Hero? You Think You're Worthy?
"Honey, it's time to take your medicine!"
A pure white dress paired with a holy face—beautiful enough to topple kingdoms.
Rosweisse, the saintess of the Holy Church!
She crouched beside Qin Chu's bed, holding a bowl of medicine as black and thick as ink in her small hands.
The injuries inflicted by the Dark Witch Saye Nikolas could not be healed even by the Holy Church's most powerful recovery spells. He had been taking medicine for over a month straight, yet his injuries showed no sign of improvement.
Perhaps he would never recover.
As though she had seen through Qin Chu's thoughts, a blush spread across Rosweisse's pale face. "I'll feed you."
"Our Hero needs to recover soon. This world cannot exist without a Hero!"
Rosweisse brought the medicine to her lips and took a small sip. Under Qin Chu's astonished gaze, she bent down. A sweet fragrance wafted over him as her cherry-red lips pressed against his. Qin Chu felt as though something was pressing down on his chest.
Sip after sip... in a daze, he drank every drop of the medicine. Even the bitter brew seemed unusually sweet.
She was such an innocent and shy girl. Yet in order to make him take his medicine and recover sooner, she had become so bold, doing something she would never normally do.
Qin Chu felt his chest burn. He wanted to take this chance to confess to Rosweisse again.
Even before the war had ended, Qin Chu had held deep affection for Rosweisse. He had once confessed his feelings to her. At the time, Rosweisse had blushed furiously. Her small hand had caressed Qin Chu's cheek before she gently rejected him, saying that the war was still ongoing and it was not the time to discuss such things. They could talk after the world was at peace.
Though he had been rejected, Qin Chu felt certain that Rosweisse liked him too.
Now that the war was over and the world was at peace, she surely would not reject him if he confessed now, right?
But when the words reached his lips, Qin Chu hesitated.
Was he worthy of Rosweisse now? His injuries could not be healed. Even if he somehow survived, he would likely be bedridden for the rest of his life. To Rosweisse, he would only be a burden.
He gave up on confessing. A gentle expression appeared on his face. As long as Rosweisse could live happily, nothing else mattered.
But at that moment, Rosweisse suddenly backed away, widening the distance between herself and Qin Chu. Her once-gentle face twisted with disgust.
Her pale little hand scrubbed fiercely at her lips, while her slender throat kept convulsing as though she might vomit at any moment.
"Fuck, disgusting!"
Her appearance was completely different from the tenderness she had shown before. Was this really the same person?
With a creak, the door was pushed open, and two figures entered.
A member of the Hero's party, the Scarlet Goddess of War Ekaterina, and a short old man.
Their eyes were fixed on Qin Chu.
They had once drunk and laughed together, but now their gazes carried only mockery and arrogance.
Had some force taken control of them? Why were they looking at him like that?
Qin Chu wanted to speak, but discovered that he had been stripped of his ability to talk. Not a single sound could leave his mouth. His body felt as though it were being crushed beneath millions of tons of weight, making it hard to breathe.
"Rosweisse, you've worked hard," Ekaterina said softly, consoling her. Kissing someone she did not love must have been terribly unpleasant.
Rosweisse carefully wiped the corners of her mouth with a handkerchief before tossing it far away. "It's fine. All of this is for Lord Jello."
Jello? The first Hero?
Qin Chu's eyes abruptly widened.
Staring at the shocked man lying on the bed, Rosweisse, looking down on him from above, let out a cold sneer. "You seem surprised? Compared to Lord Jello, you're nothing but a pig. Still, cheer up. At least this pig has some use. Your blood will open the gates for Lord Jello's resurrection."
"Consider it your final contribution to this world."
Did this man still not understand the situation? Or was he simply unable to accept reality?
Surely he did not truly believe that she had fallen in love with him?
Ten years ago, a vast number of Demonic Beasts had suddenly emerged across the Skyvault Continent. Humanity's strength could not withstand them, and corpses covered the land.
The Thirteen Sages summoned the first Hero. What a charming man he had been. Rosweisse had fallen at first sight, irreversibly in love with him.
Countless times, Rosweisse had wanted to offer the purity that should have served the gods to Lord Hero, but he had always told her not to rush. They would marry after the war ended.
Then Lord Jello died.
Qin Chu was the second Hero, while Rosweisse and the others remained members of the Hero's party.
Yet they had never truly accepted Qin Chu. In their hearts, only one person deserved the title of Hero: Jello. They loathed Qin Chu for daring to become a Hero, feeling that even the word itself had been defiled by him.
If the Skyvault Continent had not needed the Hero's power, they would not even have bothered to keep up appearances.
Every minute and second spent at Qin Chu's side had been agonizing. They even had to keep smiles on their faces and create the illusion that they were the best of companions. It was practically torture.
They had wanted more than once to point at Qin Chu's nose and say, "Hero? You think you're worthy?"
Qin Chu had slain the Eternal Sovereign, sealed the Dark Witch, and driven every Demonic Beast into the Abyss. His reputation among humanity had reached its peak. This only made Rosweisse even more furious. The Hero could only be Lord Jello. This man did not deserve it.
Fortunately, Rosweisse knew how to resurrect a Hero. The successor's blood could open the gates to resurrect the Hero. If they had not still needed Qin Chu to fight those Demonic Beasts, she would never have allowed him to live this long.
When Rosweisse contacted the other members of the Hero's party, no one hesitated and no one refused. They would join forces to eliminate the bastard who had shamelessly stolen the glory that belonged to Lord Jello.
Those in power also did not want anyone standing above them. As long as the Hero remained alive, the authority in their hands would remain exceptionally fragile.
The Skyvault Continent had now returned to peace. It no longer needed a Hero.
They had arranged for someone to undo the seal on the Dark Witch Saye Nikolas. They had even fed Saye Nikolas a berserk potion, hoping to use her to eliminate Qin Chu.
But Qin Chu was simply too strong. He sealed Saye Nikolas once again and returned severely wounded.
The medicine Qin Chu drank every day was the most insidious poison. It would slowly corrode Qin Chu's steel-hard muscles and skin, rendering recovery spells completely ineffective.
This pitiful man had never suspected a thing. He still believed that his injuries had all been caused by the Dark Witch.
Now, at last, it was time to reap the harvest.
"Sir Lex, how are your preparations going?" Rosweisse asked coldly.
The short old man stroked the beard on his chin, his face filled with a sinister smile. "Don't worry, Miss Rosweisse."
"I began preparing from the moment the Hero set out to suppress Saye Nikolas. My CBB subordinates are experts at this sort of thing. They're very good at spreading rumors."
"Lord Hero probably has no idea that while he was injured, his reputation had already fallen to rock bottom."
"There will be no problem with publicly trying the Hero."
That was right. They would publicly try him.
They could have simply killed the Hero here, pinned the blame on Saye Nikolas, and claimed that the Hero had succumbed to his grave injuries after fighting her.
But if Qin Chu died that way, he would forever enjoy the highest glory, remembered like a savior.
In their eyes, those honors should have belonged to Lord Jello. They absolutely could not allow this despicable man to steal them.
They would not merely kill Qin Chu. They would make him lose all reputation and leave him infamous for eternity!
"Extra, extra! The Supreme Council has released the latest news: the witch Saye Nikolas was unsealed by Qin Chu himself. After extensive verification, it was discovered that after the Eternal Calamity ended and peace returned, the Hero felt his status declining day by day. To prove his value, he released the witch."
"Ugh, how disgusting. For his own selfish desires, he got fifty thousand people killed. Fifty thousand lives! Doesn't his conscience hurt?"
"I believe Lord Hero would never do something like that..."
"There are pictures and evidence, and you still don't believe it? Are you some paid shill? Count me in—I've been short on money lately."
"Even if pictures can be faked, what about magical recordings? Everyone knows magical recordings can't be forged."
"You'd earn that kind of blood money? Aren't you afraid someone will dig up your ancestors' graves?"
"Without the Hero, all of you would have become Demonic Beast shit long ago."
"Tch, what kind of Hero is he? I was only born a few years too late. If I'd been born in that era, what would some outsider like him have had to do with anything? Besides, were Demonic Beasts really that strong? Demonic Beasts have appeared recently too, and every time, the Guardian Alliance dealt with them easily. Looks like they're nothing special. I could do it too."
"I think this old relic was praised too highly. He always thought he was some kind of savior. He wasn't the only one fighting Demonic Beasts back then, was he? Obviously, now that peace has come and he's no longer as important as before, he can't accept the fall from grace. Wasn't it exposed recently that he beat someone into a vegetable just because they failed to recognize him?"
"He got drunk in a bar, went on a rampage, and beat several people to death in the street..."
"And there's more—** attempted rape, then murdered an entire family... The evidence is conclusive."
"If one person says you're guilty, it might be a false accusation. But if a hundred people say you're guilty, then the problem must be you."
"Fuck, these dogs from another world are all the same. We never should have summoned any Hero in the first place."
Repetition was a kind of power. Repeat a lie a hundred times, and it became the truth.
On one hand, they diminished people's fear of Demonic Beasts, saying they were nothing special and that Heroes were not all that important. On the other hand, they increased publicity for the other members of the Hero's party, dividing up the glory that had originally belonged to the Hero.
With certain vested interests fanning the flames, the Hero's reputation plummeted to rock bottom in a very short time.
When Qin Chu opened his eyes again, he found himself floating on his back in midair.
Two silver-white chains were wrapped around his arms and connected to the sky above. These were the shackles of Heavenly Prison, the Holy Church's strongest restraining spell, capable of completely sealing the magic within his body.
Two earth-yellow chains bound his legs and sank into the ground. Earth Mother's Embrace could seal the battle aura within his body.
A sharp longsword shining with brilliant golden light floated above his neck.
The Sword of Damocles, a divine sword said to be capable of cutting through anything.
And then there was the poison accumulated inside him, which softened his skin and muscles.
Tch. Rosweisse and the others had certainly prepared thoroughly.
The area around the public trial was packed with noisy spectators.
At the top of the judgment building, Qin Chu saw countless familiar figures: his former teammates, the imperial royal family, great nobles, and high-ranking officials from the Earth Mother Church and the Holy Church...
Rosweisse stood at the very front, a flush staining her pale cheeks.
"Qin Chu, you stand accused of intentional murder and are suspected of being responsible for fifty-three thousand, six hundred and thirty-two deaths. The evidence is conclusive. What do you have to say for yourself?" Rosweisse's cold voice rang out from above.
Qin Chu opened his mouth, but no sound came out. The poison had already rendered him mute.
"It seems you have nothing to say. After all, you were once the Hero who saved the Skyvault Continent. As your former teammates, we truly did not wish to do this to you. But your crimes are too numerous to record and your evil beyond measure. If we do not kill you, the public's anger cannot be appeased!"
"Kill him..."
"Kill him..."
"Kill him..."
The surrounding spectators all roared at the top of their lungs, their faces flushed and their eyes bulging with fury.
The voices merged into a tsunami of sound, shaking the entire execution ground.
Their twisted faces brimmed with excitement. Under the lingering light of the setting sun, every face was covered in a crimson sheen.
Perhaps there were some clever people among humanity who could see how much of an eyesore the Hero was to those vested interests, who could see how filthy the so-called evidence was.
They might not truly believe that the Hero deserved to die.
But what could be more thrilling than watching someone who had once stood beyond reach fall to the very bottom before their eyes? Nothing, probably.
The world was at peace now. The Demonic Beasts had been driven into the Abyss. The Skyvault Continent no longer needed a Hero. There was no need to offend those who held real power for the sake of someone unimportant.
Looking at those twisted faces and listening to the tide-like cries, Qin Chu was confused. Were these truly the people he had once fought through blood and fire to protect?
Some faces even seemed familiar. They were the people he had personally saved from the claws of Demonic Beasts, weren't they?
What had happened to make them so ugly?
Rotten eggs, spoiled vegetables, and leftover food filled the sky.
Rosweisse grew even more delighted. This was exactly what she wanted—to see the Hero disgraced and cursed for eternity.
"Execute him!"
At the command, the four chains tightened at once, and the Sword of Damocles in the sky fell at the same moment.
