James was a little unhappy.

"I thought you were pretty good!"

"Maybe I'll break tradition. So which house do you want to go to?"

"Gryffindor!"

James waved an invisible sword as if he had one in hand. It was obvious that he held Gryffindor in especially high regard.

Snape let out a mocking sound.

He sneered. "Only people with well-developed limbs enter Gryffindor!"

"And you? Your limbs don't look very developed, and your brain seems pretty simple too!"

Sirius cut in.

James burst out laughing.

Lily looked deeply disgusted by the two of them.

She stood up.

"Come on, Severus. Let's get away from them!"

"Tch, Snivellus!"

They stood behind Snape.

This was the Sorting.

They saw Professor McGonagall place the Sorting Hat atop Lily's head.

The Sorting Hat shouted, "Gryffindor!"

Lily could only drag her feet over to Gryffindor.

Sirius made room for her.

But Lily was still furious. She folded her arms and turned her back on Sirius, making it clear that she was utterly at odds with him.

Next came Lucius and Goyle... Finally, it was Snape's turn.

The Sorting Hat shouted, "Slytherin!"

Snape followed Lucius and the others over to Slytherin.

They were getting farther and farther away from Gryffindor.

The scene vanished again.

Lily and Snape were walking through one of the castle courtyards.

They seemed to be arguing.

"I thought we were friends—the best of friends!"

Snape said angrily.

Lily folded her arms.

"Yes, best friends. But I hate your other friends! Especially Avery and Malfoy...

"They're always sneaking around. You have no idea how awful they are in private. They even cast spells on Mary!"

Lily walked up to a pillar and looked up at that sallow, gaunt face.

"That was nothing. They were joking..."
