History

The Hand began as an assassin organization before expanding into a full criminal syndicate. Alongside contract killings, it claimed territory, smuggled goods, trafficked drugs, operated prostitution, and trained assassins; its combined criminal and assassination capabilities made other gangs reluctant to oppose it. 179

In New York, The Hand was Kingpin's principal rival, competing with his organization in drugs and arms dealing. After Kingpin's death destabilized the underworld, the organization became the dominant force and demanded compensation from Sean White's successor organization for an assassin's death. 60

The Hand later stole weapons and personnel from Sean's operations. Sean infiltrated its Manhattan headquarters, but Madame Gao had already evacuated the building. Rather than escalate the conflict, Gao proposed cooperation: The Hand would provide personnel while Sean's side handled operations and market access. 91 92

The arrangement did not prevent further conflict. Hand operatives were connected to the Wildfire Gang's trafficking operation and removed captive girls from the site, while Gao separately planned to infiltrate Vanessa's restoration company. Sean killed Gao after confronting her, though she later returned through The Hand's resurrection methods. 115 116 119 167 184

The organization arranged an underground operation intended to lure Iron Fist to a protected stone containing Dragon Bone. The Defenders intervened, fought through Hand guards and reinforcements, and took the Dragon Bone, intensifying The Hand's campaign against Iron Fist, Daredevil, Stick, and their allies. 168 169 176

Operations and Methods

Assassination and Combat

The Hand deploys ninja assassins in red and black uniforms, including high-ranking black-clad operatives capable of challenging Daredevil in coordinated groups. Its forces use swords, throwing darts, firearms, grenades, ambushes, and confined terrain to overwhelm targets. 92 169 170 172 181

• Its Manhattan headquarters used alarms, surveillance systems, and a dart trap against intruders. 92
• Operatives can be assigned to capture rather than kill when a target, such as Iron Fist, is strategically valuable. 176
• The organization demonstrates extreme internal discipline: one ninja commits ritual suicide after being accused of forgetting his duty. 171

Trafficking and Recruitment

The Hand traffics women and children, then turns selected captives into trained assassins. It also supplies women as “high-end” bodyguards, presenting their loyalty as part of its product. 60 92 115 128

Dragon Bone and Resurrection

Dragon Bone is central to The Hand's survival. The organization considers it important enough to launch major operations against Iron Fist and the Defenders to recover it. 169 182

• Dragon Bone sustains the Five Fingers' longevity; Madame Gao states that The Hand's remaining supply is nearly exhausted. 185
• The Hand can use its supernatural resources to revive fallen members, as demonstrated by Madame Gao's return after Sean killed her. 119 167 184
• By the time of Gao's negotiation with Sean, the remaining Dragon Bone can only extend the Five Fingers' lives and can no longer reliably enable resurrection. 185

Beast and Black Sky

The Hand treats Beast as a secret weapon capable of parasitizing a human mind, granting power and immortality to its host. 167

Elektra died in the past, was revived by The Hand, and was implanted with Beast before being hypnotized. This makes her a Black Sky and ties her directly to the organization's deeper supernatural agenda. 171 182

• Elektra Natchios — Former Hand assassin and Black Sky. The Hand revived her after her death, implanted Beast within her, and hypnotized her; she later seeks to destroy the organization. 60 167 171
