For a moment, the atmosphere fell silent, nearly frozen solid.
Even at his most miserable, Kingpin had never, not once, lost friends and partners, had his trusted men taken out, and been attacked at his own doorstep—all within two short days like today.
There was no need to wonder about his subordinates. The dead were dead, and the rest had fled. For the first time in his life, Kingpin thought of calling the police!
He stared at that guy. In the end, he could only rely on himself.
Blood flowing from the wound on his forehead blurred one of his eyes, yet Kingpin didn't even dare wipe it away.
Because his current enemy was unlike any he had faced before.
Stronger, more unscrupulous, more devoid of limits, and utterly unbound by morality or rules.
If he tried to wipe away the blood and that guy suddenly pulled out a gun and fired at him, that wouldn't be surprising at all.
Kingpin believed the other man was absolutely capable of pretending his magazine was empty!
This was the most perfect enemy, one that could only appear in nightmares!
He loosely clenched his left fist. His trembling hand and weak forearm reminded him that the injury to his upper arm was still too severe. It was affecting his combat ability.
The constant bleeding was like a countdown to death. If this dragged on, he would inevitably bleed to death.
And...
Kingpin knew full well that while he gradually weakened from blood loss, that guy definitely wouldn't just wait...
He would make his move himself and kill him in a single strike!
Run?
Leaving aside the issue of mobility, that guy could fly!
Then there was only one answer left.
End this quickly!
Make one last desperate gamble!
There was still a chance to find life in death. If he focused solely on fleeing, death was certain!
"I don't think you'd hand me over to the law, would you?" Kingpin asked, still in that calm tone, as if he were merely stating a fact.
It was unclear whether he was drawing a conclusion about something he already knew, or probing for something.
Leon burst out laughing. "Come on, big guy~ That question was stupid in just the right way. I can't even tell whether you're serious or doing some kind of bit!"
Bang!
He fired the last bullet hidden in the magazine. Kingpin didn't fall for it. One bullet couldn't decide anything.
"If someone like you got to die peacefully, wouldn't that be terribly unfair to people like us?"
"You've killed plenty of people too. Don't think of yourself as so clean," Kingpin shot back.
Yet Leon wore it like a badge of honor. "Don't say that~ I haven't killed that many bad guys~ Plenty of them were only crippled. Lying in a hospital bed, they've got lots of good days waiting for them!"
As he spoke, he clapped his hands and said in delighted surprise, "How about I cripple you too! Put you in a glass jar and keep you alive inside it! Then I'll charge admission. How about I give you five percent!"
Leon's answer was a flying stone.
Leon didn't get angry, maintaining his negotiating tone. "I came here sincerely seeking cooperation! I hope you don't fail to appreciate my kindness! If you break both your own hands right now, I can consider not charging you for the magic show!"
He put away both pistols. With his hands behind his back, Leon said casually, "Only your head is exposed, but I have to cover the cost of the glass jar!"
Kingpin laughed in rage. He grabbed a broken solid-wood table leg from the floor and sneered. "Then I'm terribly sorry, but I have no plans to put you in a jar!"
Leon took two steps back. "Wait a minute! We agreed on bare hands! Why are you bringing in weapons now! Referee! Coach! I object! He violated the rules!"
Whether it was a bluff or merely his usual mad rambling, Kingpin didn't respond. He charged forward with the club in hand.
Whoosh!
The heavy club swept over Leon's head, and the wind pressure nearly blew off his hat.
"Ugh!"
The muffled grunt came from Kingpin.
He staggered backward and looked down. A long gash had appeared across his chest.
Leon held a sword in one hand and shrugged. "You used a weapon first. As a chef, isn't it perfectly reasonable for me to carry a five-foot fish-cutting knife with me?"
There was no longer any need for words. More talk was useless.
Kingpin knew he had little hope of escaping death today.
Then he'd take someone down with him!!
His massive body charged forward again, as though he no longer cared about his life. He swung the table leg left and right, so tightly that not even water could get through, the wind roaring around it!
After a few exchanges, Leon adjusted his hat. He was completely unharmed, while Kingpin had nothing left in his hand but a short wooden stump.
There was no helping it. Leon's Horse-Cleaving Sword had nothing else going for it except being sharp.
He spun the blade in a flourish, and somehow it even looked a little cool.
"My sword is famous for being fast!"
Kingpin still didn't say a word. He grabbed a chair and threw it over. When Leon raised his sword to cut through the chair, Kingpin accelerated and rammed into him. Though Leon's returning blade cut his right hand, the impact sent Leon flying into the wall with a violent crash!
Offense and defense switched places in an instant!
Kingpin clutched his right elbow. Leon had happened to slash directly through the joint, and his right hand was no longer fully under his control.
There was even a good chance he would never be able to use it again.
But it was worth it!
Leon was spread-eagled against the wall, slowly sliding down in a ridiculous manner before finally collapsing onto the floor, unconscious.
Kingpin couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief. I'd gambled right!
Trading an injury for a life was worth it!
"Cough! Cough!! Hah..." The wound in Kingpin's chest was deep, and the intense movement had torn it open again, making him cough violently.
Then he began laughing without end.
He picked up a chair leg with a jagged broken end. Kingpin intended to drive that piece of wood into Leon's heart!
Limping over to Leon's side, Kingpin didn't approach directly. He knew that blow had been enough to knock down a wall, but that guy could withstand bullets.
After standing there for more than twenty seconds, Kingpin finally relaxed.
Trembling, he crouched down and reached out to remove Leon's mask. What he most wanted to know now was what kind of face lay beneath it!
"Surprise! Motherfucker!"
Leon, wearing Joker makeup, first flashed Kingpin a toothy grin, his white teeth gleaming.
As Kingpin scrambled away from him on all fours, Leon yawned, picked up the mask Kingpin had tossed aside, and put it back on.
"I won't play like this next time. And you! How could you take so long to come over? I almost fell asleep!"
I wouldn't fear the darkness if I had never seen the light.
Kingpin now deeply understood the meaning of those words.
"You... you lunatic..."
Leon wasn't pleased. "Nonsense! You're the bald one! This is authentic Joker makeup! Do you know how long I spent putting it on just to give you this surprise!"
That familiar gentlemanly gesture: "You're welcome!"
With both body and soul devastated, Kingpin could no longer muster the courage to rise and resist. His hands went limp, and his seated body collapsed completely to the ground.
"I never thought that in the end, I would actually... urgh..."
With a flick, Leon shook the blood from his blade. He watched Kingpin, whose eyes remained wide with shock, still trying to press both hands over the wound in his throat.
It was futile.
Kingpin's white shirt... was now a red shirt...
After casually wiping the blade, Leon saw that Kingpin was already at death's door. He rubbed his shoulder. He had to admit, Kingpin's charge had really hurt—far more than being shot.
"Let me tell you, there's a saying where I'm from: villains die from talking too much!"
After pausing, he pulled out the sword and stabbed Kingpin twice more. Repeating the wiping process, Leon said regretfully, "If you hadn't babbled those two lines, maybe you really could've lived a little longer."
Watching Kingpin gradually lose his breath and heartbeat, Leon flew away through the window.
The king of the underworld, Kingpin, had fallen before finishing his grand undertaking!
