Background / History
Saul was found as an infant on an Ork-infested world. His psychic ability to repair damaged machinery led Reclusiarch Jason to regard him as a revelation from the Emperor and name him after the first king of ancient Terran myth. Veteran Sergeant Malakai and his squad were appointed guardians for Saul and his mother. Saul's presence immediately eased Malakai's old wounds and implant rejection, moving the Space Marine to tears for the first time since his transformation. 304
After the Hope Ark reached Optera, Apothecary Ryan discovered that Saul possessed near-perfect compatibility with Sanguinius's gene-blood. Saul's blood could stabilize damaged gene-seed afflicted by the Black Rage, making him a possible answer to the Lamenters' hereditary curse. 309
At fifteen, Saul refused special treatment and chose to enter the Tenth Company as an ordinary Scout. He insisted on earning the trust of the Lamenters through service rather than accepting sainthood or command by birthright. Over the next twenty years, he rose from Scout to Second Company Captain; his presence repeatedly turned the Chapter's otherwise disastrous missions into improbable victories. 310
Appearance
Saul is a tall, golden-armored Space Marine whose presence is repeatedly compared to a star or miniature sun. His appearance became more overtly miraculous after his consecration as Chapter Master. 344 396
- Long golden hair, visible during his descent onto Vior'la. 344
- Golden eyes described as holding the weight of nine reincarnated lives. 376
- Golden power armor covered in sacred runes and radiance. 349
- After the Sanguinius blood ritual, his eyes become a purer gold that inspires warmth and hope in observers. 396
Personality
Saul is humble toward his own status. Although the Lamenters initially viewed him as a living saint, he rejected privileges at his coming-of-age ceremony and chose to serve as an ordinary Scout. He considers his life a debt owed to the brothers who rescued him. 310
As a commander, he is calm, analytical, and willing to overturn established Imperial practice. He prioritizes intelligence warfare, logistics, surprise attacks, and rapid decision-making; military leaders accepted his supreme command after he identified flaws in their fleet deployment and supply lines. 327 328
His compassion is directed primarily toward humanity and his Chapter. Saul repeatedly risks himself to protect Imperial soldiers and civilians, but he is merciless toward xenos, traitors, and Chaos forces. He refuses Tau surrender and considers the elimination of the Tau Empire a strategic objective rather than a territorial dispute. 353 388 391
