Background

Obito was an Uchiha whose surviving body and right eye disappeared together, leaving him presumed dead. His loss of Rin Nohara became the basis of his hatred for Konoha and his conviction that reality should be replaced through the Infinite Tsukuyomi. He later admitted to Kakashi that he blamed Minato for failing to save Rin and the village 132 141.

Madara deliberately engineered Obito’s descent. He arranged for Rin to become the Three-Tails’ jinchūriki, isolated Kakashi and Rin while Minato was away, and ensured Obito witnessed Rin’s death at Kakashi’s hand; Madara’s purpose was to turn Obito into his pawn 996.

Although Obito initially claims he bears no ill will toward the Uchiha Clan, he targets its members and seeks their Sharingan whenever he needs additional power 85 610. The clan publicly disowns him after confirming his responsibility for the Nine-Tails’ Rampage, removes his name from the Cairn of Remembrance, and places a permanent bounty of three hundred million on him 146 150.

Appearance

Obito commonly conceals his identity behind a vortex-pattern mask and dark robes. His appearance becomes increasingly damaged as his body modifications, ocular techniques, and Rinnegan strain accumulate.

Personality

Obito is driven by obsessive grief, resentment, and a refusal to accept the world as it is. Rin’s death remains his central emotional trigger; insults concerning her or Kakashi can provoke immediate rage and reckless attacks 270 714.

He is also cautious and adaptive. Repeated defeats by Natsuki and the Uchiha force him to abandon direct retaliation, master his new eyes, stockpile resources, and build an independent power base before resuming his plans 135 282. He later relies increasingly on Tobi and Muku for analysis, recognizing his own shortcomings in long-term schemes 589.

Despite using implanted Sharingan as expendable resources, Obito initially resists covering his body with the eyes of clan members, believing it would make him “neither human nor ghost” 135. This restraint erodes as his conflicts escalate and he implants Madara’s remaining Sharingan into his body 336.

Obito attempts to recruit Itachi while posing as Madara. Itachi recognizes him, traps him in Tsukuyomi for seven days, and exhausts his mental energy until his Sharingan deactivates. Obito survives by using Izanagi but loses his left eye’s sight 20.

Reclaiming Kakashi’s Eye

After learning that the Uchiha are developing techniques specifically suited to counter Kamui, Obito decides that a single Mangekyo is no longer enough. He abducts Kakashi into the Kamui Dimension, defeats him with Wood Release, reveals his identity, and takes back his left Sharingan 130 131 132.

Exposure and Expulsion

Natsuki and Kakashi identify Obito as the Masked Man behind the Nine-Tails’ Rampage. The Uchiha Clan publicly exposes his crimes, expels him from the clan registry, and issues a permanent three-hundred-million bounty while distributing intelligence about his space-time ninjutsu 141 146 150.

Tsuren Island Defeat

Obito attacks Shisui and Itachi on Tsuren Island, then battles Natsuki and Itachi after Natsuki arrives.
