Background / History
Contract Spirit Masters emerged after Monster Dungeons, Secret Realms, and raid boss calamities brought humanity close to extinction. Conventional firearms and heavy weapons achieved little against the invaders. Humans with spiritual power appeared alongside the miraculous arrival of Primordial Contract Spirit Card Pools, allowing humanity to summon otherworldly allies and gradually stabilize civilization 5.
Several hundred years before the main story, many masters exploited their spirits’ dependence on spiritual power to threaten and enslave them. The later Contract Spirit Equality Law established that Contract Spirits were humanity’s partners, sharing its honor and disgrace—not slaves or subordinates 72.
Contracts and Responsibilities
Summoning and Soul Contracts
- Card draws: Masters spend Spirit Stones at Primordial Card Pools to summon otherworldly beings. Contract Spirits have low drop rates, with stronger beings being harder to obtain 5.
- Initial connection: Drawing a spirit creates a soul connection that sustains its basic existence. The summoner receives the first right to contract with it 2.
- Formal contract: A Soul Contract allows the master’s spiritual power to flow into the spirit. Mo Shiyu’s contract restores Xia Yuan’s fading body immediately 3.
- Unwanted summons: Masters can retain the initial connection while selling an unwanted spirit to another person or an official organization, recovering part of their expenditure 2.
- Multiple partners: A master can command several Contract Spirits. Han Guang competes with three, while other ranked competitors field five or six 45 56.
Treatment of Contract Spirits
Jiang Wen identifies refusing to casually abandon summoned spirits as a basic professional principle:
“No matter what rank of Contract Spirit you pull, you must never casually abandon them and let them dissipate. That's the most basic principle of being a Contract Spirit Master!” 6
- Contract Spirits normally prefer masters with greater spiritual power, since stronger support improves their usable strength and makes leveling easier 11.
- A spirit’s wishes can conflict with family interests. Xia Yuan refuses House Mo’s attempt to place him with a stronger master and recognizes only Mo Shiyu 11 12.
- Newly formed Soul Contracts can be unstable, making their holders vulnerable to masters seeking to take their spirits 20.
Abilities & Skills
Spiritual Power Supply
A master’s spiritual reserves sustain Contract Spirits and support their combat abilities 1 5.
- Combat limitation: A spirit’s usable strength depends on both its level and its master’s available spiritual power 5.
- Exhaustion: Powerful techniques can drain a master completely. Xia Yuan’s attack against an assassin exhausts Mo Shiyu, while the Platinum Dragon King’s Word Spirit causes Zhou Ke to collapse 10 53.
- Recovery support: Xiao Hei reduces spiritual power consumption. The End of Time inscription set purifies supplied power, lowers skill costs, and can restore half of both partners’ spiritual power when the master is depleted 21 35.
- Training incentive: Mo Shiyu repeatedly resolves to improve her reserves because Xia Yuan’s growing strength exceeds what she can comfortably support 10 82.
Spirit Tamer Barrier
A defensive ability requiring over 10,000 spiritual power to learn 31.
- Mo Shiyu uses it to protect herself while Xia Yuan is separated from her during an assassination attempt 30 31.
- Concentrated attacks from three high-level A-rank spirits crack the barrier 31.
- The combined abilities Barrier Collapse and Skill Dispel can dismantle it during ranked combat 60.
Storage and Spirit Management
- Exclusive storage: Masters possess a storage space used to collect Spirit Stones and carry breakthrough resources 8 21.
- Rank concealment: Mo Shiyu hides Xia Yuan’s SSR rank, leaving outsiders able to see only his level 14.
Individual Talents
- Potential inspection: Mo Shiyu has possessed a secret ability since childhood that reveals an uncontracted spirit’s attributes and growth potential. It allows her to identify Xia Yuan’s hidden Many-Faced SSR trait despite his visible R rank; this is her personal talent, not an established ability of all masters 2.
Cultivation and Resources
Masters develop their partners through combat, breakthroughs, inscriptions, and specialized support. Contract Spirit grades and levels describe the spirits, while online competitive ranks measure ranked-match standing 1 5 54.
| Development Method | Function and Requirements |
|---|---|
| Spirit grades | Initially listed from lowest to highest as R, F, E, D, C, B, A, SR, SSR, based on power and potential. UR spirits are documented later 1 197 316. |
| Leveling | Spirits gain experience by killing monsters. SSRs start at level 10, and the stated maximum spirit level is 100 5. |
| Experience requirements | SSRs need many times more experience than ordinary spirits. Xia Yuan gains one level from a group of monsters while the supporting Black Cat Spirit gains far more 8. |
| Breakthroughs | Required to continue advancing at designated thresholds; performed with Spirit Stones and breakthrough materials. Requirements vary with the spirit’s rank and strength 9 21. |
| Form changes | A breakthrough can change a spirit’s appearance. Xiao Hei’s first breakthrough turns the black cat into a cat-eared spirit girl 21. |
| Inscriptions | Enhance spirit abilities and become equippable after the level-50 breakthrough. A complete set of five becomes available after the level-90 breakthrough 20. |
| Soul awakening | Generally available to spirits above level 90. Up to three awakenings can greatly increase attributes and combat power, triggered through extreme battles near the boundary between life and death 66. |
Resource Acquisition
- Spirit Stones: Obtained through monster kills and spent on card draws, breakthroughs, purchases, and other cultivation needs 5 21.
- Boss materials: Red-Name Boss drops are valuable breakthrough resources and can be sold through the official website 9.
- Secret Realms: Reward inscriptions as well as experience. Teaming up reduces individual experience but does not reduce each master’s inscription rewards; teammates can exchange unwanted types 21 22.
- Paid assistance: Stronger masters offer dungeon carries for Spirit Stones, while beginners commonly form teams for safety 6.
- Official rewards: The Alliance awards medals, Spirit Stones, and selected materials for major disaster-response contributions 20.
Role in Society
Defense and Disaster Response
- Masters and their spirits clear dungeons, purge monsters, and defend human settlements 5.
- Countries established the Spirit Tamer Alliance to address sudden dungeon disasters whose monsters actively invade populated areas 21.
- Masters serve in both Alliance and military roles. Chen Hu is a military master with a three-star officer’s badge; Han Yue serves with the Alliance’s strategy forces 14 66.
- Emergency deployments distinguish between teams attacking a dungeon boss and reinforcements maintaining an external defensive line 14.
- Their duties can interrupt public events: a Five-Star Dungeon outbreak draws the championship’s chief examiner and stationed Alliance masters away from Golden City 78.
Education and Status
- Specialized academies train masters from high school through university. Longer cultivation time gives upperclassmen advantages in spirit levels and team size 11 35.
- Powerful spirits can elevate a family’s standing. Jiang Wen regards an SSR as an opportunity to take House Jiang to new heights 6.
- SSR ownership is not the only source of influence: the Luo family maintains high standing through numerous powerful SR spirits and extensive connections 73.
- The Imperial Capital contains more than half of the nation’s highest-ranked master colleges, abundant fixed dungeons and Secret Realms, and its largest offline marketplace for masters 73.
- Outstanding competitors attract elite university recruitment. Three leading universities compete to recruit Mo Shiyu and Xia Yuan after their national championship victory 119 120.
Competitive Systems
Online Ranked Tournament
The Great Xia Contract Spirit Master Online Ranked Tournament allows masters to fight opponents nationwide in a special space. Participants can revive through spiritual power expenditure, study tactics and team compositions, and receive government Spirit Stone subsidies according to rank 54.
| Documented Rank | Details |
|---|---|
| Silver | One encountered opponent fields three C-rank and two B-rank spirits 56. |
| Platinum | Considered high-level standing among ordinary masters; matches attract spectators studying tactics and powerful lineups 56. |
| Diamond | Lineups almost always include an SR spirit; masters at this level generally hold substantial status outside ranked space 65. |
| Master | Each victory awards one point 66. |
| King | The pinnacle rank; accessible after reaching 100 Master points 66. |
National Championship
- Selection path: Schools select their top ten masters; provincial competitions then select five representatives for the national contest 35.
- National finals: Golden City hosts the peak tournament, with representatives from twenty provinces 76 77.
- Tower format: One documented finals format matches opponents on each floor. Winners ascend, losers descend, and standings depend on the floors reached 78.
- Revival: The alternate-dimensional tower revives defeated masters and spirits at a spiritual power cost 78.
- Recovery potions: Competitors may bring amounts they can safely consume, but excessive consumption can be fatal 78.
Vulnerabilities and Exceptions
- Targeting the master: A powerful spirit’s human partner remains a strategic weakness. Assassins isolate Xia Yuan to attack Mo Shiyu, and World-Class Wanted Bosses later plan around the same vulnerability 30 163.
- Loss of support: A master’s death can severely weaken even a UR spirit, causing slumber or, in extreme cases, dissipation 255.
- Recovery dependence: Later explanations state that a surviving master can supply spiritual energy to help a severely injured or dead spirit slowly recover. Recovery is not immediate, leaving masters exposed when their spirits fall 255 308.
- Independent Manifestation: Haotian’s skill allows a spirit to exist separately and replenish energy from the world. The spirit must bear its own consumption; exhausting its reserves causes seven days of slumber, and recovery after death is especially costly 254 255.
- Fusion: Feng Luan fused with her own master, removing the separate human partner as a weakness. Her condition differs from Haotian’s independent existence 197 254 255.
