realm, producing an arrangement with similarities to, but substantial differences from, the ancient cultivation world. 1006

The arrival of the Second Cultivation World is a temporal as well as spatial development: it begins overlapping the present era and the Long River of Time. It is therefore distinct from the ordinary return of an Earth Realm as a new continent. 528 1207

Cultivation Environment

The Nine Heavens possesses a far higher public cultivation ceiling than the outer Heavenly Domains. While Golden Core was the highest publicly known realm in Lu Qing’s former region, the Nine Heavens recognizes successive realms including Golden Core, Primordial Spirit, Void Illumination, Reality Insight, Dao Seeking, and Immortal Ascension. 219

The realm’s cultivation environment is shaped by the convergence of the Six Paths’ fortunes. During the Era of Variables, fortune, heavenly secrets, and the appearance of heaven-favored individuals have become increasingly visible and consequential to cultivators and sects alike. 760 813

The changing heaven and earth has made Providence and Fate Allotment accessible to many more cultivators, including ordinary diviners, Fortune Dao cultivators, and those possessing suitable divine pupils. 760

The Nine Heavens Dao Assembly is treated as a meritorious undertaking for heaven and earth: it spreads enlightenment, guides cultivators, and scatters merit qi across participating lands. 528

The realm's rising Fate Allotment and the return of ancient Earth Realms have also increased its carrying capacity, encouraging powerful cultivators to seek the limits of cultivation and the splendor associated with the Primordial Era. 512 525

Rogue Cultivators, rather than disciples of the great Immortal Sects, form the most numerous group in the Nine Heavens cultivation world. Golden Core cultivators are plentiful, but many cannot advance to Primordial Spirit; higher cultivators often remain occupied with cultivating their own worlds and Great Daos. Golden Core is also the threshold for entering the Profound Heaven Dao Sect from its outer-domain Academy. 219 281 389

Despite the increasing number of cultivators drawing on heaven and earth, the realm's spiritual energy and Earth Veins remain abundant. Lu Qing attributes this to the circulation of Fate Allotment and the Providence of the Six Paths. Even the Demonic Path temporarily refrains from damaging the Earth Veins when the prospect of further advancement is visible. 828

Heaven's Way remains immensely powerful despite the loss of the realm's ancient territories. Its punishment of the Demonic Path is understood as an impartial consequence of the Primordial demonic calamity, rather than deliberate hostility toward individual demonic cultivators. Present-day demonic Lightning Tribulations are notably swift and fierce. 361 479

The Nine Heavens Hidden Dragon Ranking includes three thousand exceptional prodigies, with competition intensified by the arrival of geniuses bearing Primordial Era inheritances. Those listed receive a trace of Heaven's Will-created cultivation benefit, while the rankings also reveal heavenly secrets and help cultivators gather momentum. 621

By the later stages of the Era of Variables, high-grade aptitude alone is no longer exceptional within the Profound Heaven Dao Sect, and heaven-grade aptitude is not uncommon. Many sects begin cultivating Providence lineages, judging prospective talents by Providence and Destiny as well as innate aptitude. Lu Qing's teaching avatar observes a generation of disciples whose concentrated Providence makes their competition much fiercer than that of his own generation. 1237

Cultivation Tribulations also become entangled with the wider struggle against returning ancient experts. Bifang observes present-day cultivators intercepting corresponding ancient beings and judges that successfully overcoming these encounters could raise the present cultivation world's overall level, although this remains an assessment rather than a confirmed realm-wide advancement. 1188

Nine Great Immortal Sects

Nine great immortal sects stand as the enduring leaders of the orthodox Immortal Path. Their status has remained stable over immense spans of time despite individual sects encountering difficulties, while the demonic Dao and its innumerable sects stand in opposition. 219

Nevertheless, shared membership in the Immortal Path does not eliminate rivalries, cold relations, or disputes over resources and interests; the nine sects cannot be assumed to act as a unified force against the Four Lands. 219 237 905

The Nine Heavens is contested and influenced by the Six Paths, including the Immortal, Demonic, Divine, Human, Spirit, and Ghost Paths. Their fortunes are closely tied to the heavens and earth where their respective lineages hold dominion. 691 765

• Demonic Path — Has remained active beneath the Nine Heavens for five eras and retains deep hidden foundations. The revival of the Devil Master's Great Dao and the schemes of the Demon Abyss Old Devils remain major dangers in the current era. 691 1095 1131 The later contention over the Longevity Devil Master's Great Dao draws out ancient survivors such as the Nether Devil Heir and temporarily redirects the attention of experts across the Six Paths. 1187

Reincarnation and the Nether Sea

The East Sea’s Reincarnation Nether Sea is a major anomaly within the Nine Heavens. Its manifested entrance and the emergence of reincarnation ruins, cave abodes, and predecessor tombs caused a realm-wide sensation that ordinary world-mergers could not match. 737 739

Despite connections in aura and fortune, Nine-Nether and the Nether Sea are distinct. Lu Qing concludes that the present Nine Heavens has no Nine-Nether; it has only the reincarnation of the Nether Sea. 761 945

Later, Lu Qing’s Six Paths of Reincarnation prepares to link with the Nine Heavens, treating its worlds as the sole true reality to be connected across time and space. 999

Lu Qing subsequently establishes a Netherworld order, assigns the Book of Life and Death and Judge's Brush to its administrators, and becomes the master of the Nether Sea's Reincarnation. This development makes the ancient Nine-Nether's remaining old monsters increasingly hostile to the present order. 999 1163

The upheaval caused by the Reincarnation Nether Sea affects both individual cultivators and sect fortunes throughout the realm, reaching the West Sea and even its Inheritance Grounds. Daoist lineages possessing Supreme Treasures restore their disturbed Providence within three breaths, whereas those without such suppression remain vulnerable to the turbulence. 738

The absence of an established present-day Nine-Nether does not mean its ancient influence has disappeared. Nine-Nether beings manipulate Destinies entering the Nine Heavens, its aura reappears during the contention over Cui Zhen's Heavenly Mandate, and remnants of its reincarnation Great Dao remain within heaven and earth. 813 815 944 1003

Current Era

The Nine Heavens is an epicenter of the Era of Variables. The West Sea and Eight Wastelands repeatedly become the densest points of converging fortune and heavenly-secret activity on the Heavenly Net Chessboard. 967

The Six Paths' fortunes, individual cultivators' fortunes, and the fortunes of living beings are closely interconnected in this era. The emergence of a powerful figure normally produces detectable changes unless that figure deliberately conceals their presence. This makes the return of ancient experts difficult to separate from the realm's visible struggle over Providence. 1101

During the turmoil surrounding the Heaven-Earth Grand Trend, Bifang concludes that Dao Lords are unlikely to fight to the death within the Nine Heavens cultivation realm. He expects their battles to move Beyond the Heavens or into other tributaries of time, since the loss of Dao Body avatars would damage their Great Dao foundations. This is his assessment of the developing conflict, not an established prohibition on Dao Lord combat within the realm. 1207

The discovery of an ascended immortal's corpse in a distant cosmos introduces a new object of interest beyond local struggles. Lu Qing's avatar speculates that Dao Lords might abandon their current contests to investigate it, and senses that the news will alter Nine Heavens' Providence. A century later, Dao Lords are described as redirecting their attention toward a distant cosmic expanse, while newly appearing worlds bring Nine Heavens into contact with different cultivation systems. 1237 1240

By the latest stage, major sects openly seek control of these worlds for their resources. Floating Light carries widely available missions to claim them, and a newly discovered realm containing the auras of supreme ancient immortals attracts both old lineages searching for their ancestors and other sects seeking opportunities. 1241

Communication and Information

Floating Light enables reports, recorded images, rumors, rankings, and missions to circulate rapidly across the cultivation world and between worlds. Its recording functions allow distant phenomena to become subjects of discussion throughout Nine Heavens, while heavenly-secret rankings can be consulted through the same medium. 666 1021

Rumor cultivators use the network to record and broadcast major confrontations as they unfold, including the Nether Devil Heir's appearance on Western Heaven Continent. Their reports make events involving ancient experts immediately relevant to a broad audience, although information concerning protected heavenly secrets can disappear and attempts to probe them may provoke backlash. 1187

The broader transformation of heaven and earth also increases exchanges between Earth Continents and overseas regions. Major events spread beyond the territories in which they occur, giving cultivators more opportunities to study sect Providence, personal Providence, Six Paths Providence, and ranking-list Providence. 760
