Background / History

Early life and Gellert Grindelwald

Dumbledore's youth was defined by his close relationship with Gellert Grindelwald and the death of his sister, Ariana. During an argument involving Albus, Grindelwald, and Aberforth, Ariana was caught in the ensuing conflict and died; none of the participants knew whose spell killed her. Aberforth held Albus partly responsible and assaulted him at Ariana's funeral. 779 833

Although Dumbledore and Grindelwald later became rivals, their bond endured. Dumbledore ultimately accepted Grindelwald's explanation of Darren's unusual bloodline and released him from Nurmengard, despite recognizing the decision as irrational and dangerous. 250 Their reconciliation later developed into active cooperation against Voldemort. 858 859

Encounters with Tom Riddle

As a younger professor, Dumbledore visited Tom Riddle at his orphanage and introduced him to the magical world. He immediately recognized Tom's arrogance, cruelty, and habit of stealing trophies, requiring him to return stolen items and apologize before attending Hogwarts. 724

After becoming Headmaster, Dumbledore refused Voldemort's application for the Defense Against the Dark Arts post. He saw through Voldemort's disguise and correctly concluded that the request concealed another objective connected to Hogwarts' heirlooms. 744

Darren Potter's arrival

Dumbledore personally visited Darren after Hogwarts discovered him. Conflict with the Ministry

Dumbledore repeatedly opposed Cornelius Fudge's attempts to undermine Hogwarts. During the aftermath of an attack on Darren and other students, he expelled the perpetrators, broke their wands, and was temporarily appointed acting Minister while Fudge was investigated. 213 215

When the Ministry attempted to arrest him over Dumbledore's Army, Dumbledore openly claimed responsibility for the group. Darren incapacitated Fudge, Umbridge, and the Aurors, after which Dumbledore altered their memories and left Hogwarts to shield the school and its students. 666

Horcrux investigation and apparent death

Dumbledore tutored Harry and Darren through memories of Voldemort's past, using the Pensieve to teach them about Tom Riddle's origins, his obsession with trophies, and his Horcruxes. 716 724 725 743 745

Knowing he was weakened and expecting Voldemort's plans to advance, Dumbledore arranged for Snape to kill him at the appropriate moment. He believed his apparent death would make Voldemort overconfident, while also ordering Snape to protect Draco Malfoy. 852 On the Astronomy Tower, he prevented Harry and Darren from intervening before Snape cast the Killing Curse. 755 756

His death was staged. His soul and life force were transferred through a scar altered by Grindelwald, allowing Dumbledore to remain hidden while Harry and Darren continued the war. 760 859

Return and Voldemort's defeat

Dumbledore and Grindelwald reappeared during the final confrontation with Voldemort. Dumbledore revealed that the Elder Wand's true master was Darren, not any of the wizards who had physically possessed it. 858 859

When Voldemort cast the Killing Curse, Dumbledore's Disarming Charm and the Elder Wand's loyalty to Darren caused the curse to rebound and kill Voldemort. 859 Dumbledore then attempted to save Darren after his apparent death. 859
