Background / History

Bruce Wayne is Gotham City's Batman: publicly the owner of Wayne Enterprises and a playboy, privately a vigilante who fought Gotham's criminals through training, intelligence, and fear rather than superhuman abilities. His actions turned him into an urban legend and made Gotham one of the world's safest cities before his retirement 32.

In the Flashpoint-altered world, an elderly Bruce had retired for years when Zhang Ye and Pietro sought his assistance against General Zod. Though initially suspicious of the strangers and reluctant to return to action, he reopened the Batcave, deployed the Batplane, and joined the mission to locate Superman 34 38.

Bruce assisted Barry Allen in regaining the Speed Force by recreating the conditions of Barry's original accident with a specially constructed steel chair, chemical agents, and a lightning-attracting bat-kite 53. He later helped organize and prepare the Justice Society, anticipating escalating threats from Congress, the military, and increasingly powerful metahumans 533 566.

When Steppenwolf invaded, Bruce used the remaining Mother Box as bait to force the invader into revealing himself. He subsequently infiltrated the Fortress of Solitude alone, disrupted Steppenwolf's bio-chamber, and fought the prematurely awakened Doomsday. He survived only after suffering broken ribs, severe limb injuries, and a broken spine 577 591 596.

Incarnations

Old Bruce Wayne

The original Batman encountered in Gotham is an elderly, white-bearded Bruce Wayne. Though retired at first, he retains his investigative ability, combat instincts, and readiness to intervene when Gotham or Earth is threatened 32 34.

Following the Kryptonian invasion, he covertly establishes the Justice Society and prepares Tim Drake to inherit greater responsibility. His concern over an approaching catastrophe drives him back into active crimefighting and into direct opposition with government attempts to control superhumans 527 566.

After the Doomsday battle, Bruce is left critically injured and later described as being in a vegetative state; he remains an essential source of knowledge concerning the Mobius Chair 597 608 728.

Apokolips War Batman

A Batman from the Apokolips War universe was captured and stripped of his humanity by Darkseid. While seated on the Mobius Chair, he served as Darkseid's strategist and reported the defeat of the Green Lantern Corps 330.

Darkseid's control later breaks when Batman turns on him during an attempt to kill Damian. He helps free the surviving Justice League members from Apokolips' control, though the experience leaves him physically and mentally exhausted 358.

This Batman later becomes part of the mission to protect Flashpoint-1 Gotham and accepts the cover identity of Old Bruce Wayne's son in order to take control of Wayne Enterprises while the elder Bruce is incapacitated 604 608.

Appearance

Batman wears a dark tactical Batsuit built for stealth, mobility, and intimidation. Different versions employ modified armor and specialized capes suited to their respective conflicts.

  • Black cowl with pointed bat ears 167.
  • Cape capable of gliding and shielding others from heavy attacks 249 250.
  • Steel Batsuit used by Old Bruce during the Steppenwolf conflict 581.
  • Cloaking material incorporated into his cape for stealth operations 583.
  • Later appears physically exhausted, with pronounced dark circles beneath his eyes 358.

Personality

Batman is intensely cautious, analytical, and distrustful of unknown allies. After Zhang Ye and Pietro arrive, Bruce secretly monitors them, conducts psychological evaluations, and prepares countermeasures rather than accepting their intentions at face value 55.

He is willing to cooperate when the stakes demand it, but prefers independent action and compartmentalized plans. During the rescue of Superman, he silently leaves Zhang Ye and Pietro to pursue his own objectives after testing their capabilities 38.

Despite his severity, Bruce values the growth of his allies and protégés. He eventually recognizes Barbara and the former Robins as independent heroes rather than sidekicks, while continuing to mentor Tim Drake and prepare him for leadership 369 566.

Abilities & Skills

Peak Human Conditioning

Batman possesses no innate superpowers. His effectiveness comes from extensive training, physical conditioning, and experience against criminals, aliens, and superhumans 32 64.

  • Fights skilled opponents such as Taskmaster and gains the upper hand through combat technique 248.
  • Engages General Zod at close range despite Zod's Kryptonian physiology 64.
  • Defeats multiple Parademons through gunfire, melee weapons, movement, and use of the environment 582 583.
  • Continues operating despite age and severe physical limitations 582 591.

Detective Work and Strategic Planning

Batman specializes in gathering intelligence, studying weaknesses, and creating conditions favorable to his side.

  • Monitors allies and develops contingency plans for threats from other universes 55.
  • Uses the Mother Box as bait to draw out Steppenwolf rather than confronting him on the invader's terms 577.
  • Determines that anomalous Parademons may be connected to a force other than Darkseid 704.
  • Identifies an impostor using Zhang Ye's appearance and recognizes that the false Zhang Ye is not the real person 712 713.

Stealth and Infiltration

Batman repeatedly infiltrates guarded installations and escapes detection even from advanced enemies.

  • Brings the Batplane over a military base without triggering radar 38.
  • Enters the Fortress of Solitude through Parademon defenses 582.
  • Uses darkness and cloaking material to ambush Parademons within a Kryptonian derelict ship 583.
  • Operates covertly in Attilan while investigating Hydra's planned transaction 604.

Adaptation to Exotic Power

Batman can effectively use unfamiliar technology and supernatural power, although these enhancements are situational rather than innate.

  • Plans to combine Kryptonite-like radiation with Fear Toxin to weaken Kryptonians 55.
  • Becomes a shadow-energy-infused “bat-wizard” while confronting Red Skull, wielding Dark Dimension-like energy as a cape and enabling sudden movement around his opponent 253.
  • Resists the Anti-Life Equation, having previously overcome it 714.
  • Gains higher-dimensional knowledge after using the Mobius Chair 604.
