Nancy looked at Helen hesitantly. It was simply unbelievable to her—a terminal lung cancer patient with metastases throughout her body, confirmed by doctors to have less than a week left to live, had suddenly gotten better?
Helen had previously needed assistance even to breathe, yet now she was sitting here chatting and laughing with her daughter like a normal person... Could this be a final burst of vitality before death?
Nancy's heart tightened. Holding back her grief, she watched Helen chatting happily with her daughter, hoping this moment would last a little longer.
More than ten seconds later, doctors and nurses flooded in. They had already prepared for an emergency, only to find the patient sitting on the bed without an oxygen mask, chatting and laughing with her daughter. They were thoroughly puzzled.
While the ward was in chaos, Sean White and Ava had only just left the hospital building.
"This hospital is designed like a maze. Are they afraid patients might escape?"
Sean grumbled irritably.
"Maybe... it was originally designed as a prison?" Ava played along, forcing herself to come up with an excuse for Doctor White.
The female demon felt miserable inside. Did he really think she enjoyed sucking up to Sean White?
She was a demon—a fairly powerful one at that. Not just any demon could grant ordinary people superpowers.
But once she had fallen into Sean White's Black Ledger, even the strongest had to kneel. Ava Ellis believed that, in the thousands of years she had been active on Earth, even the harshest contracts she had ever made were nowhere near as shameless as White's Black Ledger. That thing was completely one-sided. Whether something actually happened or was merely agreed to verbally, any exchange of benefits involving Sean White would be recorded in that ledger.
Back then, she had run her mouth and tempted Sean White, boasting that she could grant him the greatest power...
The result was tragic. The greatest power... Did they know how the Black Ledger interpreted the greatest power?
It meant turning the entire multiverse into debtors!
Until that was accomplished, she, Ava Ellis the demon, would owe Sean White an entire multiverse!
Fuck!
To save herself, Ava Ellis decided to do the thing that would make Sean White happiest, hoping to offset that wish. The result... the thing that made Sean White happiest was having people keep paying him interest...
Keep paying...
Ava was finished. She would probably have to work for Sean White for the rest of her life, paying off interest!
A demon's life was so long... Ava Ellis had found herself a daddy!
How could she not suck up to him? If Doctor White was unhappy, he would stuff some weird thing into her and make her shoulder even more interest...
After leaving the hospital, they headed back to the clinic. On the way, Sean once again considered buying a car. New York taxis were not easy to hail.
He only considered it, though. Aside from Linda, no one could drive, and Linda still had to serve as receptionist, nurse, operator, accountant, cashier, legal representative, and more.
Fine. The legal representative of White Clinic was Linda Carter...
Who told her to have legitimate medical credentials?
By the time they returned to the clinic, it was nearly noon. The entire morning had been wasted at New York Oncology Hospital, though charging double for a house call was quite pleasing.
But the afternoon was far less pleasant. Sean sat idly in the clinic all afternoon without a single patient coming in.
He spent the entire afternoon listening to Ava Ellis chat with Linda Carter. Drawing on her thousands of years of experience, Ava Ellis had Linda Carter completely dazzled.
Just as Sean was getting bored, a woman walked into the clinic and headed straight for his office.
A newspaper was slapped onto Sean White's desk.
"Huh?"
Sean looked up. A pretty face with somewhat Eastern features was less than a foot away from him, though her blue eyes proved she was not Eastern.
"Elektra~ Are you here to pay your bill?"
"Pay my bill? Heh heh. Take a look at this. Your clinic has become famous."
"So you're not here to pay." Sean sounded disappointed before looking down at the newspaper on his desk.
"Mutant Diary~ What kind of trash tabloid is this? Does this count as being famous?"
Sean curled his lip, sounding completely unconcerned. If a trash tabloid could make his clinic famous, he would laugh. Even infamy would not matter.
"By the way, Natchios, when are you paying your debt?" When she repaid the debt, she was Elektra. If she did not, she was Natchios.
"Heh heh." Elektra Natchios sneered twice, lifted herself up, and sat on Sean's desk, looking down at him from above.
"I came to settle accounts with you!"
Sean looked at the hot pants on the desk, which were barely longer than underwear, then swept his gaze over her toned thigh. Damn, this woman's figure was practically cheating.
"Sean White!" Elektra raised her voice, finally drawing Sean's attention away from her thighs.
"Huh? What? Paying your debt?"
"..." Elektra's brows shot up as she said darkly, "What about image rights?"
"Ummmmm..." Sean seriously considered it. Aside from her looks and body, he realized this woman really had nothing else.
"Hmph~" Seeing him actually think about it, Elektra's face reddened. Did this stinking man think she did not know what game he and that little slut Vanessa had played using her appearance?
"I came to settle accounts with you!" she emphasized again.
Having his thoughts interrupted, Sean was not angry. There was no rush, anyway.
"What accounts are we settling? The account is perfectly clear. I restored your blind boyfriend's eyesight, and you owe me 218,000 dollars. Clear as day. What is there to settle? If you don't pay, I'll take you as payment!"
"Pah!" Elektra's face reddened again. This guy really might do something like that.
"Just answer one question!"
"Sure. Ask away."
"Why are the eyes you gave him color-blind?" Elektra glared at Sean. Sean met her gaze without any fear. This girl had pretty eyes. If she covered her nose and mouth with a piece of red cloth, she would look even better.
"..." Elektra was speechless. I'm glaring at you, okay?
"I'm asking you! Why are Matthew's eyes color-blind?!" Elektra asked again.
It was not that Sean had not heard her question. He just did not want to answer it. This woman still had not figured out why Matthew Murdock weighed 91 kilograms but cost 218,000 dollars. That was because, besides Matthew's own weight, there had been another 18 kilograms of something...
"I'm not really sure. Maybe Matthew was color-blind to begin with?" Sean said casually.
After hearing that, Elektra twisted her body and placed one leg on the desk, turning her upper body to look down at Sean.
"Matthew isn't color-blind. You turned him color-blind, so the price should be cut in half!"
Sean relaxed. It was good that she had not discovered the little secret. As for cutting the price in half? Heh.
"Our agreement was to restore his sight... He can see now, right? So the price cannot change. As for only being able to see black and white..."
"Hm?" Elektra's expression froze. "How did you know Matthew can only see black and white?!"
Damn his loose mouth. He had let it slip!
"Didn't you say he became color-blind?" He had not spilled everything yet. There was still room to save it.
Elektra sneered. She turned, jumped down from the desk, walked around it, and approached Sean with a graceful catwalk.
She reached out and pushed Sean's swivel chair, turning him to face her.
"Doctor White, tell me. What exactly are you hiding?"
Elektra bent down and stared into Sean's eyes from close range.
This woman seemed to really like looking at people this way.
Sean still had to think of an excuse, but before he could speak, Elektra said:
"Don't lie to me. I might not be able to guess what you're thinking, but I can tell the truth from a lie. If you won't tell me, I'll move into your home, and Vanessa will keep me company every day!"
What a threat...
Sean held back his laughter so hard that his face nearly twisted.
Move into my home? Have Vanessa keep you company?
Girl, you probably don't know Vanessa can turn into me, do you?
Forget it. To stop Elektra from pursuing this question, Sean decided to tell the truth.
"Well... Mr. Murdock's original eyes were already ruined. That was a disability. They couldn't be repaired, only replaced. Do you understand now?"
Elektra frowned. "You mean you found a pair of color-blind eyes and gave them to Murdock?"
"Tsk~" Sean felt that some things were difficult to say directly, so he could only explain from the side.
"Who would be willing to sell their eyes? Did you think I could get donated corneas? Besides, Murdock's eyes were damaged far beyond just the corneas." Sean tried his best to guide Elektra into thinking it through herself. It would be better if she figured it out than if he directly told her that Mr. Murdock had received a pair of dog eyes.
Well... not from the same dog, either.
Those two poor elderly stray dogs had each lost one eye, but in exchange, they had regained their health.
Seeing that Elektra still did not understand, Sean looked up at her cautiously and said, "Do you know my billing standards?"
Elektra nodded.
"Well... how much does Mr. Murdock weigh?"
Elektra frowned as she thought over Sean's words. She was not stupid; she simply had not considered this question before. Only now did she realize that Sean's charge included roughly twenty extra kilograms.
"You..." Elektra's eyes widened. "What kind of eyes did you give him?"
The girl directly grabbed Sean by the neck with both hands and asked viciously.
"Cough, cough~ Let go!"
Human-limit physical ability was no joke. This woman's grip was stronger than that of a burly man.
Although Sean had unlimited stamina, his strength was nowhere near Elektra's. The moment she grabbed his neck, he panicked and threw a vicious punch at her chest.
The result was that the punch did absolutely nothing. The soft sensation absorbed all the impact.
But Elektra did let go of him and take a step back.
Her face was a little flushed.
Her chest hurt, but she was too embarrassed to rub it. Gritting her teeth, she continued asking:
"What kind of eyes did you give Matthew?"
Sean straightened the collar Elektra had messed up and said irritably, "If you weren't an old acquaintance, I'd give you a heart attack."
Elektra rolled her eyes. "You still haven't answered my question!"
"Two stray dogs. One left, one right. I didn't mix them up."
"You're scamming me!" Elektra roared.
She was almost furious to death. The eyes of two stray dogs? No wonder Matthew said there was such a huge difference in vision between his two eyes. Dog eyes?!
"Pfft~"
Elektra was so angry that she laughed.
After Daredevil got dog eyes, would he awaken some strange ability?
