Background

Lu Xuan regained memories of a previous life after the former owner of his body died following a failed Qi-Refining Grand Rite. The body had spent nine years in the Heaven-Gazing Sect, including three years studying ancient scripts and cultivating to the perfected Embryonic Breath Realm. Lu Xuan discovered an unexplained Jade Disc bearing the Ancient Huangjie character [Diligence], which he believes may be connected to his arrival in this world. 1 5

After failing his first Qi-Refining Grand Rite, Lu Xuan was given one final attempt before losing his status as a Hibernation Academy disciple. Unable to obtain the sect-controlled Four-Aspect Divination Herb through ordinary means, he wagered his mortal body to Scarlet Flame Madam in exchange for it, promising Cold Crystal Lunar Essence as repayment if he succeeded. 2 4

His second Grand Rite succeeded. He gathered Dawn Radiance True Qi, entered the inner sect, chose the Sea-Calming Bureau despite its dangerous East Sea duties, and began training on Cangyun Island. 6 8 10

Appearance

Lu Xuan is repeatedly noted for an exceptional, almost otherworldly appearance. Before entering Qi Refining, he was already considered the most handsome disciple of Hibernation Academy; afterward, his aura became markedly less mortal and more like that of an immortal cultivator. 7 30

Lu Xuan is resolute, pragmatic, and willing to endure humiliation or danger for advancement. After failing his first Grand Rite, he immediately sought the means for a second attempt rather than accepting expulsion from Hibernation Academy. He later chose the Sea-Calming Bureau for its opportunities despite its lethal duties in the East Sea. 2 9

He refuses to make promises he cannot honestly fulfill. When Senior Brother Lin demanded an oath to destroy the Azure Wood Sect should Lu Xuan ever reach Golden Core, Lu Xuan declined while offering help within his present ability. 26

Although decisive and often ruthless in battle, Lu Xuan is not needlessly cruel. He accepted the black-robed bandit cultivator Xiao Heming’s submission rather than killing him, then tested whether the man could be reformed and trusted with Golden Bamboo Island’s affairs. 84 95 101
