Organization and Traditions

• Leadership: Hiashi leads the clan. His younger brother Hizashi led the branch family and took charge of the Police Force 11 95.
• Main and branch families: Nearly all combat personnel came from the branch family, whose members bore the Caged Bird seal and were expected to obey the main family 5 11.
• Caged Bird: The seal protected branch-family Byakugan from being taken after death, but a main-family member who knew its secret could also use it to punish or kill its bearers 12 398 400.
• End of the system: Hiashi forbade new Caged Bird marks, ended use of the secret seal, and abolished the formal main–branch distinction 420 426.

Byakugan

• Provides long-range observation and reconnaissance; its visual range depends on the eye's purity, the user's training, and the user's strength 12.
• Makes Hyuga shinobi sought-after mission teammates and useful patrol members 11 83.
• Can reveal chakra signatures through obscuring mist, as Morisuke demonstrated during a Mist Village ambush 12.

Gentle Fist

• Allows Police Force members to seal an opponent's chakra 11.
• Includes advanced techniques such as Rotation and Gentle Step Twin Lion Fist. The latter requires the Byakugan and exceptional chakra control 183 636.

History

Taking over the Police Force

The Hyuga Clan took over Konoha's Police Force as the Uchiha withdrew. Hizashi staffed it with branch-family members and instructed them to enforce the law gently. Public security improved and villagers praised their approach, though the officers struggled with disputes involving influential residents 11 12.

Soon after the takeover, Ao and a Mist Village squad ambushed a Hyuga patrol. Morisuke Hyuga sent a warning flare before dying; his Caged Bird seal destroyed his Byakugan after his death 12. The clan later worked closely with the Uchiha on missions and patrols 57 88.

Strain with the Uchiha

Fourth Elder Kaito arranged for Hyuga members to observe Uchiha shops through their Byakugan. Hayato uncovered the activity, and Hizashi warned Fugaku Uchiha 88 89. The Uchiha subsequently withdrew their remaining members from the Police Force. Hiashi objected: Hyuga officers had relied on Uchiha help with cases they could not conveniently handle themselves, while Police Force duties now tied up personnel needed for other missions 89 95.

The Caged Bird crisis

Kaito's body was assimilated by White Zetsu, and he used the Caged Bird seal against branch-family members. Hizashi was among those killed; Neji survived but lost his sight. The recorded toll was sixty-five branch-family and thirteen main-family deaths, with thirty-seven of the branch-family deaths caused by the seal 398 405 407 412.

The losses brought the families close to fighting. Orochimaru detained Hiashi and demanded that the Caged Bird system end 406 412. Natsuki saved Hizashi, restored Neji's sight with transplanted Byakugan, and removed Neji's seal 412. Hiashi apologized to the branch family and abolished the practice, but fifty-seven members chose to leave and join Natsuki's Uchiha forces 420. The clan's remaining strength was severely depleted 431 460.

Relationships

• Uchiha Clan — Former Police Force colleagues and frequent mission partners. Their relationship was strained by Kaito's surveillance scheme; after the Caged Bird crisis, the Uchiha accepted departing Hyuga branch-family members 57 88 95 420.
• Orochimaru — As Fifth Hokage, he intervened in the clan crisis, ordered the end of the Caged Bird system, and punished its continued use 419 430.
• Mist Village — Ao's possession of a Hyuga Byakugan made him an enemy of the clan; his squad killed a Hyuga patrol near Konoha 12.
