When Su Nan heard his parents' words, his eyes flickered slightly. He instinctively looked at Feng Yang. Their gazes met in midair. Feng Yang's eyes were as still as an ancient well, while Su Nan's gaze shifted away slightly. During the surgery, he had dreamed again of what happened in his previous life. He had given everything for Feng Yang, lost his family, been disfigured and crippled while saving him, only to be abandoned by Feng Yang in the end and killed by Feng Yang's wife. Yet after being reborn, he had been carried out of the fire by Feng Yang. Now everyone knew Feng Yang was his lifesaver. Even his parents had avoided the tragic fate of dying in a car accident because of Feng Yang's reminder.
For a moment, Su Nan was at a loss. He did not know whether he should avenge the misery of his previous life, or who he should seek revenge against. Su Zhenbang and his wife urged Su Nan to thank Feng Yang, but Su Nan remained silent. He did not want to lower his head to the person who had caused his death in his previous life. He could not get over that hurdle in his heart, even if Feng Yang had saved his whole family in this life.
Feng Yang could not be bothered with what Su Nan was thinking. He had already concluded that Su Nan would never tell anyone what had happened at the fire scene. Su Zhenbang and his wife's reaction only confirmed it further.
The elders from both families noticed that something was off between the children and exchanged uneasy looks. Liu Huiwan gently patted Su Nan's arm, but Su Nan used the excuse that he had just undergone surgery and wanted to sleep. He burrowed beneath the covers and did not move.
Seeing this, the Feng Family immediately took their leave. As Su Zhenbang and his wife escorted them to the elevator, they were still complaining that Su Nan was being unreasonable. After all, Feng Yang had risked his life to carry Su Nan out of the fire, yet Su Nan had not even said thank you.
Feng Jianguo and his wife were not feeling particularly pleased either, but they could not show it. Su Nan had nearly died and had just come out of surgery, so his mind was surely not very clear. They could not hold it against a child. Instead, they had to urge Su Zhenbang and his wife not to blame Su Nan, to take good care of him, and not to punish him over such a small matter.
Seeing how understanding the Feng Family was, Su Zhenbang and his wife were even more moved. Though they could not bear to truly blame their own child, they thought even more highly of the Feng Family. Before entering the elevator, they held Feng Yang's hand and thanked him repeatedly, believing that after surviving this ordeal together, the two boys would surely be good brothers for life.
Chapter 4
"Xiao Yang, what's going on between you and Su Nan?"
The moment they left the hospital, Feng Jianguo and his wife could no longer hold it in. "Why did it seem like the way Su Nan looked at you wasn't quite right?"
Their son had carried Su Nan out of the fire, saving his life. Yet there had not been the slightest hint of gratitude in Su Nan's gaze when he looked at Feng Yang. Instead, he looked bitter and conflicted. Then there was their own son, whose expression had been cold and indifferent, with a faint trace of rejection and wariness. Even someone as careless as Feng Jianguo could tell that something was definitely going on between the two boys.
Feng Yang did not want to tell his parents about the tangled mess between himself and Su Nan. Rebirth was difficult enough for people to accept. What was more, it seemed that he and Su Nan had not even been reborn from the same timeline. Even if he wanted to explain, he probably could not make it clear.
But just as his father had noticed, Feng Yang truly was wary of Su Nan. His main concern was that Su Nan might hurt someone while the Feng Family was completely unprepared, using that as a way to take revenge on him. In his previous life, Feng Yang had seen many people who would seek revenge even after turning into vengeful ghosts. He knew just how far someone filled with hatred could go for revenge—without exaggeration, it would not be strange for them to do anything irrational or utterly without limits. And Su Nan's actions in his previous life happened to prove exactly that.
Unfortunately, Feng Yang could not warn the Feng Family using things that had not yet happened. Otherwise, Feng Jianguo and his wife would definitely drag their babbling son back to the psychiatric department. Yet he could not let the Feng Family face Su Nan without any guard up. After thinking it over, Feng Yang recalled the explanation Su Nan had given at the fire scene and blurted out, "Su Nan confessed to me."
Feng Jianguo and his wife, who had still been guessing what conflict the two boys had gotten into: "???"
The straight-laced older brother whose thoughts had even wandered to whether Su Nan and Feng Yang liked the same girl, causing their brotherhood to fall apart, but who had never imagined this sort of plot: "!!!"
At that moment, the Feng Family felt as though the door to a whole new world had opened before them!
Feng Dad, straightforward by nature and completely unfamiliar with this sort of thing, was the first to recover. "No, aren't you both boys?" How was a boy supposed to confess to another boy?
Feng Mom also came to her senses. "Su Nan is gay?"
Feng Fei's thoughts went a step further. "He confessed to you, and you turned him down. But you still saved him. Is that why Su Nan looked so bitter whenever he saw you?"
After thinking for a moment, Feng Fei asked again, "Did you say something harsh when you rejected him? Did Su Nan lose face because of it?"
That made everything fit together perfectly. No wonder Su Nan had acted so strangely in the hospital room. He had confessed to Feng Yang and been rejected. Maybe Feng Yang had not put it very nicely when he rejected him. Kids had strong pride, so Su Nan must have been unable to save face. Perhaps his love had turned to hate because of it. Then the haunted house caught fire, and Feng Yang saved Su Nan. Su Nan's pride was making him resist, but he had no choice but to acknowledge the fact, which was why he had become so conflicted.
The Feng Family suddenly understood. Feng Yang did not need to say another word; they had already filled in the entire story themselves. The logic was clear, reasonable, meticulous, and utterly flawless.
Watching the Feng Family's imaginations run wild, Feng Yang was spared the trouble of making up the story again.
"That was more or less it." Feng Yang nodded shamelessly, not feeling in the least that there was anything wrong with digging a pit for someone who had indirectly caused his entire family's death in his previous life and was still thinking about killing him for revenge in this one. "So if you see Su Nan again in the future, you must stay alert. I'm worried his love will turn to hate and he'll stir up some trouble later."
"That's probably not necessary, is it?" Feng Dad hesitated. The Feng Family and the Su Family had been neighbors for years, and Su Nan had grown up under Feng Jianguo and his wife's watch. He was such a mild-tempered child. He should not be that extreme, right?
