Late at night, on the outskirts of the Tokyo Metropolitan Area.
Lin Yi sped down the highway on the "Hard-Boiled" motorcycle, carrying the girl behind him.
Following the directions of the girl behind him, Yuko Takagi, Lin Yi was heading for Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College on the outskirts of Tokyo.
From Yuko Takagi's intermittent explanations along the way, combined with what he knew of the plot, Lin Yi had pieced together the general situation.
The main storyline of Jujutsu Kaisen he knew had undergone some slight changes. Because Yuko Takagi, the girl behind him, had been rescued from what seemed to be Kenjaku's experiment by Jujutsu High, she had not reached the stage of swallowing a cursed object containing the soul of an ancient sorcerer and falling into slumber. Instead, through a twist of fate, she had become a sorcerer with no Innate Cursed Technique and transferred into the first year of Jujutsu High alongside Yuta Okkotsu, becoming classmates with Maki Zenin and the others.
That had also led Satoru Gojo to make arrangements different from the movie, so the two transfer students could better understand how to use their cursed energy.
According to the original timeline, Yuko Takagi did not exist. Gojo had had time to serve as their accompanying teacher, assigning Yuta Okkotsu and Maki Zenin a mission to exorcise a Cursed Spirit while observing and guiding Yuta Okkotsu in how to use his cursed energy and technique.
But with Yuko Takagi now in the picture, Kenjaku had spared no expense, mobilizing resources he had accumulated over a thousand years to retrieve his creation—a vessel made for cursed objects housing ancient sorcerers' souls. He wanted to draw Gojo and everyone connected to Jujutsu High away from the students so he could take Yuko Takagi, the test subject.
That was how this situation had come about.
Maki Zenin and the others had brought Yuta Okkotsu and Yuko Takagi into the metropolitan area to show them how sorcerers exorcised Cursed Spirits. Instead, they had fallen into a barrier set by Kenjaku, trapping Maki Zenin, Toge Inumaki, Panda, and Yuta Okkotsu inside while allowing Yuko Takagi alone to escape.
Then he had sent his curse users to retrieve Yuko Takagi.
But Lin Yi did not understand. Why had Kenjaku previously sent one of his curse users to disguise herself as Yuko Takagi's sister and hire him to find her? Wasn't that redundant? Wait, am I also one of Kenjaku's targets for planting cursed objects containing ancient sorcerers' souls?
Only then did Lin Yi slam on the brakes. The tires carved a streak across the road as the motorcycle slowly came to a stop.
"Detective, why did we stop?"
"Listen, I don't know where Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College is either, but why don't we just call someone first?"
"Well... other than Teacher Gojo and Mr. Nanami, I only know Mr. Kiyotaka Ijichi. But... I can't reach him."
Fine. Lin Yi had not expected Kenjaku to block off that route too. So tonight's setup had not been prepared just for this unlucky girl—it had been prepared for him as well. Damn it, I still couldn't avoid the dirty trick of that thousand-year-old prankster Kenjaku.
Lin Yi cursed under his breath.
Then he comforted her. "No need to contact anyone. My instincts are telling me the road ahead is closed."
He had stopped not only because he realized Kenjaku might have set him up, but because the heightened intuition he possessed in his transformed state was warning him. An unsettling surge of cursed energy was churning inside the tunnel ahead, the only route leading to Tokyo Jujutsu High.
If they kept going, they would really crash straight into Kenjaku's trap.
Fortunately, he was not completely unprepared.
"What do we do now, Detective?" Yuko Takagi panicked.
"Don't worry. Let me confirm something first. You know the exact location of your school, right?"
Yuko Takagi nodded vigorously.
"Then this is easy. Give me your phone."
Yuko Takagi handed over her phone without understanding why. Lin Yi opened Gaode Maps on it and had her enter the landmark for Tokyo Jujutsu High. Then, holding the phone, he adjusted his direction several times. Soon, a narrow path different from the main road appeared on the navigation route.
"Yuko Takagi, you need to run to your school by yourself now. Use the navigation on your phone."
"Huh? M-Me?"
"That's right. I don't know what happened to you, but my instincts say that if we keep driving forward, neither of us will get away. So I'll stay behind as bait while you go get help. Our roles are very clear."
Yuko Takagi wanted to suggest that they switch, since Lin Yi could drive, but before she could say it, he pointed at the tunnel visible around the bend ahead, then at himself, and finally at Yuko Takagi. His meaning was obvious.
Watching Lin Yi, whose sixth sense was merely sharper than an ordinary person's, resolutely choose to stay behind as bait and buy time for her, Yuko Takagi felt deeply moved.
"Detective, why are you helping me so much?"
"First, I promised my little brother Aoi Todo. Second, Miss Takagi, you were once my client. Even though Mr. Kento Nanami took over midway, the reputation of Shinjuku Ward Kabukicho's number one City Hunter cannot collapse. My future business depends on it. So, Miss Takagi, run. I'll stall for as long as I can."
Lin Yi explained helplessly. It was no longer a matter of whether he wanted to stay out of it. That thousand-year-old prankster Kenjaku had already set his sights on him. Since he had been targeted, he had to strike back somehow.
Yuko Takagi no longer hesitated. Or perhaps, anyone chosen by that thousand-year-old prankster Kenjaku as an experiment had to be at least a little unhinged, much like sorcerers themselves.
After circulating the cursed energy within her body, Yuko Takagi easily vaulted over the guardrail. As she descended the mountain path, she looked back at Lin Yi once, as if committing his appearance to memory, before breaking into a rapid sprint.
This little girl doesn't actually think I'm trading my life for hers, does she? She really is pretty. Wonder which lucky bastard will end up with her someday. Forget it, time to work. Hopefully, they're already on their way.
Lin Yi watched the girl whose life path he had changed disappear into the distance, muttered to himself for a while, then pulled out his phone.
The phone had remained connected the entire time, and the person on the other end was Suguru Geto, whose side Lin Yi had just joined.
After putting the phone back into his pocket, Lin Yi climbed back onto the motorcycle and started the engine.
He really wanted to see what level of curse user Kenjaku had sent to do the job.
The motorcycle roared once more, carrying Lin Yi forward as he accelerated around the bend. The tunnel leading to Tokyo Jujutsu High was right before him, and Lin Yi spotted a burly man in a black leather jacket and sunglasses standing beside it.
Seeing that, Lin Yi twisted the throttle harder and switched on his high beams, catching the other man completely off guard.
Kenjaku, huh? Curse user, huh? You still wouldn't let me go? Eat my Knight Motorcycle Impact!
