Background / History

Hanami is an ancient Cursed Spirit, stated to be at least several centuries old. As one of the Four Calamities, she embodies humanity’s fear of nature and is correspondingly close to natural life. 3 5

She operates alongside Kenjaku, Jogo, Mahito, and later Dagon. Although she initially regards Kana Shizumi as merely someone Kenjaku brought in, she accepts Kenjaku’s order to accompany Kana on a mission to Kyoto. 2 3

Following the Kyoto operation, Hanami comes to regard Kana as a companion. She directly asks Kenjaku to find a way to make Kana stronger, citing his weakness as a concern. 16

Appearance

Hanami is a pale, abnormally tall humanoid Cursed Spirit with a broad build and a grotesque, plant-like form. Her appearance is intimidating despite her consistently calm manner. 2 5

Personality

Hanami is taciturn, stoic, and notably less malicious than Mahito. She speaks plainly, rarely displays overt emotion, and is willing to quietly follow orders when she has no objection. 2 5

Despite being a Cursed Spirit, Hanami shows consideration for companions. She promises to shield Kana during their first mission, brings him medicine and clothing after his fight with Mai Zenin, and later presses Kenjaku to help Kana become stronger. 7 15 16

Her connection to nature also informs her behavior. Hanami absorbs vitality from natural things to sustain herself, but refuses to feed on seasonal Kawazu Cherry blossoms simply because she wants to appreciate them. 5

Kyoto Sukuna’s Finger Recovery

Kenjaku assigns Hanami to escort Kana Shizumi to Kyoto and recover a Sukuna Finger. Hanami takes responsibility for direct combat while instructing Kana to deal with lesser Cursed Spirits. 2 7

The mission is complicated when Kana alters events and causes Kamo Noritoshi to encounter Hanami. Hanami battles Kamo, withstands Piercing Blood, and later rescues Kana from Mai Zenin after his defeat. 10 11 14

Hanami ultimately completes the original objective, returning the intact Sukuna Finger to Kenjaku. 16

Cursed Object Search

Hanami reunites with Kana and Mahito while they seek Six Paths Tsuji Cursed Objects. She joins the inspection of Jogo’s collection and destroys a Grade 2 Cursed Spirit attracted by the unsealed cursed items. 62 64

Zenin Clan Confrontation

Hanami accompanies Kana and Mahito to investigate an abnormally powerful Cursed Spirit. She identifies the target as a possible Cursed Womb—an immature but growing powerful Cursed Spirit tied to its birthplace. 100 102

When Naoya Zenin and the Zenin Clan intervene, Hanami charges Naoya to create an escape route for Kana and Mahito. Ranta Zenin immobilizes her, after which Naobito Zenin takes over the battle and steadily forces her into the clan’s encirclement. 103 108

Hanami deploys her pollen technique in an attempted retreat, but Naobito recovers and orders the Zenin forces to capture her alive for interrogation. 108
