Background

Shangguan Yuzhou entered Cangwu Sect's outer sect in the same batch as Kong Jiao. He frequently visited the Miscellaneous Books Pavilion to read predecessors' travelogues, where he and Kong Jiao became close over two years. Kong Jiao valued that Shangguan never used his genius status to belittle others, while Shangguan appreciated Kong's wit and judgment. 1

He invited Kong Jiao to explore an outer-sect earth cave and trusted him with the Scarlet Radiance Formation's Xun position. Their cooperation broke the formation, and Kong Jiao saved Shangguan from its final eruption. Shangguan thereafter declared that he owed Kong Jiao his life. 2 3
