Background / History

In 1995, Fury worked alongside Carol Danvers against the Kree, destroying a Kree fleet and helping save the Skrulls. That same year, he and Carol confronted Qin Yi over the Space Stone; Fury witnessed Carol attack Qin Yi and be defeated. Carol continued returning to Earth for rematches over the years, but Qin Yi grew increasingly beyond her reach. 8 53 251

Before becoming S.H.I.E.L.D. director, Fury investigated Qin Yi for General Ross and misleadingly classified him as a probable Level Three Mutant. He privately hoped Ross would drive Qin Yi toward S.H.I.E.L.D., giving Fury an opportunity to recruit him. 20

Following the Skrull invasion, Fury was promoted to director of the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division. His concern over Qin Yi's overwhelming power shaped many of his later decisions: he declined to rescue Tony Stark because he believed Qin Yi was already involved, warned the President that Mutant Suppressors would not work on Qin Yi, and began seeking enough superpowered operatives to eventually restrain him. 41 53 57

Fury pursued Captain America as a prospective counterweight to Qin Yi. After leading the Arctic excavation that uncovered Steve Rogers, Fury lost him to a S.H.I.E.L.D. mole and reluctantly sought Qin Yi's assistance. Qin Yi gave Fury Captain America's location, enabling Fury and Bucky Barnes to recover him. 65 67 68

During the Project Insight crisis, Fury survived an assassination attempt and coordinated the response against Hydra. As Earth's major threats disappeared, Fury operated from a S.W.O.R.D. space station and became increasingly determined to prove that his organizations remained necessary. Fury publicly proposed that Qin Yi might be a Kryptonian, using the theory to convince Blue Star's five great powers to establish a cosmic exploration program. After obtaining Wakandan funding, he led Avengers, scientists, and representatives from Earth into space. 193 215 217

The expedition went disastrously wrong. Rocket and Groot captured the team; the Kree later forced them into mining labor; and, after escape, Fury's group was imprisoned by the Shi'ar. After learning that Qin Yi was the Kree Emperor who founded the Galactic Empire, Fury returned to Earth. By 2023, most of his original Avengers had moved on to the Galactic Empire or other duties, and he chose retirement while recognizing that Earth was effectively surrounded by Qin Yi's empire. 252
